- MDS PowerBase (Release - 2.0) Overview
- --------------------------------------
-
- This is an evaluation copy of MDS PowerBase. ALL OF THE FEATURES
- OF THE PRODUCT ARE AVAILABLE AND ENABLED. This allows you to use the
- tool so you can understand and appreciate the power of the product.
- Feel free to duplicate and re-distribute this copy of the product as you
- received it. To purchase MDS PowerBase, refer to the MDS PowerBase
- HELP Topic, Registering MDS PowerBase.
-
- MDS PowerBase is a powerful client server development tool used to
- quickly create, manage, and edit the data and server based objects
- (i.e. tables, procedures, views, etc.) on your SQL Server/SYBASE databases.
-
- MDS PowerBase provides database maintenance facilities which separate MDS
- PowerBase from all other products on the market. In addition to the standard
- maintenance of database objects (i.e. tables, procedures, views, etc.), MDS
- PowerBase provides the following features :
-
- * Editable Result Sets - MDS PowerBase enables you to build SQL SELECT
- queries and edit the results of the queries. This is similar to the
- Table Data Maintenance tool. However, this tool adds the ability to
- selectively choose which data to edit. For example, if a developer
- uses a specific range of data within a table, the developer can build
- a SELECT query to retrieve their data. Then edit the result set, which
- in turn updates the underlying tables of the result set.
-
- * Export Table Data - The data export tool enables you to selectively
- extract and format data from tables. This tool is especially useful
- when the format of a table changes (columns added/deleted) and you
- want to save/migrate the existing table data. Using the data export
- tool, you simply select the table columns to export, add any place holders
- (data fillers) for new columns, enter selection criteria (WHERE Clause)
- for the data to be exported (if applicable), and export the data. Then
- using the MDS PowerBase On-line Bulk Copy (BCP) Tool, you copy the
- exported data into the new table.
-
- * Windows Based BCP - Using MDS PowerBase you can run BCP from
- within the Windows environment. No more hassles exiting Windows to
- the DOS prompt and formatting the BCP command line. Simply select
- a table to export/import data from/to, choose your delimiters, and
- click RUN. That's all there is to it. The MDS PowerBase Export Table
- Data Tool adds additional functionality to BCP by enabling you to
- selectively extract data from a table and bulk copy it into another
- table.
-
- * MDS PowerBase provides an integrated stored procedure
- development/debugging environment. MDS PowerBase can automatically
- generate the SQL script necessary to create all types of stored
- procedures which reduces your development time. Using the Procedure
- Test Facility you can immediately test and debug procedures
- after they're created
-
- * MDS PowerBase enables you to generate SQL Scripts to create and
- maintain all database objects. Generating a SQL Script enables you to
- review, edit, and save the SQL before actually updating the database.
-
- * Table Data Maintenance - MDS PowerBase provides a facility for
- real-time updating of table data. The table data grid enables you
- to add, change, and delete rows within a table.
-
- * MDS PowerBase provides an interface to Microsoft Excel enabling you to
- export table data into Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets. You can then
- analyze, change and re-load the data back into your tables using
- the MDS PowerBase Table Synchronization Facility.
-
- * AND MUCH MORE ........
-
- Look at some of the other features of MDS PowerBase:
-
- * Access to an unlimited number of ODBC compliant database management
- systems.
-
- * Create multiple queries with the ability to save and retrieve the SQL
- created thereby eliminating re-entry of commonly used SQL.
-
- * Drag and Drop tables to automatically build SQL SELECT statements
- against the tables.
-
- * Drag and Drop stored procedures, triggers, and views directly from
- a SQL Server database to view their text.
-
- * SQL Script Facility which enables you to easily run queries stored
- in one or more text files.
-
- * View query results in result windows or have the results automatically
- loaded to your favorite text editor.
-
- * Easily build SQL SELECT statements against one or more tables
- including WHERE, ORDER/GROUP BY, and JOIN criteria.
-

- INSTALLING FROM ZIPPED (*.ZIP) FILES
- ------------------------------------
-
- 1) Make two directories on your hard drive. One named DISK1_2, the
- other named DISK3.
-
- 2) Unzip the files DISK1.ZIP and DISK2.ZIP into the directory named DISK1_2.
-
- 3) Unzip the file DISK3.ZIP into the directory named DISK3.
-
- 4) From within Windows, run the SETUP.EXE program in the directory
- named DISK1_2.
-
- 5) Follow the setup instructions.
-
- 6) After the installation of the first disk is complete, you will
- be notified to install the ODBC component of MDS PowerBase. This is
- done by running (from within Windows) the SETUP.EXE program
- in the directory named DISK3.
-
- You only need to install ODBC if it is not already installed on your PC
- or in your shop. ODBC version 1.0 is delivered with MDS PowerBase
- and therefore should not be installed if you have a later version of
- ODBC installed.
-
- Note: If you install the SQL Server ODBC driver, you must install
- the procedures delivered in the file INSTCAT.SQL which is on
- the MDS PowerBase ODBC installation diskette (#3). If you
- are using Sybase System 10, this does not need to be done
- because the ODBC stored procedures are installed as part of
- the System 10 installation.
-
- Each SQL Server datasource must have the procedures loaded onto the
- server. Loading of procedures is usually done by your SQL
- Server Administrator. Refer to the Microsoft Help file named
- DRVSSRVR.HLP (installed into your Windows SYSTEM directory
- after installing the SQL Server ODBC driver) for further
- information about using the SQL Server ODBC driver
- and setting up SQL Server datasources.
-
-
- 7) Review the file named SETUP.LOG in the directory you
- installed MDS PowerBase into. This file contains information about
- each of the files installed.
-
- **** Both SETUP.EXE programs must be run for MDS PowerBase to function.
-
- After Installing the software, Refer to the MDS PowerBase Help Topics
- Getting Started and MDS PowerBase Features for an explanation of
- the features of MDS PowerBase.
-
- INSTALLING FROM DISKETTES
- -------------------------
-
- 1) Place the MDS PowerBase Installation Diskette #1 into the
- disk drive.
-
- 2) From within Windows, run the SETUP.EXE program on
- the MDS PowerBase Installation Diskette #1.
-
- 3) Follow the setup instructions.
-
- 4) After the installation of disks 1 and 2 is complete, you will
- be notified to install the ODBC component of MDS PowerBase. This is
- done by following steps 1-3 above except using the
- MDS PowerBase Installation Diskette #3.
-
- You only need to install ODBC if it is not already installed on your PC
-
- 5) Review the file named SETUP.LOG in the directory you
- installed MDS PowerBase into.
-
-
- ODBC Drivers
- ------------
-
- MDS PowerBase is delivered with two ODBC drivers. They are for accessing
- Oracle and SQL Server Databases. If you are currently using one of
- these two databases you will be able to use MDS PowerBase immediately
- after installing it. If you are using a different database, you will need
- to purchase the ODBC driver for that database if you do not already have it.
- You may already have various ODBC drivers if for example, you are using
- Microsoft Access to access databases. This is because Microsoft Access
- uses ODBC to access data from databases.
-
- If you need to purchase an ODBC driver, most likely the vendor who developed
- the database you are using will sell the ODBC driver for that database.
- After installing MDS PowerBase, a text file named ODBCDRV.TXT will be copied
- to the directory you install MDS PowerBase into. This text file lists
- various vendors of ODBC drivers, what database the drivers access, and
- who to call to get more information about the driver.
-
- Note: If you are using the Oracle 7.0 database, you must obtain the ODBC
- driver for use with Oracle 7.0. The driver delivered with MDS
- PowerBase does not work with Oracle 7.0. The Oracle 7.0 driver can
- obtained from Oracle Corp. It is also available on CompuServe.
-
- The SQL Server driver SQLSRVR.DLL delivered with MDS PowerBase will
- work with Sybase System 10 servers, however the driver was
- not built for use with System 10. Therefore, some of the
- new features in System 10 may not work. For example, using the
- new NUMERIC and DECIMAL datatypes while CREATING TABLES
- causes an ODBC error to occur.
-
- When an ODBC System 10 driver is developed, these problems
- should be eliminated.
-
- **** Thank you for using MDS PowerBase ****
