- Hello WinPlanet Readers!
-
- Let's talk a little about everyone's favorite topic: making your computer
- run faster.
-
- In a lot of cases you can make everything run more smoothly just by
- reducing the things your computer is trying to do. Often you'll find that
- your computer is trying to do more than you realize.
-
- It's always a good idea to look at what programs are in your Startup
- folder and system tray. The Startup folder contains programs (or links to
- them) that are run each time Windows starts up. You can look at these
- through the Start menu: Start->Programs->StartUp. The system tray is the
- little square in the bottom right hand corner, with a clock and a few
- small icons. Some programs use up speed because they're working in the
- background. Others just use up memory, giving other programs less space
- to work with. By using the right mouse button, you can find out more about
- what programs are in there. Often by poking around you'll discover that
- programs are running that you don't need.
-
-
- In one place that I worked, many of the employees had slightly older
- computers. Periodically they'd find that their computers would slow down
- for no apparent reason. The reason was simple: someone had set all the
- computers to update the "Find Fast" database at very small intervals, such
- as every hour or half hour. The Find Fast database keeps track of where
- your files are so that you can find them without actually searching for
- them. You probably only need to update once a day, if at all. In fact,
- if you don't do a lot of searching for files (eg. if you know where your
- files are) then you might want it completely turned off. Change the
- settings from the Control Panel: Start->Control Panel->Find Fast.
-
- With the introduction of Windows ME came a lot of new features that can
- make life easier, or slower. The new System Restore facility greatly
- increases the reliability of your system, albeit not very proactively.
- (It just lets you get back to where you were before.) However, it also
- slows the system down frequently. If you decide you prefer the speed to
- the reliability, you may wish to turn off System Restore. I recommend
- this for advanced users only, but you can do this in the Control Panel.
- In the System folder choose the Performance tab, then File
- System->Troubleshooting. By checking the box marked "Disable System
- Restore" you can turn System Restore off.
-
- One last thing will make things run a little faster: reboot occasionally.
- Lamentably, Windows 95/98/ME still has a lot of stability issues and
- rebooting will often fix this. Sometimes specific programs can slow down
- performance after they crash, for example. Usually I keep my computer
- running all the time, but I've learned to recognize when the system needs
- a reboot. Windows NT/2000 are a lot better in this regard, although on
- rare occasions a reboot can help as well. For now, rebooting is just a
- fact of life as a Windows user. Fortunately, the directions that Windows
- 2000 has taken suggest that this won't be the case forever.
