The great Greek physician Hippocrates (b. 460 BC), locating these women in Scythia, tells of women who fought with bows and javelins while riding horses, and who fought only as long as they were virgins. They married after killing three enemies.
In Ptolemy's account, the Amazons were located in Colchis, Phrygia, and Bithynia. Of great stature, these women were vigorous and warlike, well trained in the use of arms. For the most part, they avoided men. One distinguishing feature was a missing right breast, which they excised to improve their fighting abilities.
