- How to Play
-
- The Rules of Tennis (only if you are unfamiliar with the game).
-
- A player, standing behind his baseline, uses a racket to serve the
- ball over the net. For the serve to be good, it has to land in the
- "service court" of the receiver. This is the rectangular area closest
- to the net and in front of the opposing player. It takes up about a
- quarter of one side. A point is scored when:
-
- one of the players fails to return the ball
-
- if the ball bounces twice on the same side of the court
-
- the ball lands outside the boundaries of the court ("OUT!")
-
- when the server fails to serve the ball properly
- (e.g. hitting the ball twice into the net or not serving it
- to the service court, again "OUT!" in Top Tennis).
-
- The court boundaries are demarcated by white lines. The outer set are
- for doubles matches, the inner set for singles matches
-
- A game is won, by the first player to win 4 points by a 2 point
- margin. The first point is called 15, the second 30, the third 40 and
- the fourth "game". A zero score is called "love". Hence a score during
- a game maybe "15 love" (15-0) if the server is winning, or "love 15"
- if the receiver of the serve is winning. If both sides reach 40 (a
- condition known as "deuce"), one of the players must win two
- consecutive points to win the game. After deuce, the next point is
- "advantage", as in "advantage Smith" (Smith being the name of the
- player who has just won the point). The next point after advantage, if
- Smith wins the next point as well, is game. If he loses the next point,
- the score reverts to deuce.
-
- The first side to win 6 games by a 2 game margin, wins a "Set". A
- match can consist of 3 or 5 sets. The first side to win 2 of 3, or 3
- of 5 sets wins the match. Typically, women's or doubles matches
- consist of 3 sets.
