Baud is the speed at which modems transfer data. This transfer rate is often shown as 33.6k bps, or 14.4k bps, which stands for 33,600 bits per second, 14,400 bits per second, respectively. A single character of data consists of 1 byte which is made up from 8 bits, therefore 4,200 characters per second could be transferred.
