Some evidence suggests that a child, most probably fathered by a polygamous man, was considered the offspring solely of the mother, just as the earth bears fruit without assistance.
It seems that the link between sexual intercourse and conception was not obvious to our early ancestors, and so they didn't make much of the biological father. No doubt, this limited understanding of the repercussions of sexual activity made prehistoric humanity rather liberal in its attitudes to sex.
