  8. In order to better support users of non-DOS systems, the Courier can now
  9. perform flash ROM updates via the Xmodem file transfer protocol found in
  10. most communications software.
  11.  
  12. Modems with firmware dated prior to 4/29/96 must first use SDL.EXE to
  13. install the new firmware code as usual.  After installing this SDL, the
  14. AT~X! command will be enabled.  If the flash ROM should ever get corrupted
  15. or downgraded, the Xmodem SDL feature will be lost, and SDL.EXE will have
  16. to be used to return the modem to normal operation.

  18. Modems that come from the factory with firmware dated 4/29/96 or later
  19. will always have Xmodem SDL available, even in the event of flash
  20. corruption or downgrade.
  21.  
  22. USRSDL.XMD is the Xmodem mode flash data file.   (This is the same
  23. firmware that is in the SDL.EXE file, but in a different format.) This
  24. is the file that you will send to the modem in Xmodem mode.  The file
  25. supplied with this release is for US/Canada versions of Courier internal,
  26. external, PS/2, and Comserver modems.

  30.           Sending New Firmware to the Courier using Xmodem SDL

  34. 1.  Start a communications software package, such as Quick Link II or
  35.     MacComCenter.  Adjust the settings, if necessary, so that you can
  36.     send AT to the Courier and get an OK response.  NOTE:  If you are
  37.     sending the file from a Macintosh computer, make sure that you do
  38.     NOT transfer the file in MacBinary format.  In MacComCenter, for
  39.     example, select Setup -> File Transfer and under MacBinary options,
  40.     select "Never MacBinary."

  42. 2.  Type AT~X! <Enter>.  The Courier will respond as follows:

  50.     Responding with 'Y' will begin the file transfer process; responding
  51.     'N' will abort the process and the modem will return to command mode.

  64.     'y' to begin an actual update of the flash ROM.

  73.     The Courier will begin sending 'C' characters which are used as part
  74.     of the Xmodem protocol handshaking.

  76.     You may now begin sending the .XMD file to the Courier using the
  77.     XMODEM-CRC or XMODEM-Checksum protocol in your communications software.

  79. 4.  After completion of the file transfer, the modem will display a result
  80.     message.

  95.     messages, your software upgrade is complete, and the modem will reset
  96.     and return to command mode.

  101.                        The Bootstrap Downloader

  105.     If the flash ROM should ever become corrupted, or the modem will not
  106.     respond to Xmodem or SDL.EXE download attempts, follow this procedure to
  107.     activate the flash ROM bootstrap downloader:
  108.  
  109. 1.  Power the Courier off.
  110.  
  111. 2.  Set DIP switches 1, 5, and 10 on and 8 off.  (For internal modems, use
  112.     1, 5, and 10 on, and 7 off.)  The settings of the other DIP switches
  113.     are ignored.
  114.  
  115. 3.  Power the Courier on.
  116.  
  117. 4.  Start your communications software package and send the operating
  118.     software using the XMODEM protocol, or use SDL.EXE as with previous
  119.     versions of the Courier firmware.
  120.  
  121. 5.  Power the Courier off.
  122.  
  123. 6.  Reset the DIP switches to their previous settings.
  124.  
  125. 7.  Power the Courier on.
