- TROUBLE SHOOTING INFORMATION FOR MYST, WINDOWS/MPC VERSION
-
- Please review this document before contacting Br°derbund's Technical Support
- department if you
- experience any problems running Myst for Windows/MPC. The information
- contained in this guide will help to resolve most common problems, and will
- assist you in collecting information essential to our Technical Support
- Representatives, should you need to contact them. These are the latest known
- issues and possible solutions to assist you in having the program up and
- running soon.
-
- GENERAL TIPS
-
- Make sure that you are using the most current drivers available for your
- video card, sound card, CD-ROM driver and Microsoft/DOS utility MSCDEX.EXE
- (current version is 2.23 included with DOS 6.2). This is essential in
- running this program effectively. Please note that drivers are often updated
- every few months. At this time, there is a 95% success rate on running the
- program successfully after ensuring all drivers have been updated. Please
- check your autoexec.bat file to make sure that C:\DOS is in the line that
- begins PATH so that MSCDEX.EXE 2.23 is being recognized and MSCDEX.EXE is
- loaded from the DOS subdirectory.
-
- Make sure that you do not have any other Windows applications running in
- Windows. Open up your task list by pressing the Ctrl and Esc keys and close
- everything except for Program Manager before running MYST.
-
- Rem out the LOAD= and RUN= line in the WIN.INI file.
-
- Make sure that you clean your CD with a lint-free cloth to keep dirt and
- smudges which could cause the disk to malfunction off the CD.
-
- Known issues and their solutions
-
- Accelerated Video Cards
- There is a known problem at this time between the Video 7/Headland Video Card
- (manufactured by AHEAD!) and Apple's Quicktime for Windows engine. Due to
- the design and video sophistication of the program, MYST MPC requires
- Quicktime in order to run effectively. MYST is set up so that it could
- accept a patch for Quicktime if or when it becomes available. Symptoms of a
- problem with this video card are as follows:
- Unable to see the full animation of the Quicktime movies
- Split video
- Animation half way off screen
-
- If you have experienced any or all of the above symptoms, try the following
- to correct the problem. From the Program Manager, select RUN from the FILE
- menu. Type QTW.INI in the COMMAND LINE and click on OK. Look for a section
- titled [VIDEO]. If such a section does not exist, please add it using the
- instructions below. Please note that the [VIDEO] section needs to be the
- first section of the file, and it should appear as follows:
-
- [QUICKTIME FOR WINDOWS]
- OPTIMIZE=DRIVER
-
- From the FILE menu select SAVE and then select EXIT. You must restart
- Windows at this point. Select EXIT Windows from the Program Manager FILE
- menu. At the DOS prompt type WIN and press the ENTER key to restart Windows.
-
-
- A few others have found success in selecting the Video 7 video driver for
- resolution 640x480x256. If the above information does not work for you, we
- must unfortunately suggest that you return the software to the dealer from
- where it was purchased until Apple and/or Headland/Video 7 provide an update.
-
-
- MATROX AND ATI ACCELERATED VIDEO CARDS
- Some users accelerated graphics cards have also experienced problems running
- Myst. If by adding the OPTIMIZE=DRIVER line did not help, you can correct
- problems with these cards by creating a QTW.INI file that contains the
- following lines only:
- [QUICKTIME FOR WINDOWS]
- OPTIMIZE=BMP
-
- This file needs to be in the C:\WINDOWS directory. Restart Windows for the
- new QTW.INI file to be recognized.
-
- For the ATI Mach 64, make sure that WINSWITCH is disabled, and that the
- DEVICEBITMAP=OFF line has been added to your SYSTEM.INI file in the [MACHX]
- section.
-
- MISTUMI AND PHILLIPS CD-ROM DRIVES
- Users of these CD-ROM drives should update to the current version of Myst,
- version 1.01. This newer version of the software has greatly enhanced
- compatibility with these CD-ROM drives.
-
- SOUND BLASTER 16 DRIVERS FROM THE MYST DISK
- If you own the Creative Labs SoundBlaster 16 (SB16) sound card when you play
- Myst you will notice the sound is clipped. The SoundBlaster 16 Windows sound
- drivers on your system must be updated for Myst to work properly. With the
- cooperation of Creative Labs we have included updated drivers for the SB16
- on the Myst CD. If you are not sure if you have a SB16 do not install the
- driver files. To check if you have a SB16 sound card at the DOS prompt type
- "DIR C:\*. /W" and press the enter key. If you have a SB16 sound card you
- will see "[SB16]" in the list of files on your screen. If you do not see
- "[SB16]" in the list of files we recommend checking with the store you
- purchased your hardware from.
-
- ENSONIQ SOUND CARD
- In order to have the Ensoniq sound card work correctly with Myst, select the
- drivers icon in the Control Panel of the Main Group in your Program Manager.
- You should see the following two Soundscape
- drivers listed:
- Soundscape DVD AD-1848 Wave, AUX Mixer
- Soundscape DVD MIDI, Wave, AUX
-
- Click on the second one to highlight it, and then click on Setup. Find the
- section labeled wave playback DMA, Wave A & Wave B. By default, both of
- these should be disabled. You will want to choose a DMA other than the one
- used for the Primary DMA. The primary DMA defaults to 1. Therefore, you
- should set Wave A to 0 and Wave B to 3. Click on OK & close all windows, and
- then restart Windows. Now you
- should be able to access Myst and have full sound.
-
- ERROR 10200 INITIALIZING TIMER MANAGER
- This error message happens during installation. This error message results
- from a problem with Windows. This is a known issue by Microsoft and may
- require Windows that be reinstalled in order to run successfully.
-
- However, you may be able to remedy this by resetting your Timer. To do this
- go into the Driver icon in the Control Panel and select Timer. Now, select
- Add, and choose Current. NOTE: You may need to restart Windows. This has
- resolved this problem for some customers.
-
- If you have OS/2 or WIN-OS/2 and you receive this error, you will need to add
- and/or update the following lines to your SYSTEM.INI file:
-
- [DRIVERS]
- TIMER286MAXRES=20
- TIMER386MAXRES=30
-
- This has helped some OS/2 or WIN-OS/2 customers overcome this difficulty.
-
- ERROR 10315 INITIALIZING FILE MANAGER
- This occurs on systems with two separate hard disks and both having the same
- DOS volume label. Please make sure that all of your hard disk drives have
- unique DOS volume labels. There are two methods for checking and changing
- the volume label of a hard disk.
-
- From the DOS prompt, type CD\ [hit enter]. To now check the volume label
- of a disk & type VOL [hit enter]. The volume label will appear on the
- screen.
-
- To change the volume label, type LABEL [hit enter]. You may use any name
- you would like as long as the name does not exceed 11 characters in length.
- The following characters CAN NOT be used in a volume label. * ? \ / . , : ;
- + = [ ] ( ) ^ &
-
- SHADOW OR KRNL386.EXE ERROR
- This error occurs during installation. The error seems to have various
- different wordings. Please review the Myst Readme file on the Myst CD which
- states that the problem is in the drivers for the CORELSCSI! driver. You
- must contact Corel to obtain an updated driver. Please note that the latest
- updated driver (CorelSCSI driver version 2.0) requires an additional patch
- file to be complete. The patch can be downloaded from their BBS. It is
- called 20CDFIX.EXE. This file is compressed and password protected. CorelSCSI
- will have to provide a password before the customer can extract the file.
-
- Files you should download:
- 20CDFIX.EXE and HELP!.TXT, explanation of how to extract a password protected
- file.
-
- Their Technical Support hours are 8:30 to 5:00 Eastern time.
- BBS: 613/728-4752
- 613/761-7798
- Voice: 613/728-1010
- Fax : 613/761-8051
-
- Note: If you are sure you have the updated version as well as the patch, you
- may want to try the solution for the following GPF in module KRNL.EXE below.
-
- APPLICATION HAS CAUSED A GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT IN MODULE KRNL.EXE
- OR YOU ARE BEING EXITED OUT OF MYST TO THE DOS PROMPT
-
- To correct this problem, you will need to edit your CONFIG.SYS and
- AUTOEXEC.BAT files and deactivate any lines which contain the SMARTDRV.EXE
- program, and then restart your system. We recommend using the DOS Utility
- EDIT or the Windows utility SYSEDIT to make these changes.
- Please refer to your DOS manual for further help with the EDIT Utility.
-
- You may want to consider removing the /E parameter in the line in your
- autoexec.bat that loads MSCDEX.EXE (if such a parameter currently exists).
- The /E parameter instructs MSCDEX.EXE to load a portion of the MSCDEX.EXE
- memory buffers in to expanded memory if it is available.
-
- EMM386 HAS DETECTED A #06 ERROR
- If you are receiving this error, it means that either your sound or video
- driver is not the most recent version or it is corrupted. We recommend that
- you contact the maker of your cards and obtain the updated drivers from them.
-
- FATAL ERROR AT SCRIPT LINE 0
- This was also related to the CorelSCSI driver being out of date. Please
- refer to the above solution and contact Corel for an updated driver and be
- sure to download the patch which corrects this problem.
-
- FATAL ERROR AT SCRIPT LINE 166
- This error results from not having your keyboard set to English (American).
- To correct this, go to the International icon in your Windows Control Panel
- located in your Main Group. There you can change the keyboard setting to
- English (American), and you should not have any further problems. However,
- if you do not have an English version of MS DOS, you may need to switch to
- one if changing the keyboard settings does not work.
-
- FATAL ERROR AT SCRIPT LINE 505
- This error is caused when a conflict occurs during the installation of the
- Myst group and ions. If this occurs, you will need to manually create the
- icons for Myst (MYST.EXE) and the Making of Myst
- (MAKING.EXE). To create the icons for these files highlight the group you
- would like the icons to appear in, go to the FILE menu, and choose NEW &
- Program Item. You will then need to add the following lines:
-
- Description: Myst
- Command Line: D:\MYST.EXE
- Working Directory: D:\
- Shortcut key: none
-
- You will then need to use the BROWSE command to access the correct icon for
- this program, and select OK.
-
- DIVIDE BY 0
- If you are receiving a Divide by 0 error message, you will need to add and/or
- update your QTW.INI file as follows:
-
- [VIDEO]
- OPTIMIZE=BMP
-
- SMARTENERGY SYSTEM ON THE IBM PS/1
- You need to make sure that the EPMBIOS is disabled. Myst does not run
- correctly with your SmartEnergy system operating.
-
- MAXIMUM COLOR DEPTH
- Myst currently works with thousands of colors and 256 color video drivers.
- It will not work with a video driver that supports millions of colors.
-
- SWAP FILE INFORMATION
- For maximum performance in the Myst MPC program, please make sure that your
- Windows Swap File is no larger than 2 times that of your RAM. For example:
- If you have 4 megs of RAM, your Swap File should be no larger than 8,000 K.
- Also, we recommend using a Permanent Swap File rather than a Temporary Swap
- File.
-
- If while using Myst, your system seems to be accessing the hard disk
- frequently, reduce the size of your permanent Swap File. On certain systems
- with 4 Megs of RAM, we have found that the permanent Swap File can not be
- larger than 4500K.
-
- DEFRAG & CHKDSK
- You may need to use the DEFRAG & CHKDSK commands to "clean up" your hard
- drive so that you will have more memory and resources available to run Myst.
- Please refer to your DOS manual on how to perform these functions.
-
- MYST MPC, MICRONIX, AND ACCELERATED VIDEO CARDS
- After extensive testing from our firm and various other hardware companies,
- we have determined that there is a conflict with Myst on the Micronix
- motherboard when it is used with any Accelerated Video card. This problem
- has not occurred when using Myst and those cards and drivers with any other
- motherboard.
-
- Regretfully, we have to recommend that if you have a Micronix motherboard and
- an Accelerated Video Card, that you return the program to your retailer. If
- you are unable to return the program for credit or exchange, please contact
- us again and we will send you information detailing how to return the program
- directly to us.
-
- We apologize for any inconvenience that this may have caused and we will
- continue to work with the involved firms to find a remedy for this situation.
-
- IMPORTANT NOTE
- If you do not see your error message listed in this document, please do not
- disregard the need to update your drivers. This is essential in running the
- program effectively. Do not assume that your new computer has the latest
- drivers previously installed or the bulletin board you may have downloaded
- your driver from has the current version available. We suggest contacting
- the manufacturers of the CD-ROM, Sound and Video Cards to ensure that you
- have the most current version AND to verify if the hardware you own is
- Quicktime for Windows compatible. As we have come to find, not all cards and
- drivers presently have this compatibility.
-
-
- OPTIMAL OPERATING ENVIRONMENT IN MYST MPC
- An environment can be created that will eliminate all possible conflicts and
- ensure that Myst is running in a "perfect environment". Often when a program
- made for Windows is installed, changes are made to the WIN.INI or System.INI
- files. These changes can effect the running of a program such as Myst. So
- therefore, this "bare bones" version of Windows may be a necessary step to
- isolating your problem. This will take approximately 15-20 MGs of hard disk
- space, but it will only be a temporary directory for trouble shooting
- purposes.
-
- First copy your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to a boot disk (a boot disk
- is created by placing a blank formatted floppy disk in drive A:, and typing
- SYS A:). Boot your computer with this disk in the A drive. Modify the
- Config.sys and Autoexec.bat. files on this disk only. There should be two
- lines in each file.
-
- Modify the Config.sys file to read:
- Device=C:\WINMYST\himem.sys
- Device=(whatever your driver information is for your CD-ROM)
-
- Modify the Autoexec.bat file to read
- MSCDEX (whatever your driver information is for your CD-ROM)
- Path=C:\WINMYST;C:\DOS
-
- Note: If you use a compressed drive that requires special drivers to
- recognize the disk drive you will need to include the driver lines in you
- system files on the Bootable floppy, see your documentation for the
- compression software for further instructions. If you do not use Disk
- compression or if you use the latest versions of either Stacker or Double
- Space please disregard this information.
-
- The above example assumes that you will install Windows into a directory
- called WINMYST in the steps below. If you use a different directory name
- please modify the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files accordingly.
-
- Now install a second copy of Windows 3.1 into a separate subdirectory. The
- custom installation will allow you to only load the bare minimum. You may
- want to call it something like WINMYST. Whatever you call it, it must be in
- the Path= statement in the Autoexec.bat and in the Device=C:\(Directory
- name)\himem.sys line in the Config.sys file. See above example.
-
- Next load the latest versions of all video and sound drivers into this copy
- of Windows, following the manufacturer's directions.
-
- Change directory (CD\WINMYST <enter>) and type WIN to begin Windows. Note:
- When you boot from this floppy you will be left on the A: drive. Type C:
- <enter> to get to your C: drive.
-
- MYST UPDATE
- If Myst does not run in this environment, it may be incompatible with your
- system and you may need to update the disk. We have just released a version
- 1.0.1 copy on May 11th. The way to determine which version of Myst you have
- is by looking at the serial number on the inner rim of the CD. If the number
- is 44547, you have version 1.0. If it is 44962, you have the 1.01 version.
