In Japan, adulterous sexual activity was ruthlessly suppressed during the Tokugawa period (1788-1804). Eloping lovers, if caught, were executed, in some cases by crucifixion.
If they died in each other's arms, they were buried together. To this day, in Japanese cemeteries there are graves of the "hiyohuzuka," or interlocked lovers.
