- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- This game is SHAREWARE!
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Formula 2000 is software that you can try before you buy. The
- shareware version contains only a quarter of the full game and you can
- play it as long as you want. Registration buys you the full game, see
- ORDER.DOC for details.
-
- As long as you don't modify or remove any of the files you can copy
- the Shareware version amongst your friends. This does not apply to
- the Registered version. Please see VENDOR.DOC for licensing
- information.
-
- This software is provided as is, in no event shall Spark
- Developments be liable for any loss or damage whatsoever arising
- directly or indirectly out of the use or inability to use this
- program, and in no event will the liability exceed the purchase price
- paid by you for the program.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Description
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Formula 2000 is a multi-directional scrolling overhead race game.
- Race against upto 7 computer controlled cars across tracks which
- increase in difficulty and size.
-
- The shareware version has 3 tracks (easy, fair and medium), the
- registered version includes 9 additional tracks (some with parallax
- scrolling), more graphics, faster cars (rocket cars with jets!) and
- harder tracks.
-
- Win each race by coming first to progress through the game. The
- races are all four laps long.
-
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Main Option Screen
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Use the cursor keys to move the selector arrow and press return or
- fire buttone to select the option. The options are pretty much self
- explanatory, except "sound" and "smooth". Move to the sound option
- and use the left/right cursor keys to adjust the volume.
-
- The "smooth" option enables a page flipped mode of the VGA to prevent
- "shearing" of the scrolling screen. If during the game the screen
- seems to tear in half then activate this option to prevent it. This
- option is strictly for faster machines(486+). Lesser machines have
- to suffer (sorry).
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Controls
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Keyboard:
- - Ctrl = acclerate, and the left/right cursor keys turn the car.
-
- Joystick:
- - button 1 accelerates (release to decelerate)
-
- press Esc during the game to pause, you also get the option to
- restart or quit. If restart is selected you lose a credit but you
- don't have to wait for all the other cars to finish to lose the race
- (which you may need to if you know you can't win).
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Main Display (during game)
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- From top left to right:
-
- - LAP tells you the lap you're on. The time beside it is your
- current lap time.
-
- - BEST tells you the best lap time set for this race so far (the
- computer cars can set this time as well).
-
- - RECORD tells you the current track record. If you beat the
- record, the record time will start flashing and the car that
- set the record will be displayed beside it.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Sound Support
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- The sound system supports the soundblaster/16/Pro, Gravis Ultrasound
- and Ensoniq Soundscape. The card is detected at startup through its
- environment variable, if the variable doesn't exist you won't get any
- sound. Make sure the environment variable relevant to your card is
- set before you start:
-
- e.g. SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1
- SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,11
- SET SNDSCAPE=....
-
- The setup program that comes with your card should have set these up
- in your autoexec.bat file. Refer to the soundcard's documentation for
- details.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Command Line Options
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- You can override the following defaults in F2000:
-
- nosound - disables the sound system
- nojoy - disables the joystick (even if a joystick is plugged in).
- This allows you to skip the calibration screen if you prefer
- using the keyboard.
- smooth - activates the smooth option
-
- Examples: C:\>F2000 nojoy smooth
- C:\>F2000 nosound nojoy smooth
- C:\>F2000 smooth
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Questions and Answers
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- 1. How come the joystick doesn't work when I plug it in?
-
- - The joystick needs to be plugged in at startup for the joystick
- detection routine. Quit the game, plug in the joystick and start
- again.
-
- 2. Why is the game running slowly on my 386SX and SoundBlaster(or
- compatible)?
-
- - The plain SoundBlaster has a single digital output channel. The
- music and sound samples are mixed in realtime which sucks up
- processor time. Its been tested to run smoothly on a 386SX-40,
- but if you're having problems the only way to get it running
- smoothly would be to disable the sound. To disable the sound,
- at startup type "F2000 nosound".
-
- NOTE: If the program crashes at startup and you suspect the soundcard
- type "F2000 nosound" to start with no sound (that should help determine
- whether the card or drivers are playing up).
-
-
- 3. The game locks up when I try to start it, what should I do?
-
- - Er.. don't panic ... see the NOTE in Question 3.
-
-
- 4. I get "couldn't allocate ???????" messages, how can I fix this?
-
- - The game is running out of memory, so make a boot disk which
- loads the bare minimum of TSRs (i.e. mouse driver, doskey),
- then try and run it again.
-
- 5. Activating the smooth option every time I start is annoying, is
- there a shortcut?
-
- - Yes, see the command line options above.
-
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
