The goddess Cybele predates the male gods' rise to patriarchal prominence. She and other goddesses took mortal men as lovers: Cybele took a young lover named Attis; Astarte had Adonis; Ishtar had Tammuz. Violent death often followed this kind of union. After a tragic discovery, Attis became crazed, castrated himself and died from the wound.
