- Your Weekly Source For the Best New Files!
- For the Week of January 31, 2001
- Volume 3, Week 5
-
-
- Hi there,
-
- Information at your fingertips. We may tire of hearing it, but we don't
- tire of having it.
- Workers want their information and they want it fast. That must be why
- there are an ever-increasing number of choices
- for information software. It's like a 2-minute research assistant. We
- dinosaurs remember calling "the research desk"
- at large libraries where we did our fact-checking but now you can find the
- answers in a small window on your PC.
- CIO.com estimates a typical employee spends 30 minutes a day searching for
- information. Alex Brown guesses the
- cost per information query is between $4 and $5.
-
- Well, one small download later and you can simply click on a word and have
- a "wealth of information," as the saying goes,
- at your fingertips. Atomica One-Click for Windows (formerly GuruNet) is
- the package a few internet.com folk have been
- using. Download it this week. With an Alt/Right Click, it calls up a
- small popup window within the doc you currently have open.
- In the first 2001 newsletter, FileFarm listed QuickClick from NBC
- Internet, Inc. (NBCi), which is much like GuruNet. Load it,
- then click on any yellow, underlined term (or Alt-Click on a word) and a
- separate browser window pops up with a list of links
- where you can find alternative information (aka Web sites) related to that
- word. See
- http://www.filefarm.com/filefarm/windows/description/1300/?nl
-
- This week, there's also an update from Babylon. No more phone calls or
- reaching for an old textbook or dictionary. Babylon
- provides access to glossaries, dictionaries, and information on converting
- currency, measurements, and time. Activate it
- simply by clicking on an empty space on your screen, then keying in the
- word or number you wish to search.
-
- For Windows and Linux, DNS2Go lets you assign your computer a name. Most
- Internet users have a dynamic IP address, which
- means each time you connect to the Internet you are assigned a different
- number. The problem people are experiencing when
- trying to host a Web server, email server, or FTP server is that it's
- tough to communicate with people because their IP
- address is constantly changing. DNS2Go names your computer and DNS2Go
- automatically resolves the IP address assigned to
- your computer to your chosen name. No matter what your IP address, on-line
- or off, people will be able to reach you.
-
- For Linux, the Farm has a text-based browser that can handle complicated
- tables. w3m was derived from a pager named "fm"
- that was written before 1991 when the Internet was in its infancy. Then
- developer Akinori Ito made a little modification to
- fm to create a Web browser, w3m. The name "w3m" was an abbreviation of a
- Japanese phrase, "WWW wo miru," which means
- "see WWW." This is a relation to fm, which was an abbreviation of "File wo
- miru." The first version of w3m was released at
- the beginning of 1995. Ito used w3m as a pager to read files, E-mails, and
- online manuals. An internet.com reviewer
- said it "laid out complicated pages. Most pages . . . seemed similar
- enough in layout to the graphic versions for me to
- follow what was going on. Navigation is handled with the keyboard only and
- full instructions are found in w3m's manual or
- in the runtime help screen you can get by pressing H."
-
- For the Mac, we have a File Pirate update. Each Mac file has 2 parts, the
- data and the resource fork. An application stores
- pictures, dialog box appearance, sounds, and text as a part of its
- resource fork. The Pirate can extract these and save
- sound resources as System 7 Sound files and picture resources as pic
- files. Use it to display hidden text in applications,
- extract desktop patterns, and collect color icons.
-
- Also for the Mac, ProJPEG's upgrade offers a new interface with resizable
- and zoomable image previews for better compression
- feedback. Credited with creating JPEG files that are often 50 percent
- smaller than PhotoShop's, the product can now
- achieve smaller files that look better by compressing background areas of
- images more and the important
- foreground areas less using a simple saved selection.
-
-
- Happy downloading! Enjoy!
