The image of sexual intercourse is central to the creation myth of Shintoism, the ancient religion of Japan. The story begins with chaos in the shape of an egg. Out of that were born seven generations of gods - all invisible.
In the seventh generation, the god Izanagi and the goddess Izanami were born. They plunged an ornamented spear, a symbolic phallus, into "magma," a symbolic vagina. Out of that vagina came the first island, Onogoro-Jima.
