The sun goddess of Shinto mythology, Amaterasu-omikami, once, in anger, condemned the world to darkness when she decided to retreat forever into a cave.
She did this because, as she was weaving in the company of the celestial weavers, the evil spirit Suzano-wo cast down on the group one of the Spotted Horses of Heaven - which was all cut into bits. Startled, one of the weavers mortally wounded herself in the genitals with a needle. This incident provoked Amaterasu-omikami to wrath.
