In Athens, the phallus on a statue of the god Hermes was used as a talisman against the evil eye. A statue with a bearded head and an erect penis carved out of a pillar of squared stone marked every street corner.
Passersby saluted the phallus, and some rubbed it with oil and adorned it with anemones.
