- ║ - INTRODUCTION - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- Crime Quest is a complex ANSI graphics BBS role playing game. Because of the
- program structure, and complex ANSI screens, it can only be played in the ANSI
- mode. Game development started in the mid-summer of 1994. I have worked hard
- to develop and produce a "HIGH QUALITY" BBS door game that would combine the
- aspects of Law Enforcement, the ease of playing, personal life experiences and
- bulletin board usage. This has now come about and is known as Crime Quest! I
- wish to personally thank you for downloading this game. This game is being
- produced as Shareware. If you use the game, and enjoy playing it, then I ask
- that you please REGISTER the software with the author, Brian Leiter. This BBS
- door game features the following:
-
- * More than 190 full color ANSI screens.
- * Fast display screens, some with cool ANIMATION.
- * 255 game levels when registered.
- * NPC player file, they can play the game too.
- * 3 nice little mental/challenge games inside
- * Choose your character as a Bad or Good guy.
- * Over 10 internal game cheat codes when registered.
- * Easy to use external game editor.
- * Quick INTERNAL maintenance program.
- * Backup option avaliable.
- * Internal Game Module (IGM) support for up to 70 IGM's.
- * Supports baud rates up to 115,200.
- * 100% Full Support from the author!
- * And a lot more fun and neat stuff.
-

- ║ - SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- You MUST have the following for Crime Quest to operate properly on your BBS:
-
- - 4 Meg Ram On Your System
- - 400K Free Ram Memory
- - 1024K Free EMS Memory (not XMS memory)
- - At LEAST a 9600 BPS Modem
- - DSZ must be somewhere in your PATH!
- - SET DSZPORT=?? is in your AUTOEXEC.BAT Where ?? is the port number!
-
- "CRIME QUEST" will work on almost any computer that is IBM compatible. The
- following conditions and/or software have been tested to work just fine:
-
- * IBM Compatible 386/486/586/686 and Pentium Systems
- * Systems with at LEAST 4 meg of RAM!
- * MS-DOS v3.3 and higher
- * DesqView v2.60 and higher

-
- "CRIME QUEST" has been written in Turbo Pascal v7.0 and compiled with Assembly
- Language serial input/output routines for maximum speed. It fully supports
- high speed modems, 16550 FIFO buffering and locked serial ports. "CRIME QUEST"
- has a built in ANSI terminal emulator. There is no need to have ANSI.SYS
- loaded in memory but it is HIGHLY recommended. This BBS door game is DesqView,
- Windows and OS/2 aware. It will support all of the most popular door data
- file formats:
-
- TriBBS, PCBoard, GAP (DOOR.SYS), Spitfire, WildCat!, RBBS, and WWIV. Thus a
- door that is built around compatibility with a wide range of BBS software.

- ║ - GAME INSTALLATION - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- NOTE: The word "CQ" will be used in place of the program name for any files in
- the documentation from this point on.
-
- [1] Create a CQ directory of your choice (Example: C:\SF\DOORS\CQ)
-
- [2] Unzip the compressed file CQ*.ZIP in this new directory. If this is a
- "NEW" installation, unzip the compressed file CONFIG.ZIP. If you are
- "UPGRADING" the game, then read the UPGRADE.TXT file. READ ALL THE DOC
- FILES CAREFULLY!
-
- [3] If you are not in the new directory, then change to the new directory.
-
- [4] Run the "CQEDITOR.EXE" program. Select "SETUP" and "DOOR CONFIG FILE" to
- set up your BBS nodes! This is EXTREEMLY IMPORTANT! Just answer the few
- questions asked. CQEDITOR.EXE will create a file called CQINIT.BAT!
-
- [5] If you want to install any of the IGM'S (DDS,LAWYER) then read those DOC
- files pertaining to that IGM.
-
- [6] You're basically set now... that was simple enough... Now, run the file
-
- CQINIT.BAT
-
- This will initialize the game! Just run the game in the LOCAL mode
- FIRST... to make SURE that you have done everything correctly and it will
- setup needed files if they don't already exist. To run the game in the
- LOCAL MODE (from DOS) enter in the following:
-
- CQSTART
-
-
- ╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
- ║ - RUNNING THE GAME - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- [1] This BBS door game is run by entering a command line similar to the
- following:
-
- CALL CQSTART.BAT 1
-
- In the above command line, "CALL" is the DOS procedure to call the start
- batch file "CQSTART.BAT". The following paramater is the NODE NUMBER for
- which the game will be run on. It is important that you use the editor
- make your config files or use an ASCII text editor. Above shows how the
- game would be run on node 1 of your BBS. If you do not "CALL" this batch
- file the game will not function properly and the IGMS will not work.
-
- Here is a short description of the config file(s):
-
- Line 1: Door data file type.
- Line 2: Path to the door data file(s).
- Line 3: Sysop's name.
- Line 4: BBS Name.
- Line 5: Locked baud rate.
-
- As illustrated above, the door's data file type is specified in line 1
- and can be PCB for PCBoard, GAP for GAP (DOOR.SYS), SF for Spitfire,
- RBBS for RBBS, WC for WildCat, TRIBBS for TriBBS, or WWIV for WWIV. The
- locked baud rate is specified in line 5. If the sysop doesn't lock his
- serial port, he must specify 0 for the locked baud rate.
-
- Although many door formats do pass the locked baud rate in the door data
- files, some older formats such as RBBS do not. For conformity, Crime Quest
- requires that you specify the locked baud rate in line 5 and ignores any
- value passed in the door data files. Nonstandard IRQ's can be used with
- Crime Quest by specifying the IRQ number after the config parameter in the
- command line used to run the door as follows:
-
- CALL CQSTART.BAT 1 IRQ
-
- [2] LOCAL MODE USE: Crime Quest can be run locally without a door data file
- (handy for the sysop to use the door without logging on to the BBS) by
- running the CQSTART.BAT file without any params. Crime Quest will request
- the user to enter his/her name before running the door.
-
- [3] SPECIAL KEYS: While a door is running, the sysop can press certain
- special keys to perform a variety of functions. The following is a list
- of the functions that the Crime Quest special keys perform:
-
- Key(s) Function
-
- HOME Toggles between the user status window and a help
- display that lists the door special keys.
-
-
-
- F6 Takes 5 minutes away from the caller. This will NOT
- be returned to BBS.
-
- F7 Gives 5 minutes to the caller. This will NOT be
- returned to the BBS.
-
- F9 Quit the door and return the caller to the BBS.
-
- F10 Enter chat mode. Pressing the ESC key exits the chat
- mode. Split screen, this is great!
-
- Alt+D Drop to DOS.
-
- [4] MULTI-NODE EXAMPLES: Multi-node usage has been tested to work however,
- there are currently NO online player fights at this time. This will come
- about in a future release. Listed below are SIMPLE examples for multi-
- node usage:
-
- CALL CQSTART.BAT 1 <--- For Node 1
- CALL CQSTART.BAT 2 <--- For Node 2
-
- [5] INTERBBS MODE: This feature has NOT been incorporated into the game yet.
- This may come about in a future version, at a later date.
-
- [6] Included is a program that will convert and update your CQPLAYER.DAT file.
- If you are currently running another version of Crime Quest, you MUST run
- this conversion utility and copy over ALL the *.EXE and *.OVR files.
-
- [7] Once registered, you will be able to use the CQWORDS.EXE program to edit
- the word file used in the Martial Arts Training section of the game.
-

- ║ - THE EDITOR - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- The Crime Quest editor is an IDE style editor. Just use your cursor keys to
- move around the main menu area. To select the highlighted area, just press
- enter. At the bottom of the screens, in the main menu area, you will see a
- brief description of what the selected option does. This editor is so easy to
- use that there really is no need for specific docs. Portions of this editor
- are restricted to registered mode only so, please remember to register your
- your copy of Crime Quest today.
-
-
- ╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
- ║ - IGM SUPPORT - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- Crime Quest currently supports up to "70" Internal Game Modules (IGM)! In the
- unregistered version, you can only access three (3) IGM's. Once registered you
- will be able to access all 70 (if you have that many). In this shareware file
- you should find CQREC.REC. This is the current record structures for the game
- Crime Quest. These record structures are needed when creating an IGM for this
- game. Available, in a seperate file, is CQIGMK*.ZIP! This is a doorkit that
- you can use to create your IGMS. It was created by Ross Cassell and it is the
- one that I used for DDS. Installing IGMS is simple. Just follow the DOCS
- written for the IGM that you want to install. You can obtain the latest kit
- from any of the distribution points. See above for instructions and details
- of the CQIGMS.DAT file.
-
- To install the IGM(s), read the DOC files pertaining to those IGM(s) that you
- want to install.
-
- If you have to temporarily disable an IGM, you can comment it out. Just place
- a ";" in front of the IGM name and command line. This will disable it.
-
-
- ╔════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
- ║ - NIGHTLY MAINTENANCE - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- Crime Quest uses an EXTERNAL program to perform its nightly maintenance event!
- This was created to speed up the game when a first player enters a new day. If
- you follow these simple steps, you will have no problem running the nightly
- maintenance. Maintenance should take place as close to midnight as possible.
-
- [1] Edit your nightly event batch file to include CQMAINT.EXE.
-
- Example: CD\SF\CQ
- CQMAINT.EXE
-
- It is that simple!
-

- ║ - RESTRICTIONS ON THE UNREGISTERED GAME - ║
- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- Until the game is registered the following restrictions are in effect:
-
- - The Player, NPC, Weapon and Armor Editors are non-functional. The game
- will use the defaults. It is NOT possible to see the settings or change
- them.
-
- - You are unable to use the Crime Quest word editor program.
-
- - Some game options have been disabled but, you can view them with the game
- editor. Changing them will not be saved.
-
- - Players can only go through 5 game levels and the game is UNWINNABLE!
-
- - Additions of Internal Game Modules (IGMS) will be limited to three (3).
-
- - No game config options will be avilable and the cheat codes will NOT be
- installed or available for player use.
-
- - There is a small DELAY at the end!
-
- - By REGISTERING the game, you will enable all editor functions and all of
- the above and allows you to alter almost all of the game settings.
