- 1. INTRODUCTION
- -----------------
- WELCOME TO SACREM !
-
- For a short period you are the CEO of SACREM Inc..The former CEO has
- left the company due to personal reasons and you are appointed to this job
- by the BOD.
- Unfortunately you are to begin immediately and there is no one in the company
- who can guide you.
- Good L u c k !
-
-
- 2. CHARACTER OF THE BUSINESS
- ------------------------------
- As in any company, the performance of Sacrem's chief executive is measured by
- the financial situation of the company. The cash level at the end of your term
- determines your overall performance. You should bear in mind that, while taking
- any decision throughout the game.
- SACREM is a company manufacturing and marketing detergents. As you begin your
- job as CEO, you get the sales results of the previous month, which brings you
- both cash money and an insight to the market.
- SACREM has three different products that are marketed all over the world
- through dealers. It also has four regional warehouses: New Jersey,USA; Brussels
- Europe; Seoul,FarEast and Nairobi,R.O.W.(Rest Of the World).
- he manufacturing facilities are situated in Brussels.Following the sales re-
- port of the previous month you are to decide what quantities of each product
- to produce and to which regions to send them.
-
- 3. THE PRODUCT
- ----------------
- At any given time you have three different detergents in production and in the
- market. These are packed in 20 lb.(10 kg.) packs. The product has a restricted
- lifetime, once introduced it will enjoy from a popularity which will decrease
- gradually. In order to maintain your sales volume at reasonable levels you can
- introduce new products. Every month SACREM's R&D Dpt. will develop a new pro-
- duct. If you think it appropriate you can ask for an evaluation of a new pro-
- duct. Since such an evaluation will cost quite a lot of money, you shoud not
- ask for it if your present products are doing well.
- Once a new product is evaluated and found to be promising you may release it
- instead of one of the three old products. A release of a new prduct requires
- removal of an older product from the market, resulting in the total loss of
- its stocks.
- Sometimes a new product can prove itself to be a "Dog"; no one guarantees that
- a new product will do better than an older one.
-
-
-
- 4.THE GAME
- ------------
- Every month you receive a series of reports which shows your performance and
- helps you taking operational decisions.
- The game consists of a series of menu driven screens. Some of them are Infor-
- mative (I) whereas others are Operational (O).
- Following is the list of these screens with a brief explanation.
- - Income Statement (I) : Shows the company's financial performance during the
- the last month.
-
- - Financial History (I) :Shows SACREM's financial history from your taking
- pver as CEO. The top graph shows the monthly cash
- levels; the lower graph shows both the monthly sales
- as well as the profit resulting from these sales.
- Profit sometimes may be negative (=Loss).
-
- - Sales History (I) : Shows the sales history of each product on a monthly
- basis.
-
- - Last Sales Data (I) : Sales data during the last month; shows statistics per
- product and per region. The 'Ratio to Nominal' column is
- of prime importance; this indicates how well a product
- or a region is doing as far as sales are concerned. The
- average number for this ratio is "1"; any number larger
- than "1" indicates better than average performance, and
- vice versa.
-
- - Stock Status (I) : Stock levels in each of the warehouses.
-
- - Product and Machine Status (I) : Shows product price, cost, rebate rate,
- manufacturing time of each product in each
- machine (in hours),and the raw material cost
- for the production of each product (in $).
- This screen also shows the number of mach-
- ines in the production floor, and the load on
- each machine during the last month of pro-
- duction; a load of "1" is ideal,whenever this
- is exceeded the machines are overloaded and
- work in shifts is required resulting in some
- inefficiency and therefore higher labor cost.
-
- - Product Evaluate (I) : Data on the product developped by the R&D Dpt.and
- which can be released as a new product in the
- current month.
-
- - New Product Release (O) : Allows you to release the new product developped
- by the R&D Dpt this month. This new product will
- substitute an old product selected by you. All the
- existing stocks of the older product are lost.
-
- - Sales Network (O) : Modification of the international sales network to
- enhance sales volume. You are to indicate in which
- region you are making a reorganization. The results of
- this operation may be negative and result in even
- lower sales.
-
- - Investment (O) : Purchasing of new machines to reduce costly overload.
- Buying new machines will increase your inventory and
- thus your depreciation costs.
-
- - Pricing Policy (O) : Rebate rates on nominal prices to increase sales or
- profit A negative entry results in a negative rebate
- rate (=price increase).A positive entry causes a dec-
- rease in product price.
-
- - Production Plan (O) : Master operational plan determining manufacturing and
- shipping quantities. It is here that you are deciding
- what to manufacture and to which region to send it. Be
- very careful not to enter a large number by mistake;
- this can cause a lot of unrequired expenses.(We suggest
- 20000 as the maximum quantity to be shipped to any
- region.) In order to facilitate for you to enter the
- quantities each entry is automatically multiplied by
- 1000; i.e. if you decide to manufacture 8000 units you
- shoul enter "8" only; you can also enter fractions like
- ".3" or "2.8".
-
-
- 5. SOME HINTS
- --------------
- Unless otherwise specified, pressing "ANY" key will let you proceed throughout
- the game.
- When a wrong entry is made the program will not accept it and you must reenter
- the correct data type to proceed (e.g. a non-numeric data as the rebate rate is
- not acceptable).
-
-
- 6. IMPORTANT NOTICE
