  1.                    PALINDROME BACKUP DIRECTOR 4.0

  4. The \PAL\PBD40 directory contains an evaluation version of the Palin-
  5. drome Backup Director 4.0 - Netware Edition software.
  6.  
  7. The \PAL\PAL_PREP directory contains the necessary files for a server
  8. preparation.
  9.  
  10. The \PAL\DOCS directory contains a complete 'Installation guide',
  11. 'Administrator guide' and a 'Reference guide'. Please run SETUP.EXE
  12. from this directory to install the guide viewer.
  13.  
  14. Install the Hardware
  15. --------------------
  16.  
  17. Before installing the software, install a supported backup device,
  18. host adapter, and driver software appropriate for your type of
  19. machine.
  20.  
  21. Also, be sure to install a termination block on the last device in
  22. your SCSI bus.
  23.  
  24. For a list of certified backup devices and host adapters, see the
  25. README.TXT file in the \PAL\PBD40 directory.

  28. Workstation/Server Requirements
  29. -------------------------------
  30.  
  31. * Workstations must be able to run Windows 3.1 or 3.11 in enhanced
  32.   mode. Palindrome recommends a 486-based PC with 8 Mb of RAM.
  33.  
  34. * Color monitor is recommended.
  35.  
  36. * The latest versions of Netware's IPX (or IPXODI) and NETX or VLM.
  37.   VLMs are required to access Backup Director installations on Net-
  38.   ware 4.x servers.
  39.  
  40. * At least 8 Mb of disk space for the Windows executables and DLLs
  41.   and 3 Mb disk space on your SYS: volumes for NLMs.
  42.  
  43. * Server memory should have at least 3 Mb of avaible memory and 1
  44.   Mb of memory for each process (backup, restore, and/or utility)
  45.   you want to run. Thus, to run one process at a time you need 4 Mb
  46.   of RAM; to run three concurrently, you need 6 Mb of RAM.

  49. Before Installing the Software
  50. ------------------------------
  51.  
  52. You can install Backup Director on any Netware 3.11, 3.12, 4.02 and
  53. 4.1 server.
  54.  
  55. To ensure your servers are running the most recent NetWare modules
  56. and backup agents (called Target Service Agents or TSAs) are copied
  57. to your server, you must run SETUP.NLM on your servers.
  58.  
  59. SETUP.NLM automatically copies Palindrome NCF files, updated TSAs,
  60. and Netware modules to each server you are backup up. You should run
  61. SETUP.NLM on all servers that you want to back up prior to installing
  62. Backup Director.
  63.  
  64. * To run SETUP.NLM on your server, you must create Server Preparation
  65. Diskettes:
  66.  
  67. 1. Change to the ...\PAL_PREP directory on the Evalution CD.
  68. 2. Copy the contents of the \DISK1 directory to one blank, formatted
  69.    diskette.
  70. 3. Copy the contents of the \DISK2 directory to a second blank, for-
  71.    matted diskette.
  72.  
  73. * Run SETUP.NLM:
  74.  
  75. 1. Insert the first diskette (that you created in the previous steps)
  76.    into the local drive of your server.
  77.  
  78. 2. At the server console, type:
  79.  
  80.    LOAD A:SETUP
  81.    (where A: is the drive your diskette is in.)
  82.  
  83. 3. The program informs you if you need to down the server. If neces-
  84.    sary, down the server(s) to ensure any modules that were updated
  85.    are loaded on the server(s). If you do not need to down the ser-
  86.    ver, run PALSTART.NCF on the server(s).
  87.  
  88.    At the server console prompt, type:
  89.  
  90.    PALSTART
  91.  
  92. 4. PALSTART.NCF contains statements to automatically load required
  93.    files such as your device driver, Palindrome NLMs, and Target
  94.    Service Agents. SETUP.NLM copies PALSTART.NCF to the SYS:\SYSTEM
  95.    directory of each server that you run SETUP.NLM on.
  96.  
  97. * Create the Auto Login User
  98.  
  99. To access servers and the job queue, Backup Director rely on an auto
  100. login user (a user you define or that is already defined on the net-
  101. work). Using a single auto login user to attach to remote servers
  102. provides maximum security during operations.
  103.  
  104. Auto Login User Requirements:
  105. During installation of the software, you will be prompted to specify
  106. a single auto login user (either a Bindery user or as an NDS user)
  107. that is stored in the program's System Control Database. If the auto
  108. login user doesn't exist on those servers (or in the NDS tree), the
  109. program prompts you to specify a user and password to access those
  110. resources when you attempt to configure the resources for backup
  111. operations.
  112.   
  113. During installation of the software, the user installing the software
  114. displays as the auto login user name. You can use this user or any
  115. other existing user that has supervisor-equivalent rights to each
  116. server you want to back up.
  117.   
  118. Rights:
  119. In NetWare 3.x environments, the auto login user must exist on every
  120. server and have supervisor-equivalent rights. In NetWare 4.x environ-
  121. ments, the user only needs to exist once in the tree and should have
  122. supervisor object rights to each server object you want to back up
  123. and to the container that the installation server is in.

  126. Install the Software
  127. --------------------
  128.  
  129. * Load PALLOADR on the installation server
  130.  
  131. PALLOADR.NLM allows Backup Director or Storage Manager to automati-
  132. cally load other Palindrome NLMs while running the install program
  133. from a Windows workstation. PALLOADR is copied to your installation
  134. server when you run SETUP.NLM.
  135.  
  136. If you have already loaded PALSTART.NCF, PALLOADR should already be
  137. loaded and you can skip this step.
  138.  
  139. 1. From the server console prompt of your installation server, type:
  140.                                                                    
  141.    LOAD PALLOADR
  142.                                                                       
  143. 2. Log in to the network as a supervisor-equivalent user (you must
  144.    have rights to create directories and users). In a 4.x environ-
  145.    ment, the user installing the software must have write rights to
  146.    all properties of the root object and supervisor object rights to
  147.    the container the installation server is in.
  148.                                                                       
  149. 3. Be sure you have a drive mapped to the volume where you will
  150.    install Backup Director or Storage Manager.
  151.  
  152. 4. At a workstation, run Windows.
  153.  
  154. 5. Open the File menu and select Run. In the command line text box,
  155.    type:

  157.    <DIR>\PAL\PBD40\SETUP.EXE
  158.  
  159.    (where <DIR> is the CD-ROM directory where the Evaluation software
  160.    is located).
  161.  
  162.    Follow the instructions on screen. If you do not have a serial
  163.    number, phone S.H.A.R.K! 02521-20052, after 10-10-95 0252-420052.

  165.    NOTE: If you are currently using Palindrome software, do not up-
  166.          grade your installation with the evaluation version of the
  167.          software. Choose a directory other than your current instal-
  168.          lation directory when prompted.
  169.  
  170. 6. At the end of the installation program, you will be asked whether
  171.    or not to add the installation server to the Protected Resource
  172.    List. Choose OK.
  173.  
  174. 7. To run your first backup immediately, choose YES when prompted.
