  2.          IBM COMPATIBLE SHAREWARE TELECOMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE

  4.           The following shareware and freeware telecommunications
  5.           products may be downloaded from many BBSs and online
  6.           services. You will likely have to unzip the programs
  7.           because most BBSs and online services zip programs to
  8.           save space. The beauty of shareware is that it allows you
  9.           to "try before you buy."
  10.           
  11.           Sometimes the telecommunications software programs that
  12.           come bundled with inexpensive modems are really
  13.           inadequate and are a waste of your time. Do yourself a
  14.           favor and try one of the excellent programs mentioned
  15.           below. If you obtain one of these shareware or freeware
  16.           programs, make sure that you print out (and read) the
  17.           manual. The manual is usually included as a text file.
  18.           The MICROLINK manual (see MICROLINK below) is in the form
  19.           of a Windows Write file. The others can be loaded and
  20.           printed with an editor such as EDIT (which comes with DOS
  21.           5.0 and greater) or a word processor.  The nice thing
  22.           about these communications programs is that most use the
  23.           same commands to perform the same functions. For example,
  24.           <ALT> D is the usual command to bring up the dialing menu
  25.           on the DOS-based communications programs. <ALT> X is
  26.           often used to exit communications programs.

  34.           MICROLINK is a good Windows shareware telecommunications
  35.           program. It has all the needed features plus a Lights
  36.           Bar, a Session Window, and a Status Bar. Another fine
  37.           feature in the registered version, is the ability to
  38.           record scripts. Scripts make your life online easier.

  50.           QMODEM TEST DRIVE is a full-featured shareware
  51.           telecommunications program. Unlike most shareware
  52.           products, this one can be used by individuals for
  53.           personal use and evaluation for an unlimited time period.
  54.           Because of the many features, Qmodem is a favorite among
  55.           sysops. You can download the shareware version from most
  56.           BBSs, including the one run by Mustang Software, Inc. See
  57.           the phone number above. They also have commercial
  58.           versions called Qmodem Pro for DOS and Qmodem Pro for
  59.           Windows. These have even more features than the shareware
  60.           version. The folks at Mustang Software have excellent
  61.           products.

  69.           RIPTERM is a graphics-based communications program with
  70.           mouse support and is a freeware program. The authors are
  71.           not requesting any money at all. A freeware program is
  72.           copyrighted and has copyright restrictions; however, the
  73.           author is not requesting a registration fee. RIPTERM
  74.           shows Rip graphics which are the latest rage on BBSs.
  75.           RIPTERM is easy to set up and does a nice job. It may not
  76.           have all the features, but the price is right.

  85.           TELEMATE is a shareware telecommunications full-featured
  86.           program that has many extras like internal multi-tasking.
  87.           TELEMATE has many strong supporters and is yet another
  88.           example of how some of the best programs are shareware.

  96.           TELIX is a full-featured communications program and is
  97.           this writer's favorite shareware modem software. It is
  98.           both easy to use and easy to set up. It has a modem setup
  99.           program (MODEMCFG) that offers you a pick list of
  100.           hundreds of modems. After choosing the appropriate modem,
  101.           it will automatically customize the program to support
  102.           your modem (setting your modem initialization strings,
  103.           etc.). TELIX has sophisticated transfer protocols, two
  104.           script languages, an advanced host mode and is very
  105.           powerful.
