  1. Short description
  2. ----------------- 
  3. MSTBOOT 4.0 allows to access up to 12 operating systems stored on hard disk or 
  4. floppy. A partitioning of the storage media is not required any more.
  5. Right after switching on or resetting the computer a boot manager will be 
  6. activated enabling the user to choose between the available operating systems. 
  7. Moreover, the boot manager can optionally be envoced after a soft reset. If 
  8. there is no keyboard entry, the boot manager will automatically start the 
  9. operating system of the last session with some seconds of delay. When the 
  10. startup is completed, MSTBOOT frees al allocated RAM space.
  11. The installation an system adaption of the boot manager can be carried out 
  12. with a user-friendly dialogue program with online help under DOS.
  13.  
  14. First installation
  15. ------------------ 
  16. The first installation presupposes that you already have installed
  17. an operating system on the computer. 
  18. How to install the boot manager for the first time:
  19. 1. Unpack the file MSTBOOT.ZIP into any directory on your harddisk
  20. 2. Start from this directory the program SETUP.EXE.  It creates a
  21.    bootable diskette and copies the MSTBOOT files.  The diskette
  22.    contains a selection of CD ROM drivers with those almost all
  23.    types should to be supported.
  24. 3. Reboot the system from the new diskette (some systems block a direct 
  25.    hard disk access)
  26. 4. Start the boot manager MSTBOOT.EXE
  27. 5. The Wizard asks now for all necessary information to define
  28.    the current operating system in the boot manager.
  29. 6. Dismiss the boot manager with Alt+X
  30.  
  31. The boot manager installation is now completed. So far, however, only one
  32. operating system can be selected.
  33.  
  34. Additional operating systems
  35. ---------------------------- 
  36. How to add an additional operating system:
  37. 1. Reboot your computer from the with SETUP.EXE created diskette.
  38. 2. Start the boot manager MSTBOOT.EXE
  39. 3. Prepare the boot manager for the operating system to be added (Alt+B, P)
  40. 4. Dismiss the boot manager with Alt+X.
  41. 5. Install the operating system according to the instructions and make 
  42.    sure that the installation process will be fully completed which might 
  43.    also require a new start of the system
  44. 6. Now boot the system from the MSTBOOT diskette
  45. 7. Start the boot manager a second time, MSTBOOT.EXE
  46. 8. The Wizard asks now for all necessary information to define the
  47.    new operating system in the boot manager.
  48. 9. Dismiss the boot manager with Alt+X
  49.  
  50. The boot manager can now handle the new operating system.
  51.  
  52. CD-ROM installation
  53. ------------------- 
  54. How to install a new operating system from CD-ROM:
  55. The with SETUP.EXE created diskette contains a selection of CD ROM drivers
  56. with those almost all types should to be supported.  However if your drive
  57. needs different drivers, you should copy these also on the boot diskette and 
  58. the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT be altered. The name of the driver and the 
  59. corresponding parameters can be taken from the actual DOS configuration on the 
  60. system. An example can be given how the crucial lines might look if Mitsumi 
  61. CD-ROM drive will be used.:

  63. CONFIG.SYS:
  64.    DEVICE =A:\MTMCDAI.SYS /D:MTMIDE01
  65. AUTOEXEC.BAT:
  66.    MSCDEX.EXE /S /D:MTMIDE01 /M:10

  68. If an operating system is getting delivered with boot diskettes for the
  69. installation from CD-ROM, the copy of drivers might be dropped.
  70. It might be a good alternative to copy all installation files from CD-ROM to a 
  71. temporary directory on hard disk first and to start the installation process 
  72. from there, what needs checking for sufficient hard disk space.

  76. Test of MSTBOOT 4.0 have been made for the following operating systems (all
  77. higher versions should also run without problems):

  97. The boot manager will definitely not handle the following operating systems:
  98.    * IBM-DOS Version 4.x (or lower)
  99.    * MS-DOS Version 4.x (or lower)
  100.    * DR-DOS Version 5.0 (or lower)

  102. Data compression an boot drive
  103. ------------------------------ 
  104. If the boot drive content (typically C:) with the system files have been 
  105. compressed the boot manager must not be used.
  106. Compression of other drives does not disturb the use of the boot manager. It 
  107. must, however, be checked if an additional operating system to be installed 
  108. will support the existing compression method.
  109.  
  110. FAT32
  111. ----
  112. Starting from version 3.0 MSTBOOT supports also FAT32 drives. If your boot
  113. drive is formatted with FAT32, you must consider that you only can install
  114. such systems additionally, wich support also FAT32 (at present:
  115. WIN95B, WIN98, NT5.0).  If you plan a combination with other systems,
  116. then you could create either a smaller boot partition with FAT16, or use
  117. the function PARTITION LINK.
