Some of the writers and philosophers of the Enlightenment period advocated divorce, polygamy (not only for men), incest, and even bestiality. The German philosopher and mathematician Leibniz devoted some thought to polygamy.
Diderot, believing that nothing that exists can be "against nature or outside nature," denounced as a scientific disgrace the campaign against masturbation. He also joined ranks with the Marquis de Sade in defending bestiality and incest.
