  1. Levels of Security
  2.                          LANProtect provides two types of security.  First, the four scans can
  3.                          be configured to offer different levels of protection against viruses. 
  4.                          Second, LANProtect password protection ensures that unauthorized
  5.                          personnel will not tamper with the scans.
  6.  
  7.                          The way you use and configure LANProtect determines the system■s
  8.                          level of protection against viruses.
  9.  
  10.                          Maximum Security
  11.                          LANProtect defaults to the highest level of security.  The following
  12.                          configurations are the defaults for maximum security: 
  13.                          ■   Scan all DOS and Macintosh files on the Prescheduled and Manual
  14.                              Server scans
  15.                          ■   Scan both incoming and outgoing files on the server with the Real
  16.                              Time scan
  17.                          ■   Move infected files to the specified or default virus directory
  18.                          ■   Generate and save a report to a text file upon scan completion
  19.                          ■   Notify more than one person when a virus is detected
  20.                          ■   Require passwords known only by a select few to unload and
  21.                              unlock the LANProtect menu screen
  22.                          ■   Notify users when they access an infected file

  25.                          Moderate Security
  26.                          This level of security relates to a more relaxed virus detection and
  27.                          remedial environment.  The following is a list of the configurations
  28.                          and options selected for moderate security:
  29.                          ■   Scan selected files intermittently with the Manual Server and
  30.                              Prescheduled Server scans
  31.                          ■   Scan only incoming files with the Real Time scan
  32.                          ■   Rename infected files
  33.                          ■   Generate a report and send it to the printer
  34.                          ■   Notify only the system administrator when a virus is found Password Protection
  35.                          Password protection for unloading LANProtect and limiting access to
  36.                          all the menus in LANProtect is built in.  In addition, you may
  37.                          optionally lock the NLM screen when you walk away from the
  38.                          console.  
  39.                          To unload the LANProtect NLM for maximum security:
  40.                          1.  Press <Esc> from the LANProtect Options menu.
  41.                              A dialog box appears.

  43.                          2.  Select Yes to unload the LANProtect NLM.
  44.                              A dialog box appears.
  45.  
  46.                          3.  Enter the LANProtect Unload password.
  47.                              The default password is LANPROTECT.
  48.                              The LANProtect NLM is unloaded.  If you configure it to load
  49.                              with immediate password protection, only those who know the
  50.                              unlock password will be able to access LANProtect.
  51.                          In the Security menu the following options are available:
  52.                          ■   Lock LANProtect Menu
  53.                          ■   Modify Screen Unlock Password
  54.                          ■   Modify Unload Password
  55.  
  56.                              To ensure maximum security, default passwords should be changed
  57.                              once the scans are configured and running.  Default passwords for
  58.                              the LANProtect NLM are the same:  LANPROTECT.
  59.  
  60.                          Lock LANProtect Menu
  61.                          The ■Lock LANProtect Menu■ option allows the supervisor to restrict
  62.                          access to the LANProtect NLM screen.  When the menus are locked,
  63.                          the only screens that are accessible without the password are the help
  64.                          screens (accessed by pressing <F1>) and the Monitor screen (accessed
  65.                          by pressing <F8>).  
  66.                          To lock the LANProtect menu:
  67.                          1.  Select Security | Lock LANProtect Menu.
  68.                              A dialog box appears.  All LANProtect menus are inaccessible
  69.                              until the correct password is entered.

  71.                          The only screens available to someone without the required password
  72.                          are the help and Monitor screens.  The help screens are accessed by
  73.                          pressing <F1>, and the Monitor screen is accessed by pressing <F8>.

  75.                          Loading LANProtect with Immediate Password
  76.                          Protection
  77.                          LANProtect can be loaded with an optional command line switch,
  78.                          PROTECT, so it will immediately lock and require a password to
  79.                          access the LANProtect menu screen .  This option is useful when there
  80.                          is a power outage or when you load LANProtect from the
  81.                          AUTOEXEC.NCF.
  82.                          To load LANProtect with immediate password protection:
  83.                          1.  Type the following at the console prompt or in the AUTOEXEC.NCF
  84.                              file:
  85.                          LOAD LPROTECT PROTECT
  86.                          2.  Press <Enter>.

  88.                          Modifying the Screen Unlock Password
  89.                          The ■Modify Screen Unlock Password■ option allows the network
  90.                          administrator to change the password used to unlock the LANProtect
  91.                          menu.  
  92.                          To modify the screen unlock password:
  93.                          1.  Select Security | Modify Screen Unlock Password.
  94.                              You are prompted for the current password.
  95.  
  96.                  Note:   The default password is LANPROTECT.  The password is not case
  97.                          sensitive.
  98.                          2.  Type in the current password and press <Enter>.
  99.                              If you typed in the current password correctly, you are prompted
  100.                              for the new password.
  101.  
  102.                          3.  Type in the new password.
  103.                              You are prompted to verify the password.
  104.  
  105.                          4.  Retype the new password for verification.
  106.                              The password for unlocking the screen is now changed and you
  107.                              are returned to the Security menu.
  108.  
  109.                          Modifying the Unload Password
  110.                          Once the LANProtect NLM is loaded it cannot be unloaded without a
  111.                          password.  When you try to unload LANProtect from the LANProtect
  112.                          main menu, you are prompted for a password.  If you try to unload
  113.                          LANProtect from the file server console prompt, a message will appear
  114.                          telling you the NLM is not loaded.
  115.                          To change the unload password:
  116.                          1.  Select Security | Modify Unload Password.
  117.                              You are prompted for the current password.

  119.                  Note:   The default password is LANPROTECT.  The password is not case
  120.                          sensitive.
  121.                          2.  Type the current password and press <Enter>.
  122.                              If you typed the current password correctly, you are prompted for
  123.                              the new password.
  124.  
  125.                          3.  Type in the new password.
  126.                              You are prompted to verify the password.
  127.                          4.  Retype the new password for verification.
  128.                              The unload password is now changed and you are returned to the
  129.                              Security menu.
  130.                              If you have forgotten any of your passwords, you must contact
  131.                              Intel■s technical support.
