  38. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
  39. *Windows 3.x or Windows 95 
  40. *486/33MHz or faster
  41. *8 MB RAM
  42. *256-color SVGA graphics
  43. *Double-speed CD-ROM drive

  45. *Requires QuickTime 2.1 or higher:
  46.     -Windows 3.x uses the 16-bit version of QuickTime 2.1
  47.     -Windows 95 uses the 32-bit version of QuickTime 2.1

  53. QUICKTIME:
  54. Some of the Previews on the Davidson Product Sampler require
  55. QuickTime 2.1 or higher in order to run.
  56.  
  57. QuickTime 2.1 is included with the install.  You may choose 
  58. to install it or not.  However, if you choose NOT to install 
  59. QuickTime 2.1, and do not already have QuickTime 2.1 or higher 
  60. installed on your machine, you will have problems running some 
  61. of the Previews included on the Davidson Product Sampler.
  62.  
  63. The install will check your machine for your current version of 
  64. QuickTime.  If QuickTime 2.1 or higher is not already installed 
  65. on your machine, you will have the option to install it at that 
  66. time.  
  67.  
  68. You will be able to install the 16-bit and 32-bit versions of 
  69. QuickTime 2.1 outside of the install by doing the following steps:
  70.    
  71.    *Open the Dps_app directory on your CD-ROM drive
  72.    *Then open the QTWFILES directory
  73.    *Double-click the QuickTime install icon:
  74.        -If you are running Windows 95, double-click the 
  75.         QT32inst.exe to launch the QuickTime 2.1 (32-bit) 
  76.         install.
  77.        -If you are running Windows 3.x, double-click the
  78.         QT16inst.exe to launch the QuickTime 2.1 (16-bit)
  79.         install.

  83. COMPAQ COMPUTERS:
  84.  
  85. To avoid problems when running the Davidson Product Sampler
  86. on Compaq machines while using the Compaq wallpaper, we
  87. suggest that the wallpaper be turned off or set to NONE.
  88. To change your wallpaper, go to Control Panel, Display. Refer
  89. to your Windows documentation for further details.
  90.  
  91. If you still encounter a problem, try changing your display
  92. settings to 256 colors. See CHANGING YOUR COLOR DEPTH below.

  96. CHANGING YOUR COLOR DEPTH
  97.  
  98. The Davidson Product Sampler was designed to run in 256-colors.
  99. If you experience problems running any part of the Davidson 
  100. Product Sampler, try changing your display settings to a higher
  101. color depth.
  102.  
  103. To increase the number of colors in Windows 95:
  104.  
  105. 1. From the START menu, go to SETTINGS
  106. 2. From the SETTINGS menu, select CONTROL PANEL
  107. 3. From CONTROL PANEL, select DISPLAY
  108. 4. A DISPLAY PROPERTIES dialogue box will appear
  109. 5. Select the SETTINGS tab at the top of the Display Properties 
  110.    dialogue box
  111. 6. Go the the COLOR option, and increase the number of colors
  112.  
  113.  
  114. To increase the number of colors in Windows 3.x:
  115.  
  116. 1. From the Program Manager, double-click the Windows Setup Icon 
  117.    in the Main Group
  118. 2. From the Options menu on the Windows Setup box, select Change 
  119.    System Settings.                         
  120. 3. Write down the driver name displayed in the box in case you 
  121.    wish to change it back later.
  122. 4. Click the arrow to the far right of the word "DISPLAY". You 
  123.    will see a list of Video Drivers.
  124. 5. Adjacent to your current driver, you may have other drivers 
  125.    listed which use a higher color depth. Example: 640x480x64K 
  126.    may be your next highest color depth. WARNING: Only use 
  127.    display drivers that are compatible with your video card! Consult
  128.    your Video Card documentation for more information.
  129. 6. Select the appropriate driver and click OK.
  130. 7. You will have to re-start Windows for the new settings to take
  131.    effect.

  135. VIDEO DRIVERS:
  136.  
  137. Some Video Drivers may cause problems when running the
  138. portions of the Davidson Product Sampler.  If you experience 
  139. any unusual screen activity, switch to the Super VGA (SVGA) mode.  
  140.  
  141. Included on your CD ROM are Updated SVGA Video Driver Files 
  142. which may be helpful to you when changing your Video Driver Mode.  
  143. Below are some detailed instructions on how to install a Video 
  144. Driver chosen from the Video Driver Files.
  145.  
  146. To Change Your Video Mode:
  147. 1. From the Program Manager, double-click the Windows Setup Icon 
  148.    in the Main Group
  149. 2. From the Options menu on the Windows Setup box, select Change 
  150.    System Settings.                         
  151. 3. Write down the driver name displayed in the box in case you 
  152.    wish to change it back later.
  153. 4. Click the arrow to the far right of the word "DISPLAY". You 
  154.    will see a list of Video Drivers.
  155. 5. Scroll to the bottom of the list until you see the words 
  156.    "OTHER DISPLAY".
  157. 6. In the dialog box type the following "D:\previews\svga" 
  158.    (if your CD ROM drive is other than "D" type the appropriate 
  159.    drive letter instead.)
  160. 7. After the driver list appears, double click on the "SUPER VGA 
  161.    (640x480 256 color)" entry.
  162. 8. Re-start Windows.

  164. To return to your previous driver, repeat the above steps and at 
  165. step #5 scroll through the list until you find the name and the 
  166. driver you previously wrote down instead of choosing "OTHER 
  167. DISPLAY."  After selecting your driver name press enter and 
  168. follow the on-screen instructions.

  170. If you have any of the following video cards in your PC, contact 
  171. your video manufacturer and ask how to get the video card to use 
  172. a standard Windows driver (e.g., SVGA).
  173.

  176.    Diamond*                                Dell
  177.    Any driver using the word "MACH"
  178.  
  179. *Diamond has a BBS at (408) 325-7175;  you can download updated 
  180. drivers including 968133.exe which may cure all ills.

  182. If you don't know what brand video driver you have, exit Windows 
  183. and at C:\>, type MSD.  Under 'Video' section, there may be a 
  184. listing of the manufacturer of the video card or video chip 
  185. installed on your computer.
  186.  
  187. WARNING:  Please note the brand of video driver that you are 
  188. using. You may need to switch between alternate drivers.  Video 
  189. drivers are written for the brand of video card you are currently
  190. using, and we advise that you do not change brands of video 
  191. drivers without first consulting the maker of your video card.

  199. OPTIMIZING PERFORMANCE:
  200.  
  201. On some PC configurations, the speed of these Previews may appear 
  202. slow. To optimize the performance of your PC and increase the 
  203. speed at which these demos run, try these helpful tips.
  204.  
  205. 1.  Turn OFF any virus scanning programs and screen savers that 
  206.     might be running.
  207.  
  208. 2.  Turn OFF ALL applications except for the 'Program Manager' 
  209.     (if you are running an alternate desktop, leave only your 
  210.     desktop program running).
  211.  
  212. 3.  Set screen resolution to 640x480 [Refer to your Windows guide 
  213.     on Running the Setup Program or Setting Up Windows]
  214.  
  215. 4.  Set the number of colors to be displayed to 256 (some color 
  216.     cards may require colors to be set at 65,536; 65,535; 64K; or 
  217.     65K, depending on vendor) [Refer to the section above title
  218.     CHANGING YOUR COLOR DEPTH].

  220. If the suggestions above still do not result in satisfactory 
  221. performance, you may have a fragmented disk. Use your Windows 95
  222. Disk Defragmenter to optimize your hard drive.
