- Description
- -----------
-
- Advanced Disk Catalog (ADC) is an easy to use tool with
- explorer-like interface which allows you to catalog the drives:
- floppy disks, hard drives (including network ones), optical
- disks, CD-ROMs, ZIP disks and other media.
-
- With ADC you are able to:
-
- - Organize volumes, folders and files into categories;
- - Add comment to each file, folder and disk;
- - Analyse ZIP, ARJ, RAR and CAB archives;
- - Search for files/folders using file name or your own
- comments (with wildcards), limiting the search
- results by date, size and category;
- - Search for files in archives;
- - Update volume information (with saving comments and
- categories);
- - Generate the reports which can be imported from the
- programs like Microsoft Excel;
- - Search for duplicated files;
- - Import descriptions from files like "file_id.diz",
- "files.bbs", "descript.ion" etc.;
- - Extract description from executable modules (EXE,
- DLL etc.);
- - Compare catalogued disk with actual
- (new files, changed files, modified files);
- - ... and more.
-
- ADC written totally in C++, doesn't use any database engines and
- so very fast. The database generated by ADC is very compact.
-
-
- Installation
- ------------
-
- Important! If you've got ADC not from our web page, but from
- the other source (magazine CD or some software library), please
- visit our home page - you'll probably find the later version;
- usually, we release the updates about once a month.
-
- We recommend you to uninstall the previous version of ADC (if
- you have one) from your computer before installing this one. You
- can do this via "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel applet. If
- you'll get the notification that the ADC folder is not empty, be
- careful when removing it: it may contain the .cat files (the
- databases created by ADC) you may wish to keep.
-
- To install ADC, just run the "setup.exe" and follow the
- instructions. You'll need to select the target directory
- and the components to install.
-
- Note: the Advanced Disk Catalog may not run correctly if the new
- version of common control library (comctl32.dll) is not
- installed; the program requires version 4.70 or later (version
- 4.72 is recommended). This new version is already available in
- Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 and Windows NT 4.0; you may also
- have it if you're using Internel Explorer 3.x or later. The
- installation program of the Advanced Disk Catalog checks what
- version do you have, and it'll ask you to update this file if
- it is old. If it will happen, just run the "40Comupd.exe" to
- update your system; reboot the computer and start the setup
- program again. For your convenience, we're distributing
- "40comupd.exe" together with the Advanced Disk Catalog setup
- files.
-
- Also, please take into account, that this version of ADC, if
- unregistered, cannot work with databases which contain more than
- five disks (in the previous releases, there was a limitation on
- the total size of files in the database -- 2Gb). If you've
- created such database in version prior to 1.20, you'll still be
- able to load it, but your changes could not be saved. As a
- workaround (if you're still evaluating the previous version),
- you can start the old version of ADC and split your database
- into a few parts, each with 5 disks or less. Sorry for
- inconvenience.

- Technical support
- -----------------
-
- Before you contact us, please do the following:
-
- - Be sure that you're doing everything right. We all make
- mistakes sometimes... Be attentive.
- - Look at the Help file: it may already contain an answer to
- your question. A lot of people ask us something like "how
- do I:", though the complete information is there.
- - Run the File Integrity Checker program (installed in Advanced
- Disk Catalog program group). It just verifies main ADC program
- files; if it shows "fail" or "file not found" for either
- adc.exe or validate.dll, it means that your installation is
- corrupted, or you may have a virus in your system. In this case,
- the program will not work properly - so, you'll have to run an
- antivirus program and/or reinstall ADC.
- - Visit ADC home page in the Internet at
- http://www.elcomsoft.com/adc.html. It's a good chance that you'll
- find the newer version of ADC there. If the serious bug has
- been found in the program, but the new version is not ready yet,
- we make the hot fix for it.
-
- But if you still have a problem with ADC and noting else helps,
- please contact Mr.Vladimir Katalov at:
