Before the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot, his wife, and two daughters fled Sodom. His wife disobeyed the angels by turning back and was transformed into a pillar of salt. Lot and his two daughters took refuge in a cave. Wishing to continue their father's lineage, one daughter said to the other: "Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father" (Genesis 19.32).
Ben-ammi and Moab were born of the incestuous love of Lot and his two daughters. The Moabites descended from the son of the firstborn daughter, the Ammonnites, from the son of the younger daughter.
