Robert Dale Owen, the 19th-century American social reformer, figured out that since New York had 20,000 prostitutes (1830 figure), and each of them had three clients a day, then half of the adults in the city were visiting a prostitute three times a week. Owen made allowances for free weekends and respites for menstruation.
