  15. With the popularity of the Internet, more and more BBS's are
  16. moving to that medium for access.  The USBBS list will begin
  17. requesting addresses as soon as I am able to make the changes
  18. at the update points.  In order to make these changes, the
  19. list will have to go to a multi-line format for display.
  20. The following is a proposed format:
  21.  
  22. xxx-xxx-xxxx {current line as is}
  23.              FOCUS : {description}
  24.              URL   : {URL for Web page}
  25.              E-MAIL: {sysop's e-mail address}
  26.              TELNET: {telnet address}
  27.  
  28. These elements will only be included if the board supports them.
  29. Hopefully, this will not make the size of the list too big!
  30.  
  31. As a sidelight, while doing this, I will be moving the list
  32. to an Access database.  Since it's inception, it has been maintained
  33. with a text editor.
  34.  
  35. I hope to have these changes in by the end of the year (January 1997).
  36. Yes, I know I said I would like to have them in by September, 1996,
  37. but my PAYING jobs have taken precidence over this free hobby!

  39. I will implement the addition of Internet information as quickly as
  40. possible and will make the background database changes more slowly.

  46. SysopNews has been forced to cut back on pages and, thus, content.
  47. (I assume that advertising space is NEVER reduced!) The USBBS list
  48. is one of the things which is no longer included.

  95. One of the major problems I have with the list is finding out when
  96. boards go out of existence.  They do this quite often and without
  97. notice.

  101.         | your BBS entry once every 180 DAYS to       |
  102.         | remain on the USBBS List.                   |

  105. Boards on the list as of JANUARY 1, 1996, will be "grandfathered" and
  106. will not be removed until JANUARY 1, 1997.  This will give time for
  107. the word to spread.

  149. BOBsBBS (916-929-7511) is still the best way for updates or to
  150. reach the USBBS.

  154. BOBsBBS supports a set of special ID's which are for downloading
  155. the USBBS list ONLY.  Here they are:
  156.

  159. USBBS YMODEM        Ymodem
  160. USBBS XMODEM        Xmodem-Checksum
  161. USBBS CRC           Xmodem-CRC

  164. These ID's have no passwords and go through a special script
  165. which starts the download immediately after logon.  To help
  166. you automate your downloads, here are the phrases to wait
  167. for and the responses to enter:
  168.  
  169. WAIT FOR                      ENTER
  170. Graphics                      <Enter>
  171. LAST name                     {id};;
  172. Protocol starts immediately   start protocol download
  173.  
  174. Wait approximately 1 second after detecting each phrase.
  175.  
  176. Notice that there is a set of two semi-colons (";;") after
  177. the {id}.  This by-passes the password prompt.  You MUST
  178. enter this or you will get the "PASSWORD" prompt.  For
  179. example, you would enter "USBBS ZMODEM;;" in response to the
  180. "LAST name" prompt.
  181.  
  182. The connection is terminated immediately after the download
  183. is completed.

  185.                   --==[[  RELEASE SCHEDULE ]==--

  187. This is a release schedule for USBBS for the next several
  188. months.  The list is released on the last weekend of the
  189. month, unless there is some reason to revise this schedule.
  190. Here are a couple of known exceptions:
  191.  
  192. - If the first of the next month is on a weekend, the list
  193.   is released on that weekend.
  194. - If the last weekend of the month is a holiday weekend, the
  195.   list distribution may be adjusted.
  196. - If I will be out of town or otherwise occupied on the release
  197.   weekend, the list distribution will be adjusted.
  198.  
  199. The list is usually available sometime on Sunday afternoon of the
  200. release weekend.  If you want to avoid long distance calls, I'd
  201. suggest that you call Sunday after 10p, Pacific Time.  Of course,
  202. since this is my hobby, there are no guarantees.
  203.  
  204. All revisions for the list should be in by the MONDAY BEFORE
  205. THE RELEASE DATE to help insure that I get them and add them
  206. to the list.  Although some parts of this effort are automated,
  207. much is manual.  I cannot guarantee that I will be able to get
  208. revisions received after Monday into the next list edition.
  209.
