In early Rome there was a temple dedicated to a God called Mutinus Titinus. Girls clad in special togas came to sit on its phallus and offer it their virginity.
This ceremony was supposed to make them fertile and ward off evil spirits. These rites continued well into the Christian era, but came to an end when the Church destroyed the temple to the phallic god.
