  23. -----------

  25. S3 Speed Up is a TSR program, which can speed up most banked VESA
  26. modes (no text or 4 bits/pixel modes) and VGA mode 13h (320x200x256)
  27. on S3 graphics cards.
  28.  
  29. S3 Speed Up requires S3 VBE/Core 2.0 (version 3.10 or higher).

  32. 2. Installation
  33. ---------------

  35. You must install S3 VBE/Core 2.0 (version 3.10 or higher) in memory
  36. before installing S3 Speed Up.
  37.  
  38. Simply type "S3SPDUP /LOAD" to install S3 Speed Up in memory.
  39.  
  40. Type "S3SPDUP VESA+" to install S3 Speed Up in memory and activate
  41. banked VESA modes speed up.
  42.  
  43. For savety reasons S3 Speed Up is disabled at Windows(tm) start up and
  44. shut down.  If you want to use S3 Speed Up under Windows(tm), you must
  45. activate S3 Speed Up in each DOS box.

  47. "S3SPDUP /?" shows a help screen.

  50. 3. Speed up
  51. -----------

  53. S3 Speed Up can speed up most banked VESA modes (no text or
  54. 4 bits/pixel modes) and VGA mode 13h (320x200x256).
  55.  
  56. To speed up these modes S3 Speed Up must temporary change the
  57. PCI base address, which may cause problems!
  58.  
  59. E.g. programs using the S3d(tm) engine (native S3 ViRGE programs)
  60. may or may not run, if banked VESA modes speed up is enabled.
  61.  
  62. The speed up of VGA mode 13h is not 'Mode X' compatible.  This means
  63. that some programs (e.g. DOOM) will not work when the VGA mode 13h
  64. speed up is enabled.

  66. Only use VGA mode 13h speed up, if you are familiar with 'Mode X'!
  67.  
  68. Programs using VESA VBE/Core 2.0 linear frame buffer modes
  69. (e.g. QUAKE) will not profit from banked VESA modes speed up.
