  1.     Welcome to the DTP Toolbox

  3.     Please Note: If you would prefer a hard copy of this, 
  4.     load the file into a word processor or ProPage, and 
  5.     print it from there.

  7.     Installation Notes: 
  8.     Many of the programs will run from CD, while others 
  9.     will need to be installed on to your hard drive. In 
  10.     order to use ProPage (and ProDraw) from the CD, a 
  11.     number of files need to be copied to the S directory 
  12.     and Libs directory on your hard drive.
  13.  
  14.     Warning:
  15.     It is not possible as far as I know to run ProPage 
  16.     from both Hard drive and CD because the support files 
  17.     in the S drawer are different. 
  18.  
  19.     S Drawer:
  20.     If you want to run ProPage/ProDraw from both, then 
  21.     make two S drawers, one for each version. It should 
  22.     be possible to create a script that will copy the 
  23.     support files required for each version from a 
  24.     storage directory to the S drawer as and when needed. 
  25.     This is something we will look at in the future and 
  26.     make available on a free update disk.

  29.     CGFonts and other assigns
  30.     In ProPage's drawer is an assign icon which needs to 
  31.     be double clicked before running ProPage. If you 
  32.     intend using ProPage/ProDraw from your hard drive, 
  33.     you can a similar one for that version. It is even 
  34.     possible to make a different one for different 
  35.     CGFonts drawer and just use which ever one you 
  36.     require. The only point to be aware of is that these 
  37.     CGFonts drawers need to be called CGFonts to avoid a 
  38.     clash with the PPage.ini file and others in the S 
  39.     directory.

  41.     If you have any queries, write into Em and we'll look 
  42.     at in there.

  45.     Viewing Images:
  46.     The thumbnails (mainly for the EMC CD Index screens) 
  47.     on this CD are set to use PPshow for viewing but on 
  48.     some monitors, like mine which is a SVGA, there is a 
  49.     problem with the screenmode. To get around this, you 
  50.     can use a couple of utils that are in the Tools 
  51.     drawer on this CD.

  53.     One is Tool Alias which will intercept any call for 
  54.     PPshow and replace it with one of your choice. Just 
  55.     run ToolAlias and set old to :PPshow and New to :VT 
  56.     and Toolalias will make your Amiga use VT instead of 
  57.     PPshow.

  59.     Newmode is different in that it will enable you to 
  60.     choose a screenmode for programs that don't allow you 
  61.     to choose screen modes. So when you click on VT, if 
  62.     an image has a screen resolution of 640 x 512 (which 
  63.     looks awful in Productivity), NewMode will allow you 
  64.     to change the displayed screen mode to one suitable 
  65.     for your monitor.

  67.     I find it easier to view the thumbnail indexes using 
  68.     a file manager like Opus or DirWork although even 
  69.     with these, I found I needed to run a program like 
  70.     Newmode to make sure the viewer opened up on a screen 
  71.     compatible with my monitor and screen mode.

  73.     History of DTP ToolBox
  74.     As many of you will know, LH Publishing is dedicated 
  75.     to the Amiga and is the publisher of Em magazine. Now 
  76.     Em magazine is something we do as a service to the 
  77.     community, while CDs like this, are produced to help 
  78.     keep the magazine going as well as provide new 
  79.     products which we feel will be of help to Amiga 
  80.     owners.
  81.  
  82.     DTP ToolBox however wasn't something we came up with 
  83.     the aim of supporting the magazine. The CD was 
  84.     produced originally to help make our life easier here 
  85.     by putting everything we use together on the one CD. 
  86.     A typical example of course is ProPage and ProDraw 
  87.     but they are not alone. One of the first things we 
  88.     did was take all the thumbnail index screens off 
  89.     Phase 1, 2 & 3 (see "Special Offer" if you do not 
  90.     have these yet) so that when we need a piece of clip 
  91.     art, we can find one without having to swap CDs.
  92.  
  93.     We then put all the fonts together in alphabetical 
  94.     order so they matched the fonts in the Font reference 
  95.     book we have called EMC.Info (Only available from 
  96.     us). We also stuck a whole load of photographs on the 
  97.     CD for illustration purposes. The list goes on and 
  98.     on.

  100.     Anyway, it wasn't until a customer was here receiving 
  101.     some paid advice that we saw the potential of the CD. 
  102.     The customer pointed out how useful the CD would be 
  103.     and asked us to sell him a copy. No problem we 
  104.     thought and thus was born the DTP Toolbox.
  105.  
  106.     Since then, we have worked hard at putting together a 
  107.     whole lot of templates, utils and lots more that we 
  108.     think will help you in the use of your Amiga for 
  109.     publishing and general day to day jobs. It is not 
  110.     perfect and I could probably spend months on it fine 
  111.     tuning it, but I haven't got months. In fact, I've 
  112.     got a lot of you waiting for it right now!

  114.     We will however continue working on DTP Toolbox to 
  115.     make it better. Just like a piece of software that is 
  116.     made better from time to time, we intend to do the 
  117.     same with DTP Toolbox. Over the coming months we will 
  118.     add bits and pieces like new programs, templates, 
  119.     images, and lots more. When we think we have a worthy 
  120.     follow up, we will release it and those who have 
  121.     already bought DTP ToolBox will be entitled to a 
  122.     discount on the new follow up that is yet to be 
  123.     finalised.

  125.     Updates (like new templates) on floppy disk will 
  126.     follow for this CD and will be available free to 
  127.     registered users.

  129.     Custom CDs
  130.     While speaking to many of you on the phone, some have 
  131.     asked if they can place their own files on the CD. 
  132.     The answer to this is yes. However, as you already 
  133.     have the CD, its a bit late for this but we can offer 
  134.     you the option of doing custom CDs just for you. 
  135.     Details on this will vary but the idea is to give you 
  136.     the same option we give ourselves. That is, to 
  137.     collect all the often used files and programs and 
  138.     stick them on CD.
  139.  
  140.     There are many ways we can do this and because of 
  141.     this, the cost of such a job will vary depending on 
  142.     how much work is required. If you are interested in 
  143.     this, give us a call and we'll talk it over. The 
  144.     simplest option for us to have from you a hard drive 
  145.     with the files laid out the way you want and we'll 
  146.     just make an ISO file from this.

  148.     Other options are to give us a PD disk for the 
  149.     Panasonic PD system and we can make an ISO image from 
  150.     that. Or you can send your Amiga to us and we'll 
  151.     Parnet the two and copy files from a hard drive to 
  152.     our spare and make an ISO from this.

  155.     What we wouldn't entertain (except for a large fee) 
  156.     is to have 500 floppy disks to place on CD. Because 
  157.     the Zip drives are popular, we may be looking at 
  158.     utilising these as a format for transferring files to 
  159.     and from readers machines.

  161.     There's more to CD though than just using it as a 
  162.     storage medium. Maybe you have a pet project that you 
  163.     want on CD, well we can help. As you can see from 
  164.     this CD, it is possible to create low run Gold CDs 
  165.     that look the business and work just like silver

  169.     Usage:
  170.     What follows is a few notes on using the CD. This is 
  171.     by no means comprehensive but is intended as a way of 
  172.     helping you get more from it. For example, take some 
  173.     HTML files we have on the CD in the TextFiles drawer. 
  174.     These can found buried a few draws down in a drawer 
  175.     called AmigaFAQ. These HTML files can be viewed by 
  176.     using a utility called AWeb which is in the WEB 
  177.     drawer, a sub directory of the Text drawer in 
  178.     Utilities.

  181.     CONTENTS
  182.     ARCHIVES: In here are some compressed files in case 
  183.     you want to install the programs on your hard drive. 
  184.     Includes ProPage, Don's Genies and ImageStudio.

  187.     C Drawer: Necessary system files for the CD
  188.  
  189.     EMC_CD_Indexes: In here are all the indexes for the 
  190.     images and clip art on Phase 1, 2 and 3. Use them to 
  191.     find the image you want before inserting each of the 
  192.     CDs into your CD drive or just have a gander if 
  193.     you're looking at buy one or all of these CDs and 
  194.     just want to see what you are buying.

  196.     Em Magazine: Advert for Em. Files from the magazine 
  197.     EM for those who have not yet had the pleasure...
  198.  
  199.     Fonts: This drawer contains more than 1800 fonts. 
  200.     1,000 and more PostScript ones and 800+ Compugraphic 
  201.     fonts. These are arranged in Alphabetical order just 
  202.     like they are in the book, EMC.INFO published by LH 
  203.     Publishing.

  205.     Goodies: In here are files for various word 
  206.     processors, dtp programs and graphics packages. They 
  207.     include the Wordworth Enhancer, PageStream Enhancer, 
  208.     ARexx macros for Final Writer, Wordworth and others 
  209.     as well as Post. You will also find all the 
  210.     PageStream updates up to 3.0i! Use a file manager to 
  211.     find your way round and install the relevant files 
  212.     for use with the programs.

  214.     Libs: In here are libraries that need to be copied to 
  215.     your Libs drawer. This is located in the Workbench 
  216.     partition of your hard drive. Use the file manager on 
  217.     the disk or your own file manager to copy the files 
  218.     over.

  220.     ProPage 4: Here is the full licensed version of 
  221.     ProPage 4.1. It includes the program plus templates, 
  222.     CGFonts, Don's Genies already installed, ProDraw and 
  223.     a graphics library of useful bits and pieces for your 
  224.     own DTP.

  226.     Text Files: In here are various text files you may 
  227.     find useful. They include reviews, Frequently Asked 
  228.     Questions (FAQs), Amiga Disk magazines and lots more.

  231.     Utilities: Lots and lots of utilities that I felt 
  232.     would be useful to many of you not only for DTP but 
  233.     other areas of using your Amiga. Many of them are 
  234.     shareware.

  237.     Wordworth
  238.     A demo version of Wordworth which has most of the
  239.     functions    in place. Try out the ARexx scripts,
  240.     especially the Calendar one. Plenty of fonts have
  241.     been installed for you to use as well as loads
  242.     of templates. Originally created for Amiga Format
  243.     but kindly given to us by Digita International so 
  244.     you can see how useful it is.
