- 7 Chandler Ave. ON THE SEVENTH DAY, TEX RESTED 0 1000
-
-
-
-
- ------------------------------------ Notes -----------------------------------
-
- 1 This sequence is very flexible -- it's possible to obtain the maximum points
- in several different ways. Only one way is outlined here, and this applies
- to many segments of the game. We know of at least one sequence which could
- deny a player points if incorrectly played. This sequence is detailed later.
-
- 2 Saving the game at the point directly after Franco says: "I will answer one
- question," and then restoring after choosing A or C will result in the
- addition of 6 'bogus' points to your score. This is apparently a bug in the
- scoring system. A final score of 1006 is now possible...
-
- 3 This point is available up until the statuette is obtained in Day 3. Perhaps
- the authors wanted to give it for humor value when Tex asks Mac about the
- mugging in Day 3, and Mac says, "Sorry, Tex...". Since the point's available
- in Day 2, let's take it.
-
- 4 This point is available only prior to talking to Louie about Sal and taking
- the note scraps from Louie's award-winning trashcan. Maybe it's just to
- remind us game players about Ardo's fascination with Inspector Burns.
-
- 5 If you choose 'EXIT' from the Regency password screen, an extra 10 points
- are erroneously awarded each time you do so. Hey, do it 100 times and you
- could score an extra 1,000 points!
-
- 6 Save your game immediately upon arriving at GRS. Saving your game often at
- GRS is recommended, due to the lethal security orb. Familiarity with the
- orb's movements may be helpful. When you first enter GRS, RUN (moving the
- mouse and holding down the 'R' key) down the front hallway to the left about
- halfway. Turn around and watch the orb enter the front hallway. It is now
- possible (and dangerous) to follow the orb as it makes its rounds in a
- figure-eight pattern through GRS. Be careful to stay low and near outside
- wall corners in order to watch the orb enter and leave each office. The orb
- search pattern begins anew each time you leave a GRS office. Since the orb
- first searches Tucker's office, planning and caution are required to safely
- enter Tucker's no matter which office you leave. Patience works best here.
-
- 7 Hiding from the security orb requires precision driving. Usually, setting
- the screen size to 4 and the resolution to F3 will allow you to drive
- quickly enough to your destination. To watch the orb as it makes its rounds
- inside an office, head into the proper corner, then use right-click to stop
- motion. Level your eyesight view by pressing 'TAB'. Lower yourself all the
- way to the floor using left Ctrl. Carefully rotate your view sliding the
- mouse only left or right, then right-click again to look over a desk, etc.
- In most cases, you can elevate yourself 2 or 3 left Shifts from the floor
- and still not get caught. In the Supervisor's office, you can elevate
- yourself until you're looking through the holes in the partition next to
- Eva's desk. Also, reducing screen size and lowering resolution really
- speeds up the motion of the orb while you're spying on it. Good luck!
-
- 8 If this action is the final one performed at GRS, an extra 'bogus' 10 points
- are awarded. OK, go ahead and score 1016!
-
- 9 Watching the 'viral rain' movie multiple times increases your score
- erroneously by 26 points per time. That final score of 1042 looks
- obtainable now!
-
- 10 In early versions of UKM, it's possible to walk outside the Virtual
- Room directly through the Emergency Door, as if the Door did not exist.
- Explorations beyond are informative, to say the least. Make liberal use
- of the keys 'ASQWZ' to look sideways, backwards etc. if you get lost.
-
- 11 This is one sequence that must be performed in order. Reversing the
- sequence denies 1 point.
-
-
-
- -------------------------------- Rules for a PI ------------------------------
-
- 1: Never, ever betray your friends.
- 2: Hide from people carrying guns.
- 3: Always ask the right question.
- 4: Don't get caught.
- 5: Know when to run away.
- 82: Don't get too close to a LaserNet security system.
-
- And, "Never underestimate a woman with an attitude!"
-
-
-
- --------------------------------- Playing Tips -------------------------------
-
- First, you'll need the proper hardware. A 386-33 with 4Mb and MPC-1
- compliance is just adequate for the task and may exhibit some shortcomings
- during game play, such as interrupted sound, chunky animation etc. The UKM
- manual has an entire section on new hardware selection -- this game is worth
- upgrading your system. If you have a 486/25 or better with 8Mb RAM or more,
- this game can be one of the finest you've played. If you have only 4Mb of
- memory, this game is an excellent reason (or excuse) to upgrade to 8 or 16Mb.
-
- 'Driving' yourself around the Virtual World of UKM is an acquired skill. Use
- of the 'hot' keys, especially the 1-0 window size keys and the F2-F4
- resolution selection keys is paramount to game enjoyment. While in movement
- mode, use numeric keys 1 through 0 to select different window sizes. Use the
- F2, F3 and F4 keys to select different resolutions. Use the F10-F12 keys to
- select walking speeds. You can always go back to the Config Screen (via the
- Control Panel) to check your current configuration. On a 486-DX2/66, the
- combination of size 6 (or 7) and resolution F3 can't be beat, but you'll have
- to experiment to find your own favorites. Notice that resolution key F3
- provides quick movement, with a final 'lock-in' of high resolution when
- movement stops. Use screen size key 0 for exploring new environments (fish-
- eye view).
-
- Remember, while in movement mode these hot keys act almost instantaneously,
- giving you a wide range of window sizes and resolutions at a keypress. On a
- 386-33, use of the proper 1-0 size keys and F2-F4 resolution keys will be the
- difference between a 'slow' game and an enjoyable game.
-
- Also, don't forget to move as close as you can to objects of interest. Even
- if you've only 4-8Mb of RAM, most framed artwork and other interesting objects
- are represented in hi-res. Check out the aquarium and all other art objects
- in Ching's apartment, and zoom in on the artwork (and magazines on the floor
- of) the Colonel's apartment to get the feel of what this game can do. When
- you find yourself trying to read the fine print on Playbub magazine and
- looking at the underside of an opened drawer, you're just about there.

- --------------------------------- Test Ratings -------------------------------
-
- NOTE: Description of the plot and characterization of the game is beyond the
- scope of this limited review, since a complete point list has been included.
-
-
- We at LabRats, Inc. have played/tested UKM for several hundred hours, and
- have found it to be a most technically advanced game. Access Software
- has produced, in our opinion, one of the finest adventure games to date.
-
- The packaging and game manual are first-rate. Most of the manual contents are
- included in the excellent on-line help system which is always available during
- game play. The manual includes several pages of information which explain the
- concepts of multimedia performance in a straitforward manner. Although this
- game needs all the performance a PC can provide, we found game play on a 486-25
- 8Mb to be adequate, and performance on a 486-66 16Mb with double-spin SCSI2
- CD-ROM is rated 'excellent.' Some testers are still fighting over the P90
- with midi after playing the game several times.
-
- Game installation is just about the finest we've ever seen. The install
- procedure is actually better than the user interface on some recent games
- we've played. Included are several hardware performance tests that provide
- players with important (and accurate) information about their PC platforms.
- On a few of our test machine configurations, the included boot disk maker
- considerably enhanced game performance. Only 8Mb of hard drive space is
- required for installation, including a very generous space for saved games.
- Since UKM uses a DOS extender, there is no worry with a Windows installation
- that changes system configurations or leaves unwanted files sprayed across the
- hard drive. Once game play is complete, just delete the \MOON game directory,
- and UKM is completely uninstalled.
-
- The game interface is quite advanced and intuitive -- a joy to use. The best
- features of most adventure games are here, and those features are elevated to
- new levels. We've not seen a finer game save/restore function, although death
- is rare in the first day or two of the game. Note that games may be saved and
- restored by player name so that several players per PC can play at an
- individual pace. The player is usually warned that something dangerous is
- about to happen, thus there is no excuse for not using the save game option.
- Even better, there are no 'dead-end' paths -- the game never locks a player
- out because some incorrect choice was made during earlier play. If one
- chooses to repeat a portion of the game, all 'cut-scenes' and audio clips can
- be instantly bypassed at the press of a mouse button or key, a feature we'd
- like to see in a lot of new games. And as players would expect from a 4 CD
- set, there are plenty of high-resolution movie scenes in the game. Window
- size and resolution selection are just a keypress away, enabling owners of
- slower platforms to tune performance vs. speed - on the fly - during game play
- and player movement.
-
- UKM offers the most exploration possible in any 3D adventure game to date.
- Other games have presented the 'virtual room' environment, but players could
- only move along pre-determined paths. Exploration beyond the paths planned
- by game designers was impossible, like an amusement park boat ride that's
- guided by an underwater cable. In UKM, there are no pre-planned routes. The
- player can move throughout the virtual environment unhindered. Crawling on
- the floor to look up underneath a desk or tiptoeing across a room to look down
- on a shelf are just examples of what this virtual environment allows. UKM is
- to previous 3D games (and all 2D games) as 2D games are to old text adventures.
- Until you've played this game, you can't imagine how versatile, imaginative and
- exciting it is.
-
- RECOMMENDATION: Even if you don't like futuristic adventures or detective
- stories, give this game a test spin. Once you learn to drive, you will find
- it's like owning a new Ferrari: you'll take it for a spin just because it's
- there and you can!
