In China, where polygamy flourished, Taoists frequently went to prostitutes not for sexual intercourse...but to escape from it. Houses of pleasure, called green bowers because they were colored green, offered tranquillity, good food, dancing, poetry, and eventually a night's hospitality.
Sex-only brothels were rare and generally to be found only in poor districts.
