  15. brings the fun back to personal computers.  Within minutes of

  17. installing and launching BeOS 5 Personal Edition, you'll say

  27. But first, let us explain what BeOS 5 Personal Edition is and

  29. how it works.

  33. BeOS 5 is an operating system that's designed from the bottom up to
  34.  
  35. unleash the processing power of modern personal computers.  To make
  36.  
  37. BeOS 5 available to as many people as possible, we've created this 
  38.  
  39. Personal Edition version that fits inside a single compressed file
  40.  
  41. that can be downloaded to your Windows 95, 98, 2000, or Windows NT4
  42.  
  43. computer.

  47. By following the instructions included in this document, you can
  48.  
  49. turn your downloaded file into a Windows application that boots and
  50.  
  51. runs BeOS 5*.  You don't need any special hardware, you don't need
  52.  
  53. a separate partition for your BeOS files, and, best of all, it's
  54.  
  55. free.

  59. As you might expect, squeezing an entire operating system into
  60.  
  61. a single file imposes some limitations (as described in the next
  62.  
  63. section).  Although BeOS 5 Personal Edition is by no means a
  64.  
  65. "crippled" version of BeOS, it isn't as robust or as flexible as 
  66.  
  67. the "real" version, BeOS 5 Pro Edition.   We hope that the Personal 
  68.  
  69. Edition version will give you enough of a taste of BeOS 5 that 
  70.

  101. Limitations of BeOS 5 Personal Edition

  107. In the spirit of full disclosure, this section lists some of the
  108.  
  109. limitations of BeOS 5 Personal Edition.  As noted in the 
  110.  
  111. descriptions, some of these limitations are alleviated in 
  112.  
  113. BeOS 5 Pro Edition.

  119. - Disk Space (Part 1)

  123. When it's uncompressed, BeOS 5 Personal Edition inflates to 512 
  124.  
  125. megabytes, no more, no less.  This means that you need to have 
  126.  
  127. 512 megabytes of disk space available before you start the 
  128.  
  129. installation instructions (below).  The BeOS 5 Pro Edition can 
  130.  
  131. be installed in a partition as small as 256 megabytes or as large 
  132.  
  133. as your largest hard drive.

  139. - Restarting Windows after Running BeOS
  140.

  143. As mentioned above, the BeOS 5 Personal Edition that you 
  144.  
  145. downloaded turns itself into a Windows application when you 
  146.  
  147. install the downloaded file.  Unlike most Window applications, 
  148.  
  149. however, BeOS 5 Personal Edition takes over your computer:  
  150.  
  151. It shuts down Windows and launches BeOS 5.  To get back to 
  152.  
  153. Windows, you have to reboot your computer.  Note that running 
  154.  
  155. BeOS 5 Personal Edition will not harm your Windows operating 
  156.  
  157. system -- it doesn't delete any data or alter the Windows 
  158.  
  159. registry.  When you reboot into Windows after running BeOS 5, 
  160.  
  161. your computer will revert to its normal plodding existence.

  167. - Disk Space (Part 2)  
  168.

  171. Once you've got BeOS 5 Personal Edition running you may wonder, 
  172.  
  173. "Where did all my disk space go?"   
  174.  
  175.

  177. Remember, Personal Edition "lives" inside a 512 megabyte file. 
  178.  
  179. Some of the 512 megabytes is taken up by the operating system 
  180.  
  181. itself, and some more is devoted to a variable-sized "swap file" 
  182.  
  183. (or "virtual memory").  After all of that is accounted for, 
  184.  
  185. you might not have a whole lot of room left for writing and saving 
  186.  
  187. files.  To get around this shortcoming, you can mount other 
  188.  
  189. partitions.  For example, you can mount your "normal" Windows 
  190.  
  191. partition and read, play, and write files you have stored there
  192.  
  193. (of course, not all files will be recognized by BeOS).

  197. But if after booting you find you don't have a lot of disk space 
  198.  
  199. available, we recommend you purchase the BeOS 5 Pro Edition, 
  200.  
  201. which isn't limited to 512 megabytes.

  207. - Multi-processors
  208.

  211. One of the most important breakthroughs in modern computer 
  212.  
  213. hardware is the advent of multiple processor systems (i.e. 
  214.  
  215. computers that have more than one CPU).   However, most 
  216.  
  217. operating systems have been slow to adapt to this new 
  218.  
  219. world -- they simply don't know how to take full advantage of 
  220.  
  221. multi-processor systems.  But BeOS does:  The ability to recognize
  222.  
  223. and really get the most out of multiple processors is one of the 
  224.  
  225. features that makes BeOS stand apart from the other guys.

  229. Unfortunately, BeOS 5 Personal Edition, because of technical 
  230.  
  231. reasons, can only recognize one processor.  If you have a 
  232.  
  233. multi-processor system, we strongly encourage you to purchase the 
  234.  
  235. BeOS 5 Pro Edition.  We think you'll agree that it's worth it.

  241. - Graphics Cards, Sound Cards, Network Cards, and Other Hardware
  242.

  245. BeOS 5 doesn't support every piece of hardware in the world.  We 
  246.  
  247. try to cover most of the modern, mainstream (and some cutting 
  248.  
  249. edge) hardware, but, to be honest, we don't come close to the 
  250.  
  251. range and variety of cards and devices that are supported by 
  252.  
  253. Windows.  It's possible that your graphics card, sound card, 
  254.  
  255. network card, or other hardware device won't work with BeOS 5, 
  256.  
  257. whether you have the Personal Edition or the Pro Edition.  For a 
  258.

  273. All the royalty-laden software that's available in BeOS 5 Pro

  275. Edition has been removed from the Personal Edition version.

  277. Most notably, you won't be able to play streaming Real audio or 
  278.  
  279. video, and you won't be able to write mp3 or indeo media data.

  285. Installation Instructions

  291. To install BeOS 5 Personal Edition you need:
  292.

  295. - A Pentium-based computer with at least 32 megabytes of RAM (P90
  296.  
  297.   or higher is recommended). 
  298.  
  299. - At least 512 megabytes of free disk space on a non-compressed 
  300.  
  301.   FAT, FAT32, or NTFS drive.
  302.  
  303. - Windows 95/98, 2000, or NT4.
  304.  
  305. - A blank floppy.  
  306.

  309. Important:  The last item is used to create a bootable floppy.  If
  310.  
  311. you're running Windows 2000 or NT4 you must create and use the
  312.  
  313. boot floppy -- you won't be able to simply launch BeOS 5 from an
  314.  
  315. application file.  For Windows 95/98 users, launching the
  316.  
  317. application file should work, but even so, you should create a boot
  318.  
  319. floppy just in case. If you find yourself having problems launching
  320.  
  321. or running BeOS 5 Personal Edition try launching using the boot
  322.  
  323. floppy instead of using the BeOS 5 Personal Edition icon on the
  324.  
  325. Windows desktop.

  329. Boot into your Windows operating system, and then follow
  330.  
  331. these steps:

  335. 1. Close all running applications.
  336.

  339. 2. Launch the ".EXE" file that you downloaded.

  343. 3. The BeOS 5 Installer starts and displays a Welcome... screen.

  345.    Click Next.

  349. 4. Read the License Agreement that appears and click Yes to proceed
  350.  
  351.    or No to quit.  If you quit, you'll return to Windows without
  352.  
  353.    installing any BeOS files.

  357. 5. Read the BeOS Information screen; it tells you more about the 
  358.  
  359.    installation procedure.  Click Next when you're ready to 
  360.  
  361.    continue.

  365. 6. Select the drive you want to install onto, or accept the default
  366.  
  367.    (drive C:).
  368.

  371. 7. Select the Program Folder that should be used to store the BeOS
  372.  
  373.    icons, or accept the default.

  377. 8. A summary of the your settings is displayed.  Accept them by
  378.  
  379.    clicking Install, or click Back to change them.

  383. 9. If you're running Windows 200 or NT4, you'll be prompted to
  384.  
  385.    insert the blank boot floppy.  If you're running Windows 95/98,
  386.  
  387.    you'll have to create the boot floppy after the installation has
  388.  
  389.    finished, as described in the next section.

  393. Now sit back while the BeOS 5 Personal Edition files are copied
  394.  
  395. onto the chosen drive.  When the installation is finished, you'll
  396.  
  397. be prompted to register your copy of BeOS 5 Personal Edition.

  401. We strongly recommend that you reboot Windows before booting into
  402.  
  403. BeOS 5 Personal Edition for the first time.

  409. Creating a Boot Floppy

  415. If you're running Windows 2000 or NT4, you should have created a
  416.  
  417. boot floppy during the BeOS 5 installation.  But if you're running
  418.  
  419. Windows 95/98 -- or if you simply want to create another boot
  420.  
  421. floppy -- follow the instructions here.

  425. 1. Boot into Windows.

  429. 2. Go to the Start button, browse to Programs > BeOS 5 Personal 
  430.  
  431.    Edition, and select Create Boot Floppy.

  435. 3. A dialog asks you if you want to create the floppy.  After 
  436.  
  437.    you've inserted a blank floppy disk into the A: drive, 
  438.  
  439.    click Yes.

  461. If you encounter problems launching or running BeOS 5 try

  463. starting your computer from the BeOS Boot Floppy:
