- What is Outlaws?
-
- Outlaws combines first-person gun slinging action with stun-
- ning cinematic cutscenes, to create an exciting Wild West
- adventure. You are former Marshall James Anderson on a mission
- to retrieve your daughter, who has been kidnapped by an evil
- land baron. Drawn into a conflict that you never wanted, you
- will be forced to use your wits, as well as your trigger-
- finger to save your daughter.
-
- However, it won't be easy. Out to stop you are the single
- largest group of evil-doers, misanthropes, criminals, and flat-
- out bad guys to ever gather in the old west.
-
- The full version features:
-
- * Single or multiplayer gameplay over modem, Internet, LAN
- (Local Area Network) or serial connection.
-
- * Highly stylized characters with distinct personalities and
- weapons.
-
- * Original CD-Digital soundtrack and custom-designed sound
- effects.
-
- * 3D Sound emulated with hardware support to provide realistic
- sound environments.
-
- * Scaleable difficulty for novice to advanced.
-
- * Scaleable gameplay for low to high end machines.
-
- * Realistic 3D environments incorporating sloped surfaces and
- rooms-over-rooms.
-
- * Simulated "real-world" physics models on both land and in the
- water.
-
- * Translucent smoke and glass effects.
-
- * Gameplay involving puzzle solving to tease the mind, and
- exciting 1st person action-adventure.
-
-
- For the very latest updates and information on OUTLAWS, we
- highly recommend that you consult the Troubleshooting Guide
- (outlaws.doc) included with this demo. You can also check

- ------------------
- V) GAMEPLAY ISSUES
- ------------------
- a) Difficulty Settings
-
- Here is a little more information about the three level set-
- tings that are available:
-
- GOOD: The "Good" setting is designed with the first-time
- player in mind. The gameplay, power-ups and enemy
- placement, and damage multiplier are set to teach a new
- player how to maneuver, sight enemies and use power-up
- resources, without gratuitously punishing them for mak-
- ing blunders such as stepping into a room packed with
- enemies. The Good setting is intended to make the game
- enjoyable, but not particularly challenging.
-
- BAD: More often than not, the "Bad" setting will feature
- more enemies in any given area than those that would
- be encountered on the "Good" setting. Occasionally,
- these enemies will have heightened health, or different
- power-ups. Bad is intended to be more challenging, but
- still not extremely difficult.
-
- UGLY: "Ugly" is designed to be especially challenging. When
- the game is set to Ugly, you will only be able to
- endure one or two shots before you are killed.
- However, you will also be given increased accuracy when
- targeting enemies. The enemies, though quite deadly to
- you, will most often drop in one shot. Health and
- power-up items are difficult to find, but occasionally
- rewarding (i.e. more Elixirs than you would generally
- expect.)
-
- In general, Ugly is for the experienced player who
- enjoys the strategic elements of creeping around and
- staying hidden (someone who enjoys using their head, as
- well as their pistol!).
-
- ----------------------------------------
- VI) 3Dfx (GLIDE) 3D ACCELERATED GRAPHICS
- ----------------------------------------
- 3Dfx GLIDE DRIVER
- The 3Dfx Glide drivers are provided for your 3Dfx-based 3D
- card. Using this driver will give you hardware accelerated 3D
- graphics. If you choose to use this driver, you must have a
- 3Dfx Voodoo chipset on your 3D card, such as the Diamond Mon-
- ster 3D, the Orchid Righteous 3D, or the Hercules Stingray
- 128/3D cards. Using these drivers requires that you have the
- vendor's Glide drivers installed. Please consult the
- Troubleshooting Guide (Outlaws.doc) for more information about
- 3Dfx Glide support.
-
- To set up the 3Dfx Glide Driver:
- ╖ In your Outlaws Demo directory, double-click on OLCFG.EXE.
- ╖ Click on 3Dfx Glide under Display Driver if you are using
- Glide 2.1.1
- ╖ Click on 3Dfx Glide 2.3 if you are using Glide 2.3
- ╖ Click on one of the available video modes.
- ╖ Click OK to save the changes made.
- ╖ Double-click on OLDEMO.EXE to start the game.
-
- You may occasionally see objects corrupted or replaced by white
- boxes while using the Glide drivers. The normal display can be
- restored by hitting ESC and then clicking on "Resume".
-
- ---------------------------------------
- VII) ALTERNATE SOUND DRIVERS:
- MULTIMEDIA SOUND & AUREAL 3D SOUND
- ---------------------------------------
- MULTIMEDIA SOUND
- DirectSound is the primary sound driver for Outlaws, but if you
- are unable to get Outlaws working correctly because your audio
- drivers are not DirectX compatible, you can play Outlaws using
- the Multimedia Sound driver. The Multimedia Sound driver is a
- driver developed by LucasArts as an alternative to DirectSound.
-
- To select the Multimedia Sound driver:
- ╖ In your Outlaws Demo directory, double-click on OLCFG.EXE.
- ╖ Click on Sound Configuration (in the upper-right section)
- ╖ Click on Multimedia Sound under Sound Driver
- ╖ Click OK to save changes
- ╖ Double-click on OLDEMO.EXE to start the game
-
- AUREAL 3D SOUND
- This driver is used for hardware enhanced 3D positional audio.
- It can be used with cards with the Aureal sound chip, like the
- Diamond Monster Sound card.
-
- Setting Up the Diamond Monster Sound or Compatible Sound Card:
- ╖ In your Outlaws Demo directory, double-click on OLCFG.EXE
- ╖ Click on Sound Configuration (in the upper-right section)
- ╖ Click on Aureal A3D Interactive under Sound Driver
- ╖ Click OK to save changes
- ╖ Double-click on OLDEMO.EXE to start the game
-
- DIAMOND MONSTER SOUND CARD KNOWN PROBLEMS
- You may experience a loss of sound, especially when you are
- playing a multiplayer game in quad-speaker mode.
-
- When using the Microsoft Sidewinder Pro 3D joystick with
- the Diamond Monster Sound card, the sound card will not
- acknowledge the gaming device if the Microsoft Game Profiler
- is loaded when the joystick drivers are loaded. The
- Sidewinder stick can be used normally only if the Microsoft
- Input Gaming Device Profiler is not loaded. This problem has
- been reported to Microsoft and Diamond.
-
- The drivers for the CH F-16 Combat Stick are incompatible with
- the Diamond Monster Sound card. If the player tries to use this
- stick with these drivers on this sound card, it will not regis-
- ter the stick as being plugged in. There is a workaround for
- this. You can manually add the gameport by going to Add New
- Hardware in the Windows 95 Control Panel. To add the gameport:
- * Go to Control Panel and open it
- * Double click on Add New Hardware
- * Click on Next
- * Select No then click on Next
- * Scroll down the list and select Sound, Video, and Game
- Controllers
- * Scroll down the Manufacturers list and select Microsoft
- * Click on Gameport Joystick under Models, then click on Next
- * Click on Next again, then click on Finish
- * When you go to the Joystick Control Panel, you will need to
- select CH Flightstick Pro as your joystick
-
- If you try to use any gamepad with the Diamond Monster Sound
- card, it will be very difficult to use the controls in the
- game; we advise against trying to use gamepads with this sound
- card.
-
- Diamond is aware of these problems. Please check their website
- for updated drivers at http://www.diamondmm.com.

- VIII) MULTIPLAYER ISSUES
- ------------------------
- INTERNET GAMING ZONE
- To make Internet gaming as easy as possible, you can play
- LucasArts games in the Internet Gaming Zone (TM). The Internet
- Gaming Zone is a free matchmaking service that allows online
- players to find other players and launch Internet games quickly
- and easily. To play this LucasArts game online you donÆt need
- to use Internet Gaming Zone, but it simplifies the process of
- finding players and joining Internet games.
-
- For easy access to online gaming with LucasArts Multiplayer
- games, check out the LEC Multiplayer Home Page at
- www.rebelhq.com. There you will find the latest information on
- network and Internet gaming and a link to the Internet Gaming
- Zone. First-time Zone users should go directly to www.zone.com
- to sign up and download the Zone software. Note: To use the
- Internet Gaming Zone, you will need an ActiveX-capable browser
- such as Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later.
-
- To set up a game in The Zone:
- 1) You should have the game already installed but do NOT start
- it. The Zone will launch it for you automatically.
- 2) Connect to your Internet Service Provider and launch your
- Web Browser.
- 3) In the Address box of your Web browser, type www.zone.com
- and press Enter.
- 4) If you are new to The Zone, you will need to become a mem-
- ber. Follow the directions on the web page to sign up as a
- member and to install the necessary software before entering
- The Zone. If you are already a member and have all of the
- necessary software installed, you can go straight to the
- Outlaws lobby.
- 5) Once you are in The Zone, you will need to choose from the
- available rooms. After entering a room, you can chat with
- other players and when you are ready to play, you can start
- an Internet game or join an existing one. For more infor-
- mation on how to use The Zone, see the Zone Help section of
- the web page.
- 6) Once any player has selected to host a game, they must wait
- until other players have joined (up to a maximum of 8 play-
- ers including the host). Whenever the host is ready, they
- can initiate the game and it will be launched automatically
- on all playersÆ machines.
- 7) Because of the way the Zone launches the game, the password
- function should not be used.
- 8) When you are done with a gaming session and wish to start or
- join a new Internet game, simply exit from the game and re-
- turn to the Internet Gaming Zone.
-
-
