- 1. Introduction
-
- WWIVsys is a shareware utility designed to aid sysops running WWIV 4.2x.
- Created in the fall of 1994, the idea was to make a utility for configuring
- WWIV that was easy to use and that combined all the major sysop functions into
- one program, so that software would be an union of the WWIV's INIT.EXE software
- and all internal WWIV's Sysop functions and more.
-
- This documentation was written with the experienced WWIV sysop in mind. It has
- been divided by each topic on the Main Menu and gives a general description of
- each function. Some of the items in the various functions are
- self-explanatory and may not have detailed descriptions.
-
- With that, we in the WWIVsys development group wish you the best of luck, but
- remind you that even with all our hard work and testing, there MAY still be
- bugs in this program. You should also know that we are not responsible for
- any damage this program causes, directly or indirectly.
-
-
- 2. Credits
-
- WWIVsys was created by Martin Bourdages and Nicolas LeBlanc. This
- documentation has been written by Christopher Gauthier and Nicolas LeBlanc.

-
- - WWIVsys is compiled with Borland C++ v4.5
- - WWIVsys has been tested with WWIV v4.23 and v4.24
- - WWIVsys v1.5 or higher will support multi-instances systems
- - WWIVsys works well with multi-tasker
-
-
- Hardware Requirements
-
- - An IBM PC, AT, ix86, PS/2 or 100% IBM BIOS compatible PC
- - A hard disk with at least 300k of disk space available
- - A color monitor (RGB or VGA) (not required, but recommanded)
-
- Software requirements
-
- - Microsoft or IBM PC DOS v3.0 or above
- - WWIV BBS v4.23 or above.
-
-
- Installation and Setup
-
- To install WWIVsys, either from the original floppy disk or from the
- archive format, you simply need to run INSTALL.EXE and the WWIVsys installation
- software will do the rest for you. You will be prompted for questions to
- setup the application correctly, and then WWIVsys will be installed directly
- into your main WWIV directory.
-
- NOTE: If you are setting up a WWIV BBS for the first time and have not run the
- INIT.EXE that comes with WWIV, then you need to do so before running WWIVsys.
- It creates the necessary files for WWIVsys to run as well as the rest of the
- BBS.
-
- After the installation, go to your main WWIV directory and load SYS.EXE, the
- next step is generally to scroll down up to the "WWIVsys Configuration" item
- in the main menu, so you can customize WWIVsys for your own needs.
-
- If you have problems in the installation, what you need to do is to email
- the authors at the available network addresses found in this documentation,
- this is the best way to help us fix the problem. Generally, the problems are
- related to the WWIVsys registration process, so you don't have to worry about
- that if you're not registered.
-
- If you are running OS/2 (version 2.10 or greater), installation is the same as
- in DOS. Just open a DOS session and change to the BBS's main directory. It
- is not recommended to run WWIVsys while the BBS is running. Some recommended
- settings for the DOS session include loading DOS high, and into the UMB areas.
- Audio Adapter Sharing is NOT required, and WWIVsys does not need access to any
- com ports. Files should be set to 40 or higher as a general rule of thumb for
- all sessions, and buffers can also be 40 for most sessions of DOS.
- Idle_Sensitivty and Idle_Time are settings that should be tailored to your
- individual system needs. Under OS/2 Warp v3.0, a new Session_Priority setting
- was introduced. This will vary depending on your system, but a good starting
- place would be a priority of 1. Set the work directory for the WWIVsys object
- (if creating an object for it) to the main BBS directory.
-
- Now that your WWIVsys copy is installed, we invite you to look at the files
- contained in the package, here is a small explanation of what those files are:
-
- FILE_ID.DIZ .. The description file of WWIVsys
- FMD.ICO .. Icon for MS-Windows
- FMD-40A.MOD .. WWIV source code modification to run WWIVsys inside WWIV
- INSTALL.EXE .. Installation Software
- PRODUCTS.FMD .. Infoform about other products from FMD Software
- README.TXT .. File to read after installation is done
- REGISTER.FRM .. Registration form for WWIVsys
- SYS.EX_ .. Archived main software module
- SYS.HL_ .. Help file for WWIVsys
- SYS.ICO .. Icon for MS-Windows
- SYS.TI_ .. Tips file for WWIVsys
- SYS00.XEI .. Graphic file for the Installation Software
- SYS01.XEI .. Graphic file for the Installation Software
- SYSV.EXE .. VGA Demonstrator of the Installation Software
- WHATS.NEW .. History of WWIVsys from step to step
- WWIVSYS.DA_ .. Automatic Installers data file
- WWIVSYS.DOC .. WWIVsys Documentation (You are reading it)
- WWIVSYS.H .. Header file for FMD-40a.MOD
- WWIVSYS.PIF .. PIF file to run WWIVsys under Windows v3.1x
- WWIVSYS.Q&A .. Question & Answers File, included also in this doc
- WWIVSYS.UPD .. WWIVsys Documentation Update
-
- If you run WWIV 4.23, it is not possible (at this time) to run WWIVsys in any of
- the shells to DOS, except via the //DOS command. This is an inherent
- limitation if WWIV 4.23. WWIV 4.24 has better memory management routines that
- allow you to run WWIVsys in any shell to DOS.
-
- With the release of v1.5, WWIVsys will have multi-instance support. This means
- that you should be able to load WWIVsys when you have another node running.
- Of course, this may cause some problems since WWIV doesn't not offer an instant
- refresh to memory of the datas, but we are confident that this will be done
- in the WWIV package in a near future. You are able to load WWIVsys, but you
- need to restart your instances in order for the changes to take effects.
-
- One method to run WWIVsys is as a chain from the BBS, and that will work.
- Make sure that you have the BBS shrink out before running WWIVsys. Note that
- WWIVsys will not be viewable remotely unless you are running Doorway first,
- we may include a remote shell in the future, but due to the complexity of
- this step, this is on hold.
-
- Now that you have explored all the files from your WWIVsys package, you can
- see that you actually need the files SYS.EXE, SYS.HLP, SYS.TIP and WWIVSYS.DAT
- only to have the software running, the other files are there only for your
- personnal use, if you don't use them, you can delete them. The WWIVsys
- configuration is saved in the WWIV.INI file, which is the configuration file
- for WWIV v4.24 and higher. If you are running v4.23 or less, you may not have
- this file, WWIVsys will create it for you.
-
- 4. Functions
-
-
- ON-LINE HELP
-
- Everywhere inside WWIVsys, you can hit the F1 key to get immediate help. This
- quick help will show you the available commands where you are in the screen.
- If help doesn't show up, make sure the file SYS.HLP is in the same directory
- as WWIVsys. It is very important that you press F1 in each screens when you
- are running WWIVsys for the first times, because this software has many
- imbedded functions that you might not be aware, and the F1 key is the one
- that will show all commands available. The help file changes constantly when
- moving from fields to fields.
-
-
- GLOBAL COMMANDS
-
- Wherever you are in the softare, there are some commands that will always be
- the same. Here is a list of the commands available everywhere in the program:
-
- ESC - Back To Previous Menu
- SHIFT-F10/ALT-J/ALT-S - Drop To DOS
- F1 - On-Line Help
- Arrow Keys - Move across the screen
-
-
- MAIN MENU
-
- The main menu is the place where you select which of the 30 editors and
- functions of WWIVsys you wish to use. Be aware that this menu in normal 80x25
- video mode is a scrolling menu, there are functions hidden until you move
- down. You can get to the first command starting with that letter.
-
-
- LIST CENTERS
-
- WWIVsys has some global areas. One of them is the list center that is almost
- the same each time you get into one. The commands available in the list
- centers are:
-
- Return - Edit Selected Field
- F3 - Search
- F10 - Print List
- INSERT - Add a new field
- DELETE - Delete Selected Field
- SPACE - Tag & Move Selected Field
- HOME/END - Beginning/End of List
- CTRL-PAGE UP/DOWN - Beginning/End of List
- UP/DOWN - Move Up/Down 1 field
- PAGE UP/DOWN - Move Up/Down 1 Page
- TAB - Move Down
-
- There are some special commands in some of the list centers, they will be
- described later in this documentation.
-
- Searching Fields
-
- The search command is a simple process. Once you hit the F3 key, you are
- prompted to enter the key to search, then press Return and you will get back
- to the listing. To start the search, you must press the following keys:
-
- CTRL-UP_ARROW or "[" To Search Up
- CTRL-DOWN_ARROW or "]" To Search Down
-
- This should bring you to the field you wish to find in the list. If you have
- problems to start the search commands, see the TROUBLESHOOTING section.
-
- Moving Fields
-
- To move a field, you simply need to press the SPACEBAR over the item you wish
- to move, and then press the SPACEBAR again where you wish it to be. Notice
- that if you want it at the end of the list, you need to tag the END OF FILE
- marker. If there is any problem, WWIVsys should warn you.
-
- Note: Moving some data may require a lot of work to convert your WWIV data
- files, so don't worry if in some cases it seems to be long, WWIVsys is
- converting everything for your convenience.
-
-
- EDIT FIELDS
-
- Available Commands In Editing Fields:
-
- CTRL-L - Insert a WWIV color code
- CTRL-X - Delete Complete Field
- CTRL-W - Delete Last Word
- LEFT/RIGHT - Move In Field
- INSERT/DELETE - Overwrite ON/OFF
- HOME/END - Beginning/End of Field
-
- Some Fields are scrollable, this means that they are longer than what you see
- on the screen. In that case, you will see the first letters dissapear when you
- will be at the end of the screen, and you should see yellow arrows telling you
- where you can go.
-
- 4.1 Activity Log
-
- The Activity Log graphically shows usage and statistics of your system for the
- past days. Use the arrow keys to move up/down among the days. This is a
- graphical version of the //ZLOG command in WWIV.
-
-
- Note: If you are running more than one instance (node), the activity
- percentage is unreal since it can be higher than 100%. Since WWIVsys can't
- detect if you are running those instances or not, it is currently limited to
- 100% of activity.
-
- 4.2 Auto-Validation Keys
-
-
- Set these for desired user-configurations and press that Alt-Fn combination to
- select it. Arrow keys also work to move between the configurations. Once you
- have edited those keys, it can be used at two places inside WWIV. When a user
- is on-line, you can validate him by pressing the key itself, or if you are in
- the user editor (stock WWIV), by pressing the number of the key (so F9 would
- be " 9 ").
-
- 4.3 Backup Data Files
-
- This function helps you to safely keep a backup of your WWIV data files. The
- configuration is very easy to use, you simply follow the instructions. This
- function requires PKZIP.EXE to be in the current directory or in your path
- directories in order to work, WWIVsys offers a shell for the Pkware Backup
- which is the better one you can find in matter of data compression.
-
- Backup Error Codes
-
- PKZIP will return the following error codes if the backup isn't sucessful:
-
- 0 No error.
- 1 Bad file name or file specification.
- 2,3 Error in .ZIP file.
- 4-11 Insufficient Memory.
- 12 No files were found to add to the .ZIP file, or no files were specified for deletion.
- 13 File not found. The specified .ZIP file or list file was not found.
- 14 Disk full.
- 15 .ZIP file is read-only and can not be modified.
- 16 Bad or illegal parameters specified. (help screen displayed)
- 17 Too many files.
- 18 Could not open file.
- 255 User pressed control-c or control-break
-
- To restore your data, simply use the usual PKUNZIP software from Pkware.
- There should be a restore function in the future versions of WWIVsys.
-
- 4.4 BBS Information
-
- This is the same information as found in the WWIV INIT.EXE program, menu
- choice #1. Here is the System name, Sysop name, System password, Newuser
- setup, and a few other toggles.
-
- Note: In the current version, when you edit the maximum amount of subboards
- and directories, WWIVsys won't reformat the Qscan file, we suggest that you
- run the FIX utility if you change them directly in WWIVsys once you do it, we
- strongly recommand that you edit this field in the INIT software until the
- feature is working properly.
-
-
- 4.5 Callout.net Manager
-
- This will allow you to edit your callout.net file for each network. Highlite
- the network to edit the callout.net and then toggle the functions on and off
- with the <SPACE BAR> as necessary. Also, the various fields may be edited.
- You can also insert a node from the network lists if needed.
-
-
- 4.6 Cleanup Data Files
-
- This section will see what files are not needed by WWIV any more and delete
- unnecessary files, freeing disk space for the BBS. It will scan your WWIV data
- directory and detect files that you don't use (WWIV data files only) and
- delete them. If you need to stop it, press the <SPACE BAR> at any time.
-
- 4.7 Dir Conference Editor
-
- This function will edit your directory conferences.
-
- This list selector has imbedded commands in it, so here's a list of the
- available commands:
-
- F2 - Conference Manager
-
- The conference manager has these available functions:
-
- RETURN - Edit current directory (Same than the directory editor)
- INSERT - Add a directory in the current conference
- DELETE - Delete a directory in the current conference
- F2 - Remove All Directories From The Conference
- F3 - Add All Directories In Current Conference
- F4 - Sort Current Conference By Numerical Order of the Directories
-
- 4.8 Dir Editor
-
- This is the editor for the Download Directories. Deleting a directory will
- delete the current directory from WWIV, but *NOT* the files in that directory.
-
-
- 4.9 Door Editor
-
- This is also known as the Chain Editor, and allows you to edit your online
- programs in the chain areas.
-
-
- 4.10 External Editors
-
- This is where you can modify your Full-Screen Editor configuration.
-
- This list center has a special command imbedded in it:
-
- F9 - AUTOMATIC INSTALLER
-
- By pressing F9 you can add to your system pre-selected items. To do so, be
- sure that the file WWIVSYS.DAT is in your WWIVsys directory.
-
-
- 4.11 External Programs
-
- This section is the same as WWIV INIT.EXE's menu choice #6, and has the
- external programs/events to be run. This command uses the same basic commands
- as desribed in the beginning of this Chapter, except that the <Space Bar>
- toggles between the various archive formats at the bottom.
-
- You have an imbedded command in the archiver editor:
-
- F9 - AUTOMATIC INSTALLER
-
- Press F9 while on the archiver extension field and you can add pre-selected
- archivers. To do so, be sure that the file WWIVSYS.DAT is in your WWIVsys
- directory.
-
-
- 4.12 File Editor
-
- Here is where you can edit attributes to the files on your BBS, like who
- uploaded, when, who "owns" the file, and where it is located (what directory).
- First, you must select the Directory the file is in, and then you need to
- select the file. <Return> at both places accomplishes this. The other
- standard commands also apply.
-
- The directory list center is the as the directory editor, except that when you
- press RETURN, instead of editing the current directory, you will get in
- another list center, which is the current file listing of the current
- directory. The commands available in that list center are:
-
- F2 - Move A File To Another Directory
- F3 - Import Description From FILE_ID.DIZ
- F4 - Sort Files by Alphabetical Order
- F5 - Sort Files by Date Uploaded
- F6 - Export Current File Description to FILE_ID.DIZ
- F7 - Properize File Description
- F8 - Add GIF Resolution To File Description
- F9 - Update File Size To Dos Size
- F10 - Print List of Files
- F11 - Convert "Uploaded By"
- F12 - Add Comment To Archive
-
- The current description editor, unique to WWIVsys, lets you edit the normal
- description as wellas the extended description all together. You can edit up
- to 10 lines of extended description, 11 in total.
-
-
- 4.13 Gfiles Editor
-
- Lets you add/remove gfiles to the Gfiles area you select. This is NOT the
- same as the //GE command as in WWIV. That is the next function down. Moving
- gfiles is not supported at this time since WWIV sorts them by alphabetical
- order automatically. This function supports insertion and deletion of GFILES
- too.
-
-
- 4.14 Gfiles Section Editor
-
- Lets you add or remove Gfile sections, like in WWIV's //GE function.
-
- 4.15 Instance Editor
-
- Edit the com port setup for each instance here. Use the left and right arrow
- keys to move up/down among the instances. This option won't let you add
- instances for security reasons, even if it would be easily possible. This is
- an agreement with WWIV Software Services; read UPGRADE.TXT in your WWIV
- archive to learn about having more instances. This version will let you edit
- the pre-installed instance only.
-
-
- 4.16 Language Support
-
- Languages can be inserted and edited here. To insert a language, place the
- selection bar where it is to be inserted and press the <INSERT> key. Then it
- will ask for the name and path of this language.
-
-
- 4.17 Modem Init
-
- This allows you to edit the MODEMS.DAT file or the MODEMS.002 (the MODEMS.DAT
- file for instance 2) for your configuration. Note: { will send a <CR> after
- the string and is required. ~ will insert a "-second pause between commands.
-
-
- 4.18 Network Information
-
- This command is the same as the INIT.EXE's 'N'etworks command. Here you are
- allowed to edit the node #, the network name, and it's directory. The moving
- process here is very slow since WWIVsys will process ALL messages/emails and
- users on the system to convert them to the new listing. Linker users must be
- aware that they will need to change their LINKNETS.NET file manually.
-
-
- 4.19 Paths Editor
-
- Edit the paths for the BBS here. Be aware that the TEMP and the BATCH
- directories are only edited for instance 1! To edit those for each instance,
- use the Instance Editor function. Like in each path editor of WWIVsys, adding
- or not a backslash at the end won't change anything since WWIVsys will add it
- automatically for you.
-
- 4.20 Protocols Editor
-
- This is the full protocol editor, allowing you to edit internal and/or
- external protocols. You can move external protocols only in that list center.
- The brown color means that the protocol is internal. Editing internal
- protocols allows you to use an external software instead of stock protocols.
-
- This list center has an imbedded command:
-
- F9 - AUTOMATIC INSTALLER
-
-
- By pressing F9 you will be able to add pre-selected protocols in your system.
- To do that, you must be sure that the file WWIVSYS.DAT in your current WWIVsys
- directory.
-
- 4.21 QWK Configuration
-
- This function allows you to configure your offline mail QWK settings the
- easiest way possible. Simply move from field to field and follow the
- instructions.
-
-
- 4.22 Security Level
-
- Set up your configurations for each security level here. Each level is
- independent of the other. Many sysops use a simple 2-tier system they only
- have validated and unvalidated users. Note that your new users will have be
- assigned the SL that is set in the BBS Informations, and that you should make
- sure that SL is configured to your needs or desires.
-
-
- 4.23 SSM Manager
-
- From this screen, you can edit or delete current SSM's in the file, or you can
- add an SSM to be sent. <Insert> sends an SSM, while <Delete> deletes it.
- <Return> edits the SSM.
-
- Notice: Deleting an SSM won't delete it for real, it will simply replace it by
- an empty field which will be used later.
-
- 4.24 Statistics
-
- This screen shows the various statistics for your machine, like who are the
- best uploaders and downloaders, and many other interesting types of
- information.
-
-
- 4.25 String Editor
-
- Please see Chapter 5 for use of the String Editor.
-
- 4.26 Sub Conference Editor
-
-
- This function will edit your subboards conferences.
-
- This list selector has imbedded commands in it, so here's a list of the
- available commands:
-
- F2 - Conference Manager
-
- The conference manager has these available functions:
-
- RETURN - Edit current subboard (Same than the subs editor)
- INSERT - Add a subboard in the current conference
- DELETE - Delete a subboard in the current conference
- F2 - Remove All Subboards From The Conference
- F3 - Add All Subboards In Current Conference
- F4 - Sort Current Conference By Numerical Order of the Subboards
-
-
-
- 4.27 Sub Editor
-
- This is the editor for the message bases (subs). WWIVsys will handle
- networked informations if you add or delete networked subs too, just don't
- worry about it.
-
- This list center has an imbedded command:
-
- F2 - NETWORK INFORMATION EDITOR
-
- By pressing F2 over a sub, you will access this function, which is the same as
- the " J " command in WWIV's stock sub editor. If your sub is networked, you
- can edit the current network data, otherwise you can put this sub networked
- with the INSERT key. The commands in that list center are the same as the
- other one, except if you are HOSTING the sub, pressing F2 will lead you to
- another function which is the SUBSCRIBERS EDITOR which will be described
- later.
-
- The network info editor is very simple, and compared to stock WWIV, this is a
- very good improvement. In fact, you can EDIT fields, which are not allowed in
- WWIV. Informations are clear enough inside this editor so we won't need to
- elaborate on them. Note that WWIVsys will scan the SUBS.* files to give you
- the informations about the sub if they are available, and that you can modify
- the category only if you have a file called CATEG.NET in your current network
- directory (which should be distributed by the network coordinator)
-
- F2 - SUBSCRIBERS EDITOR
-
- If you are hosting a sub, pressing F2 while in the network info editor of that
- sub will put you in the subscribers editor of that sub for the current
- network. You can add and delete subscribers like all other list centers.
-
- 4.28 Sub List Selector
-
- Use this to view and subscribe to subs from your SUBS.LST file for each
- network. If a sub is auto-requestable, WWIVsys will generate the appropriate
- request and automatically send it to the sub host. WWIVsys should warn you if
- you are reaching the limit you set as " max subs " on your system. This
- feature is unique to WWIVsys.
-
- 4.29 User Editor
-
- Highlight the user you wish to edit, and then press <RETURN>. The user's
- status and informations are displayed and you can edit them by entering the
- new data. Use the arrow keys to move up and down.
-
- Available Commands are:
-

- 4.31 WWIV.INI Flags Editor
-
-
- This will allow you to edit the YES/NO fields from INIT.EXE, if you are
- running v4.24 or later, it will put them in WWIV.INI, if you are running an
- earlier version, it will modify your CONFIG.DAT file. (In fact, it's doing
- both of them, but WWIV.INI overrides CONFIG.DAT in v4.24 and later..)
-
- Beginning in WWIV 4.24, WWIV will use WWIV.INI to toggle on and off many
- functions and options in WWIV. Use this editor to toggle those options on and
- off.
-
-
- 4.32 WWIV.INI Editor
-
- Use the arrow keys to highlight the WWIV.INI option to edit, and press
- <RETURN>. The options are explained in the WWIV 4.24 documentation. <SPACE
- BAR> while editing an option will toggle that "switch" on or off.
-

- SERIAL_NUMBER = 555-33323
-
- WWIVsys Config will allow you to set various options for yourself like

-
- Question & Answers
-
-
- Q. The search keys (Alt-Up/Alt-Down) don't work, what's the problem?
-
- A. You're probably using the ZANSI driver. Replace it by ANSI.SYS and use
- PKSFANSI to protect against ANSI bombs. Since this seems to be a problem
- available on many systems, we added the "[" and "]" keys in most of the
- search functions, except the string editor.
-
- Q. Sometimes WWIVsys loads very fast, sometimes it's slower. Why?
-
- A. WWIVsys will load faster if you have a small WWIV.INI file. Take a look
- inside the file and delete the lines not needed and it should increase the
- loading speed.
-
- Q. My WWIVsys registration code doesn't seems to work. Why?
-
- A. You might have changed something in your configuration that altered the
- registration codes checking routine. The best way to fix that is trying
- to find what is changed in your WWIV configuration that is in the
- registration sheet that you sent us, or email a new form to us and we'll
- find the problem.
-
- Q. What is happening when I'm having a "Please Wait" message?
-
- A. Sometimes WWIVsys needs to reformat your data files to fit with your new
- configuration, so it might take a while.
