  60. Advanced Disk Catalog (ADC) is an easy to use tool with
  61. explorer-like interface which allows you to catalog the drives:
  62. floppy disks, hard drives (including network ones), optical
  63. disks, CD-ROMs, ZIP disks and other media.
  64.  
  65. With ADC you are able to:
  66.  
  67.     - Organize volumes, folders and files into categories;
  68.     - Add comment to each file, folder and disk;
  69.     - Analyse ZIP, ARJ, RAR and CAB archives;
  70.     - Search for files/folders using file name or your own
  71.           comments (with wildcards), limiting the search
  72.       results by date, size and category;
  73.     - Search for files in archives;
  74.     - Update volume information (with saving comments and
  75.       categories);
  76.     - Generate the reports which can be imported from the
  77.       programs like Microsoft Excel;
  78.     - Search for duplicated files;
  79.     - Import descriptions from files like "file_id.diz",
  80.       "files.bbs", "descript.ion" etc.;
  81.     - Extract description from executable modules (EXE,
  82.       DLL etc.);
  83.     - Compare catalogued disk with actual
  84.       (new files, changed files, modified files);
  85.     - ... and more.

  87. ADC written totally in C++, doesn't use any database engines and
  88. so very fast. The database generated by ADC is very compact.

  91. Installation
  92. ------------

  94. Important! If you've got ADC not from our web page, but from
  95. the other source (magazine CD or some software library), please
  96. visit our home page - you'll probably find the later version;
  97. usually, we release the updates about once a month.

  99. We recommend you to uninstall the previous version of ADC (if
  100. you have one) from your computer before installing this one. You
  101. can do this via "Add/Remove Programs" Control Panel applet. If
  102. you'll get the notification that the ADC folder is not empty, be
  103. careful when removing it: it may contain the .cat files (the
  104. databases created by ADC) you may wish to keep.
  105.  
  106. To install ADC, just run the "setup.exe" and follow the
  107. instructions. You'll need to select the target directory
  108. and the components to install.
  109.  
  110. Note: the Advanced Disk Catalog may not run correctly if the new
  111. version of common control library (comctl32.dll) is not
  112. installed; the program requires version 4.70 or later (version
  113. 4.72 is recommended). This new version is already available in
  114. Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 and Windows NT 4.0; you may also
  115. have it if you're using Internel Explorer 3.x or later. The
  116. installation program of the Advanced Disk Catalog checks what
  117. version do you have, and it'll ask you to update this file if
  118. it is old. If it will happen, just run the "40Comupd.exe" to
  119. update your system; reboot the computer and start the setup
  120. program again. For your convenience, we're distributing
  121. "40comupd.exe" together with the Advanced Disk Catalog setup
  122. files.

  124. Also, please take into account, that this version of ADC, if
  125. unregistered, cannot work with databases which contain more than
  126. five disks (in the previous releases, there was a limitation on
  127. the total size of files in the database -- 2Gb). If you've
  128. created such database in version prior to 1.20, you'll still be
  129. able to load it, but your changes could not be saved. As a
  130. workaround (if you're still evaluating the previous version),
  131. you can start the old version of ADC and split your database
  132. into a few parts, each with 5 disks or less. Sorry for
  133. inconvenience.

  156. Before you contact us, please do the following:
  157.  
  158. - Be sure that you're doing everything right. We all make
  159.   mistakes sometimes... Be attentive.
  160. - Look at the Help file: it may already contain an answer to
  161.   your question. A lot of people ask us something like "how
  162.   do I:", though the complete information is there.
  163. - Run the File Integrity Checker program (installed in Advanced
  164.   Disk Catalog program group). It just verifies main ADC program
  165.   files; if it shows "fail" or "file not found" for either
  166.   adc.exe or validate.dll, it means that your installation is
  167.   corrupted, or you may have a virus in your system. In this case,
  168.   the program will not work properly - so, you'll have to run an
  169.   antivirus program and/or reinstall ADC.
  170. - Visit ADC home page in the Internet at
  171.   http://www.elcomsoft.com/adc.html. It's a good chance that you'll
  172.   find the newer version of ADC there. If the serious bug has
  173.   been found in the program, but the new version is not ready yet,
  174.   we make the hot fix for it.
