Until the 12th century, Taoism and Confucianism were both widely practiced in China. Ultimately, however, Confucianism triumphed over the more indulgent philosophy of Taoism.
The result was the adoption of a class system and a more rigid moral and legal code - all in opposition to Taoism. As a result of this shift, women's position in society changed dramatically.
