- 1 About Netport Manager
-
- This release of the NetportExpress XL print server includes
- Netport Manager, a Windows application that you use to configure
- the XL. You can also use Netport Manager to configure all other
- models of Netport print servers, including the NetportExpress EL,
- the Netport II, and the original Netport print server. You can
- run Netport Manager with Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups.
-
- This version of Netport Manager includes enhancements that provide
- new network management support, additional UNIX version support,
- and improved response time.
-
- 2 Updating Existing NetportExpress XL Print Servers
-
- To install Netport Manager:
-
- a) Log in as Supervisor.
- b) Start Windows.
- c) From the Program Manager File menu, choose Run.
- d) Browse to the directory where you uncompressed the software and select
- SETUP.EXE.
- e) Choose OK (and OK) and follow the instructions on your screen.
-
- You can install Netport Manager on your local hard drive or on the Network.
- - If you specify a directory on your local drive, Setup copies the
- Netport Manager files to that directory and copies the NetWare DLLs to
- your Windows System directory. If the System directory contains older
- NetWare DLLs, Setup makes a backup copy.
- - If you specify a network directory, Setup copies the Netport Manager
- files and the NetWare DLLs to that directory.
-
- After installing the Netport Manager files, Setup creates a new Windows
- program group with the Netport Manager program icon. Double click on this
- icon to start Netport Manager.
-
- Hints on using Netport Manager
- a. Choose Contents on the Help menu and look at the Basics topics in Help for
- an overview of using Netport Manager to set up an XL or other Netport
- print server.
- b. Read the message at the bottom of the Netport Manager window for
- information about each control.
- c. To display more information, press F1, or click on the Help button on the
- Toolbar and then click on a control.
-
-
- After you install Netport Manager, you should update the Flash memory
- and the Application Code for your existing XLs. (To check an XL
- version, use the Status option in Netport Manager. Update any XLs
- with an RBL version number at 2.21 or lower.)
-
- To update the RBL Flash memory of an XL to version V02.22a:
-
- a Start Netport Manager and select an XL in the Netports list box.
- b From the Utilities menu, choose Update.
- c In the Open window, select the file NFLASH.NET from the Netport
- Manager directory.
- d Choose OK.
-
- Note: This update changes the operation of the switches on the back
- panel of any XL with an RBL version number lower than 2.11. If
- the RBL version is lower than 2.11, change the switches on the
- back panel of the XL for the NetWare frame type used on your
- network. After you update the Flash memory, unplug the power
- connector from the XL and use the following tables to set the
- switches. Then reconnect the power. (The frame type settings
- affect access to NetWare file servers and workstations and have
- no affect on TCP/IP or AppleTalk printing.)

- Upgrading the Application Code for an XL
-
- The Application Code is stored in the SYS:LOGIN directory of the
- RBL file server. After you install the new version of Netport Manager,
- it copies the new Application Code to the SYS:LOGIN directory of the RBL
- file servers you specify as part of XL configuration.
-
- To upgrade the Application Code for a configured XL
-
- a) Start Netport Manager and select the Netport you want to upgrade.
- b) Choose Configure.
- c) Choose Configure Netport Hardware. The Remote Boot Load Server
- field shows the current RBL file server. You can update the
- Application Code on this RBL server or select another.
- d) Choose OK. Netport Manager copies the latest version of the
- Application Code to the RBL server. Other XLs that use the same
- RBL file server will be upgraded when you reset them.
-
-
-
- 3 SNMP Support
-
- Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) Configuration
-
- This release of Netport Manager supports SNMP agent configuration.
- The XL's SNMP support is for SNMP version 1 and for the Management
- Information Base (MIB-II, RFC 1213). You can configure the XL with
- two SNMP communities and two trap targets as described below.
-
- To configure the XL for SNMP
-
- a Start Netport Manager and select an XL.
- b Choose Configure from the Main Menu.
- c From the Configure Menu, choose Protocols to display the Configure
- Protocols window.
- d In the Protocols list box, select SNMP and choose Configure.
- e In the Configure IP window, define the XL's IP address, subnet
- mask, default gateway IP address, and ARP (Address Resolution
- Protocol) Timeout value. If your XL is already set up for TCP/IP
- printing, Netport Manager automatically displays the information.
-
- Note: Changing the IP information here, changes your XL's TCP/IP
- configuration.
-
- f Choose SNMP to display the Configure SNMP window.
- g In the Location and Contact fields, specify the XL's physical
- location, and the name of the person responsible for managing the
- XL as a node on the network.
- h In the SNMP Community fields, you can define two community names
- and access permissions for the XL. The default community name is
- Public. Default security access is Read-Only. To provide write
- access to the SysLocation and SysContact variables within the
- system group, define a unique Community name and set the Access
- field to Read-Write. The Community Name field is case sensitive.
- i To define trap information for one or two target consoles,
- choose Traps to display the SNMP Traps window. For trap
- configuration instructions, see the information described below.
- If you don't want to set up trapping information, choose OK to
- accept the SNMP configuration.
-
- Defining SNMP Traps and Targets
-
- You can configure the XL to notify one or two management consoles
- whenever the XL starts up (resets) and if the XL receives a request from
- an invalid community.
-
- To set up SNMP Traps and Targets
-
- a) Display the SNMP Traps window as described in Step 11 above.
- Check the Enable Traps box. Selecting Enable Traps causes the XL
- to notify a defined target whenever it starts up (cold start trap)
- and allows you to define an authentication trap.
- b) If you want the XL to notify the specified consoles whenever it
- receives a request from an invalid community, then check the
- Authentication box.
- c) Identify one or two target SNMP consoles by specifying an IP
- Address and Community Name for each target. If you select Enable
- Traps, you must define at least one target.
- d) Choose OK to accept the trap and target definitions.
- From the Configure SNMP window, choose OK to accept the SNMP
- configuration.
-
-
- 4 NMS Support
-
- This release of Netport Manager supports Novell's NetWare Management
- System (NMS), version 2.0b and later. Integrating the Netport Manager
- software with NMS allows you to identify your Netport print servers in
- NMS network maps and run Netport Manager from an NMS menu or network map.
-
- The instructions outlined below describe integrating NMS with Netport
- Manager and launching the Netport Manager software. They assume you have
- already installed the NMS Console as instructed by your Novell documentation.
-
- To integrate NMS with Intel's Netport Manager software
-
- a) Run Netport Manager's Setup program to install the required files
- for Intel's Netport Manager software. The Netport Manager Setup
- program copies the NMS Setup program into the Netport Manager
- directory and adds an item for it in the Program Manager group.
-
- b) From the Netport program group double-click on the NMS Setup icon.
- The NMS Setup program registers the Netports with the NMS console.
- This allows the NMS console to discover Netport print servers on
- the network and display them on the NMS map. You can then use these
- Netport print server icons to launch Netport Manager from the NMS
- map as explained below.
-
- To launch Netport Manager from NMS
-
- a) Display the NMS console map.
-
- b) Open the NMS segment map where the desired Netport print
- server resides. (For information on how to open network maps,
- see your NMS documentation.)
-
- c) Double-click the desired Netport print server icon. This starts
- Netport Manager.(You could also select a desired Netport print
- server from the NMS map and choose the Manage Intel Netport
- option from the Tools menu.)
-
- Netport Manager displays its Main Menu with the selected Netport
- print server highlighted in the Netports list box. Netport
- Manager creates a temporary NMS domain that includes only the
- selected Netport print server. (To use Netport Manager to view other
- Netport print servers on the network, change domains.)
-
-
- d) Select the desired Netport Manager option for the selected Netport
- print server.
-
-
- 5 SFT III Support
-
- NetWare System Fault Tolerance (SFT III) Support
-
- The XL now supports SFT III to provide continuous printing service
- even if its primary file server goes down. With SFT III the XL
- automatically attaches to the mirroring NetWare server without
- losing any queued print jobs. With this update, the XL does not
- require any special configuration to provide SFT III support.
-
- 6 New UNIX Version Support and Automated Installation
-
- There is a new automated script, npinstall, that makes
- installing and configuring SCO 3.2, SUNOS 4.1.x, Solaris 2
- 5.1, and UnixWare simple. The script is run on the
- UNIX host. For TCP/IP support of the above hosts including
- npinstall, please download the archive NPUNIX.TAR from the BBS,
- CompuServ or the FTP server (ftp.intel.com).
-
- 7 Software and Performance Enhancements
-
- Some of the Netport Manager windows have been changed to provide the
- additional functionality described below.
-
- Refreshing One Netport in the Netports List Box
-
- You can double-click on a Netport in the Netports list box to query
- and refresh the view of that Netport. You can use this method to
- refresh communication for a Netport with a grayed-out icon (indicating
- that it is currently not responding to Netport Manager's queries). To
- refresh the view of all Netports in the Netports list box, choose
- Refresh on the View menu.
-
- Printing Netport Status Information
-
- Using Auto Linefeed with the Parallel Ports
-
- If you have a line printer connected to one of the XL's parallel
- ports and it prints an extra linefeed, you can use Netport Manager
- to turn Auto Linefeed off for that parallel port.
-
- To Turn Auto Linefeed Off
-
- a) Select the XL with the affected parallel port in the Netports list
- box.
-
- b) Choose Configure from the Netport Manager Main Menu.
-
- c) Choose Netport Hardware.
-
- d) From the Configure Netport Hardware window, choose Ports.
-
- e) Uncheck the Auto Linefeed box for the desired Parallel port.
-
- Defining the Netport Print Server Location
-
- To enter a description of the XL's physical location on the network
- (for example Building 3, Room 210) either type the information in
- the Location field of the Configure Netport Hardware window, or
- select a previously entered location. You can type a location name
- of up to 80 characters. Netport Manager saves the last 10 locations
- entered.
-
- AppleTalk printing
-
- AppleTalk printing is faster and more robust with this release of the
- NetportExpress software.
-
-
- 8 Software Limitations
-
- Print Job Maintenance
-
- This release of Netport Manager does not support print job maintenance. Do
- not select Form Change in the Notify List window. If you select Form Change,
- you cannot restart the print job with Netport Manager.
-
-
- AppleTalk Zone
-
- If you configure an XL for AppleTalk printing and specify an AppleTalk Zone
- that does not exist, the XL will use the default Zone. On mixed topology
- networks with Ethernet and Token Ring segments, the XL also uses the
- default Zone if you specify a Zone and the XL and router are not on the
- same segment.
-
- Note: The XL does not require you to specify an AppleTalk Zone.
