Shinto mythology is rife with spirits and demons. There is the evil spirit Suzano-wo, who is known for such tricks as overflowing the banks of the heavenly river or smearing excrement over a sacred offering of rice.
There are also the Oni, who may be either good or bad - and they are pervasive. You may find them in the wind, in trees, in kitchen utensils, or in holy temples. They have even been found in the private parts of a woman, and have made their presence known at the most inconvenient moments.
