- Welcome to the DTP Toolbox
-
- Please Note: If you would prefer a hard copy of this,
- load the file into a word processor or ProPage, and
- print it from there.
-
- Installation Notes:
- Many of the programs will run from CD, while others
- will need to be installed on to your hard drive. In
- order to use ProPage (and ProDraw) from the CD, a
- number of files need to be copied to the S directory
- and Libs directory on your hard drive.
-
- Warning:
- It is not possible as far as I know to run ProPage
- from both Hard drive and CD because the support files
- in the S drawer are different.
-
- S Drawer:
- If you want to run ProPage/ProDraw from both, then
- make two S drawers, one for each version. It should
- be possible to create a script that will copy the
- support files required for each version from a
- storage directory to the S drawer as and when needed.
- This is something we will look at in the future and
- make available on a free update disk.
-
-
- CGFonts and other assigns
- In ProPage's drawer is an assign icon which needs to
- be double clicked before running ProPage. If you
- intend using ProPage/ProDraw from your hard drive,
- you can a similar one for that version. It is even
- possible to make a different one for different
- CGFonts drawer and just use which ever one you
- require. The only point to be aware of is that these
- CGFonts drawers need to be called CGFonts to avoid a
- clash with the PPage.ini file and others in the S
- directory.
-
- If you have any queries, write into Em and we'll look
- at in there.
-
-
- Viewing Images:
- The thumbnails (mainly for the EMC CD Index screens)
- on this CD are set to use PPshow for viewing but on
- some monitors, like mine which is a SVGA, there is a
- problem with the screenmode. To get around this, you
- can use a couple of utils that are in the Tools
- drawer on this CD.
-
- One is Tool Alias which will intercept any call for
- PPshow and replace it with one of your choice. Just
- run ToolAlias and set old to :PPshow and New to :VT
- and Toolalias will make your Amiga use VT instead of
- PPshow.
-
- Newmode is different in that it will enable you to
- choose a screenmode for programs that don't allow you
- to choose screen modes. So when you click on VT, if
- an image has a screen resolution of 640 x 512 (which
- looks awful in Productivity), NewMode will allow you
- to change the displayed screen mode to one suitable
- for your monitor.
-
- I find it easier to view the thumbnail indexes using
- a file manager like Opus or DirWork although even
- with these, I found I needed to run a program like
- Newmode to make sure the viewer opened up on a screen
- compatible with my monitor and screen mode.
-
- History of DTP ToolBox
- As many of you will know, LH Publishing is dedicated
- to the Amiga and is the publisher of Em magazine. Now
- Em magazine is something we do as a service to the
- community, while CDs like this, are produced to help
- keep the magazine going as well as provide new
- products which we feel will be of help to Amiga
- owners.
-
- DTP ToolBox however wasn't something we came up with
- the aim of supporting the magazine. The CD was
- produced originally to help make our life easier here
- by putting everything we use together on the one CD.
- A typical example of course is ProPage and ProDraw
- but they are not alone. One of the first things we
- did was take all the thumbnail index screens off
- Phase 1, 2 & 3 (see "Special Offer" if you do not
- have these yet) so that when we need a piece of clip
- art, we can find one without having to swap CDs.
-
- We then put all the fonts together in alphabetical
- order so they matched the fonts in the Font reference
- book we have called EMC.Info (Only available from
- us). We also stuck a whole load of photographs on the
- CD for illustration purposes. The list goes on and
- on.
-
- Anyway, it wasn't until a customer was here receiving
- some paid advice that we saw the potential of the CD.
- The customer pointed out how useful the CD would be
- and asked us to sell him a copy. No problem we
- thought and thus was born the DTP Toolbox.
-
- Since then, we have worked hard at putting together a
- whole lot of templates, utils and lots more that we
- think will help you in the use of your Amiga for
- publishing and general day to day jobs. It is not
- perfect and I could probably spend months on it fine
- tuning it, but I haven't got months. In fact, I've
- got a lot of you waiting for it right now!
-
- We will however continue working on DTP Toolbox to
- make it better. Just like a piece of software that is
- made better from time to time, we intend to do the
- same with DTP Toolbox. Over the coming months we will
- add bits and pieces like new programs, templates,
- images, and lots more. When we think we have a worthy
- follow up, we will release it and those who have
- already bought DTP ToolBox will be entitled to a
- discount on the new follow up that is yet to be
- finalised.
-
- Updates (like new templates) on floppy disk will
- follow for this CD and will be available free to
- registered users.
-
- Custom CDs
- While speaking to many of you on the phone, some have
- asked if they can place their own files on the CD.
- The answer to this is yes. However, as you already
- have the CD, its a bit late for this but we can offer
- you the option of doing custom CDs just for you.
- Details on this will vary but the idea is to give you
- the same option we give ourselves. That is, to
- collect all the often used files and programs and
- stick them on CD.
-
- There are many ways we can do this and because of
- this, the cost of such a job will vary depending on
- how much work is required. If you are interested in
- this, give us a call and we'll talk it over. The
- simplest option for us to have from you a hard drive
- with the files laid out the way you want and we'll
- just make an ISO file from this.
-
- Other options are to give us a PD disk for the
- Panasonic PD system and we can make an ISO image from
- that. Or you can send your Amiga to us and we'll
- Parnet the two and copy files from a hard drive to
- our spare and make an ISO from this.
-
-
- What we wouldn't entertain (except for a large fee)
- is to have 500 floppy disks to place on CD. Because
- the Zip drives are popular, we may be looking at
- utilising these as a format for transferring files to
- and from readers machines.
-
- There's more to CD though than just using it as a
- storage medium. Maybe you have a pet project that you
- want on CD, well we can help. As you can see from
- this CD, it is possible to create low run Gold CDs
- that look the business and work just like silver
- ones. If you want to know more, call, LH Publishing
- on 01908 370 230 and talk to us about what you want.
-
- Usage:
- What follows is a few notes on using the CD. This is
- by no means comprehensive but is intended as a way of
- helping you get more from it. For example, take some
- HTML files we have on the CD in the TextFiles drawer.
- These can found buried a few draws down in a drawer
- called AmigaFAQ. These HTML files can be viewed by
- using a utility called AWeb which is in the WEB
- drawer, a sub directory of the Text drawer in
- Utilities.
