- 10 out of 10 DRIVING TEST ... MANUAL (Demo version)
- ---------------------------------------------------
-
- INTRODUCTION
- ------------
-
- 10 out of 10 Driving Test consists of six games plus a unique test
- designed so that you can have fun as you learn, revise or test your
- knowledge on many of the essential facts of driving and road signs. You
- can choose the specific area(s) that you wish to work on and progress at
- your own speed - your progress is automatically recorded as you play the
- games.
-
- To add to your fun you can even choose one of the six categories of
- trivia questions, or test your skills on the continental levels. If you
- want to quiz yourself on the 1000's of questions in the suite, but
- without the games, that too is possible - details are in this guide.
-
- The games are both educational and fun, with many elements built in to
- make this the most enjoyable way to check up on many of the theoretical
- parts of driving. There are, for example, two ways that you see
- progress:
-
- * The Achievement Record: Your aim is to turn this completely green by
- gaining full marks at the various levels.
- * The High Score Tables: In addition to your mark, these take into
- account many other game elements like speed and bonus points.
-
- The Achievement Record shows you, at a glance, how you are progressing
- and you can see which topics need further practice. Once you've reached
- a high enough standard you can Take the Test - pass and fail
- certificates are issued!
-
-
- GETTING STARTED
- ---------------
-
- When you first load 10 out of 10 you'll see the Main Menu. To make a
- selection move the mouse pointer to the appropriate option, which will
- highlight, and click on it. At the bottom is the player's name - you'll
- see it is set to None to begin with. The first thing you should do is
- enter your own name by using the New Player option. Type in your name,
- press Enter to return to the Main Menu - your name will now be displayed
- at the bottom.
-
- The top six choices on the Main Menu are the games themselves. Only
- Patience! and Signpost are available on the demo and when you choose one
- of them from the Main Menu you are presented with a Game Menu. Before
- clicking on the top option of this menu (play game), look at the other
- options that allow you to customise the game to your own needs and
- skills.
-
- To change one of the options move the mouse pointer to it and click to
- cycle through the various possibilities. The options are set so that you
- can start playing and enjoying the games straight away. However, for the
- most fun, they need changing to suit your own preferences (which your
- computer remembers for you ready for next time on the full version).
-
- Here are the remaining options that you'll find on the Main Menu:
-
- Player Information
- ------------------
-
- You choose this when you want to find out how well you are doing or to
- select the category or categories that you want to be quizzed on. Your
- Achievement Record will be shown - you should try to turn it all green
- by playing the games with all categories except j and k selected. The
- categories are selected or de-selected by moving your mouse pointer over
- the list at the foot of the screen and clicking on them. Return to the
- Main Menu by clicking anywhere else.
-
- To start with, the boxes on the chart are all grey and they each change
- colour and have letters put in them when you play and score in the
- games. The letters show the categories with which your rating was
- achieved. The colour each box turns to depends on how many questions you
- get right and not on your score - that depends how well you play the
- games too! Note that you will only be assessed if you have answered 10
- or more questions. Here is what the colours mean:
-
- * Grey: If no letter is shown in a box you have not answered 10
- questions at that level. However if letters are shown you achieved 0%
- on those categories - you know nothing about driving!
-
- * Red: You have played the game but achieved under 50%. Take the red
- as a warning, your driving knowledge is very limited.
-
- * Yellow: You have scored 50% or more so probably know the facts but
- need to practise them more.
-
- * Green: You know the facts and have proved it with 100% - the 10 out
- of 10 goal.
-
- * Blue: For the real experts, score 100% with ALL categories selected
- and turn the table blue.
-
- Note: If you play a game at a particular level, with the same categories
- selected as last time, only your better ratings are recorded. However,
- if you change the categories, your previous rating will be replaced by
- the new one regardless of whether your performance is better or poorer
- (for example green adf can turn to red afg). The full version allows you
- to print your Achievement Record either as graphic or text file.
-
- Change Player
- -------------
-
- Not available in the demo (the full version allows up to 64 players per
- file).
-
- New Player

- before you can play the games.

-
- THE LEVELS
- -----------
-
- In the full version all the games have six built-in levels (shown below)
- which reflect the difficulty of the questions. On the demo only a
- sub-set of the Level 4 questions has been provided.
-
- 1 Motoring General Knowledge
- 2 Beginners' Driving
- 3 Intermediate Driving
- 4 Test Standard
- 5 Experienced Motorists
- 6 Specialised and Advanced Knowledge
-
- There are a few exceptions to this:
-
- General
- -------
-
- As there is only about one eighth of the full set of questions in the
- demo version, there may be insufficient questions for a few combinations
- of categories that you may select. In the unlikely event of this
- happening you will be asked to select more categories.
-
- Trivia
- ------
-
- Levels 1 to 6 represent:
-
- 1 General Motoring
- 2 Motoring History
- 3 Motoring Abbreviations
- 4 Motoring Statistics (only this category is in the demo)
- 5 Motor Racing
- 6 Motor Mechanics
-
- Continental
- -----------
-
- Levels 1 to 6 represent:
-
- 1 France
- 2 Germany
- 3 Portugal, Spain
- 4 Italy (only this category is in the demo)
- 5 Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Ireland,
- Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden,
- Switzerland
- 6 Baltic States, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Gibraltar, Greece,
- Romania, Slovenia, Turkey
-
- Note: These levels only apply if either Trivia or Continental alone is
- your selected category. Once two or more categories are selected,
- general Trivia or Continental questions are used.
-
-
- THE SCORING SYSTEMS
- -------------------
-
- All 10 out of 10 Educational Systems' programs have two scoring methods
- - the Achievement Record and the High Score Tables. You should try to
- progress in both these areas.
-
- The Achievement Record depends only on the number of questions you
- answer correctly (your mark). Factors like how fast the questions are
- answered are not taken into account.
-
- While taking into account your mark, your score is also influenced by
- other facts like the level it was achieved on, your speed of answering,
- bonuses and so on. To rise up a High Score Table you have to become
- proficient with the academic challenges in the package and also apply
- knowledge with accuracy and speed.
-
- The game element built into 10 out of 10 makes you want to keep
- practising until this proficiency is reached. As you play the games the
- on-screen display helps you monitor your progress. Along with your name
- and the level, a pair of numbers in the form 06 of 20 is shown. This
- means that you have chosen to answer 20 questions and you are on the
- sixth. The number of questions you have answered correctly is shown by
- the number of Marks - you get one mark for each correct answer.
-
- The final two numbers are your Score and your Bonus. As any question is
- displayed you will be given time to read it before your bonus starts to
- count down. The bonus starts at 25 and is reset every time you answer a
- question correctly.
-
-
- FILES
- -----
-
- In the full version all players' names, achievements, game settings and
- the high score tables are saved to disk.
-
-
- PASSCODE PROTECTION
- -------------------
-
- In the full version, to prevent anyone from altering any of the stored
- information, access to Change Player, New Player and Remove Player can
- be restricted by the use of an access code.
-
-
- THE GAMES
- ---------
-
- In all the games you must answer questions on your selected category or
- categories correctly before you can make another move. If you only want
- to answer questions, a feature is built into Rear Mirror to allow this
- (full version only).
-
- The choices that are common to all the games are:
-
- Play Game
- ---------
-
- Choose this to play the game once you have set all the other features.
-
- High Score Table
- ----------------
-
- This lets you view the high score table. All your scores are shown in
- yellow and a new one is displayed in blue. Higher scores can be obtained
- by playing the games with options set to the more difficult
- alternatives.
-
- Number of Questions
- -------------------
-
- Make sure you have enough questions to complete the challenge. The
- number of questions you select and the way you play the game will
- determine your score. In all games (except Patience!) you can have from
- 20 to 50 questions in steps of 5. In Patience! you can have from 24 to
- 50 in steps of 2.
-
- Level
- -----
-
- When you first start, this is set to Level 1. You can choose your own
- preferred level and the next time you load the game, the level will
- automatically set to your last chosen value. In the demo version, only
- Level 4 is available.
-
- Volume
- ------
-
- Lets you turn sound effects on or off.
-
-
- Player Information
- ------------------
-
- This displays a small version of your Achievement Record, just giving
- details for that particular game.
-
- Exit to Main Menu
- -----------------
-
- This takes you back to the Main Menu.
-
-
- Here are the rules of the games. There are also details of the numerous
- options that youæll find to allow you to customise the games to your own
- preferences:
-
-
- WORD PARK (Full version only)
- -----------------------------
-
- This is a game of word power where answering questions will reveal
- letters which allows you to guess the hidden word. Every time you answer
- a question correctly you can uncover another square in the grid.
-
- Words can be chosen from: motoring terms, cars and bikes, car parts or
- motor sport. Choose ordered letters, or make the game more difficult by
- selecting jumbled (you solve the anagram), hidden character (decide what
- letter the ? covers) or bogus letter (spot and ignore the red herring).
-
-
- CLUNK CLICK (Full version only)
- -------------------------------
-
- This old favourite memory game will keep you on your toes as you match
- the road signs to their meanings. After answering a question correctly
- you will be given the chance to uncover two cards.
-
- You must try to uncover pairs of cards that match - description to
- picture. You can choose between warnings signs, orders, others and
- continental. Other features include automatic matching (you decide
- whether any description and picture uncovered match), mobile cards (any
- covered cards will occasionally change places to add to your challenge),
- split deal (all picture cards will be dealt to the bottom half of the
- screen) and a viewing time to allow you to see the initial position of
- all the cards at the start of the game.
-
-
- PATIENCE!
- ---------
-
- Answer the question to turn a card. This is a new twist to the classic
- card game which will check your powers of observation.
-
- Rules
- -----
-
- Your aim is to collect the four suits into ascending stacks, starting
- from the aces, at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. Valid
- cards can be moved onto the appropriate stack of a matching suit and
- once a card is placed on one of the stacks it cannot be moved.
-
- In the other piles of cards, any exposed card can be moved (along with
- any cards below it) when it can be placed on a card of the opposite
- colour with a value which is one pip higher. If, by doing this, you are
- left with a card that is face down it can be turned over by clicking on
- it. Only kings can be moved to vacant columns.
-
- To reveal the top card of the pile at the bottom left of the screen you
- must click on it, but you will have to answer a question correctly
- before it is uncovered. If it is suitable it can be placed under one of
- the exposed cards or on a stack, but if the card cannot be used it will
- remain in the pile of viewed cards. When all the cards have been
- revealed, clicking on the empty pile lets you run through them
- again.
-
- Once you have answered 24 questions correctly you can keep going through
- the pack until the game is over without answering any more questions.
- Thereafter, if you cannot complete the game, press Escape if you want to
- give up and discover how well you performed.
-
- Options
- -------
-
- Select your preferences from the Game Menu:
-
- Number of Questions
- -------------------
-
- The default here is 24 questions. Note that if you opt for 24 questions
- you must get them all correct to finish the game! Increasing the number
- of questions increases your margin for error and this is reflected by a
- lower score per correct answer.
-
-
- REAR MIRROR (Full version only)
- -------------------------------
-
- Gamble your bonus and go for more as your mental agility is really put
- to the test in this unique game.
-
- Each time you answer three questions correctly you can have a go at
- playing Rear Mirror. Memorise the sequence of numbers that you see
- appearing in the mirror and then enter them in the correct order. Other
- options include setting the length of time that each number is displayed
- in the mirror, how many numbers you will have to remember, the length of
- each number and whether the number is reflected. You can also select
- BROKEN if you want to answer questions without playing the game.
-
-
- SIGNPOST
- --------
-
- Reflexes and recognition are put to the test as you discover the hidden
- signs in the shortest number of tries.
-
- Rules
- -----
-
- Every time you answer a question correctly, you can uncover another
- square in the grid. Do this by clicking your mouse when the moving
- pointers are in line with the square you wish to reveal.
-
- If you think you know the sign, choose your guess from the list
- displayed, otherwise click on the Next Question box. To scroll through
- the list click on the up and down arrows located to the right of the
- window. The single arrow scrolls the window a line at a time, while the
- double arrows scroll the whole window.
-
- When you have answered the selected number of questions, if part of the
- latest sign is uncovered or you have answered the last question
- correctly, the sign will be revealed and you will be given a final
- chance to try to name it.
-
- Options
- -------
-
- Select your preferences from the Game Menu:
-
- Road Sign Group
- ---------------
-
- Select between GB (for British signs) and GB plus Continental (for a
- selection). Both groups are available on the demo version, but the
- number of signposts in each has been reduced.
-
- Pointer speed
- -------------
-
- Determines the speed of the pointers. Higher speeds make selecting a
- chosen square more difficult and so give you the chance of a higher
- score.
-
- Grid Size
- ---------
-
- Determines the number of squares into which the sign is divided. Select
- from 4 by 4, 6 by 6 or 8 by 8. The more squares that you select on the
- grid, the higher the possible maximum score.
-
- Sign Orientation
- ----------------
- Select between normal and upside down. Have fun recognising the upside
- down signs while at the same time aiming for higher scores.
-
-
- SPEED TRAP (full version only)
- ------------------------------
-
- How fast can you answer the questions? Accuracy and speed are the key
- elements in this exciting race to the line.
-
- Four cars are racing towards the finish line. Your aim is to answer all
- the questions before they reach it. Slow their progress by answering
- questions correctly - every right answer gives you the chance to move
- one of the cars back a distance that is proportional to the remaining
- bonus.
-
-
- TAKE TEST (full version only)
- -----------------------------
-
- If you're up to it you can take the test and print a certificate (pass
- or fail). The categories of the The 10 out of 10 Driving Test are:

- version) or Signpost.
-
- * To add to your fun and interest, some bogus signs have been included
- in the package - watch out for them!
-
- * Read the question and answers carefully before making your choice.
-
- * Unless otherwise stated, all questions refer to British motoring.
