  84.    GETTING STARTED
  85.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  86.    The information provided below is to help you start the program for 
  87.    your hardware configuration.  For more details about the operation of 
  88.    the program press the F1 (function) key once you have started the 
  89.    program.

  91.    The following files are absolutely essential to run AS-EASY-AS:
  92.  
  93.       ASEASY.EXE  ASEASY.MSG  ASEASY.MNU  ASEASY.FNT
  94.  
  95.    These files need to reside in the same sub-directory.  In addition to 
  96.    that, if the files ASEASY.HLP, ASEASY.PRT, and ASEASY.CFG are going to 
  97.    be used, they HAVE to reside in the same (ASEASY) directory as well.

  100.     AS-EASY-AS is started from DOS using the command:
  101.  
  102.     C:> ASEASY /Option1/Option2/Option3/.....     [ENTER]

  105.     Where Option can be one or more of the following:

  108.     /4       - Special case for loading WKS files created and last saved 
  109.                with Version 4.00 of AS-EASY-AS.
  110.     /P       - Use alternate menu file (ASEASY.MN2) which provides
  111.                 command compatibility with version 4.00 of AS-EASY-AS.
  112.     /ATT     - Enables ATT display graphics, video mode $48
  113.     /ATT2    - Enables ATT display graphics, video mode $40
  114.     /AUTO=File... - Specify the worksheet to be loaded
  115.                      when the program is started
  116.     /BK=x    - Set screen blank-out period to x seconds
  117.     /BM      - Bypass Mono Detection Scheme
  118.     /CFG=xxx - Specify the configuration file to use
  119.     /CTR     - Center column identifying letters
  120.     /DIR=Path..  -  Set the Path to the WKS files
  121.     /DW      - Color protected cells after /RL command is used

  132.     /NR      - No recalc Linking.  Forces Manual Recalc.
  133.     /NW      - Use Nth bin model rather than Nth+1 (default)
  134.     /Q       - Quick screen updating for CGA
  135.     /RA      - Round Absolute (e.g. 1.6 to 2., -1.6 to -2.)
  136.     /UK      - Set the currency to £ and @DATE to DD/MM/YY
  137.     /VM=nnn  - Use Virtual (disk) EMS model, nnn-Pages (4k each)
  138.     /VP=Path - Set Path for Virtual (disk) memory File 
  139.     /V1      - Force CGA Emulation (normally on VGA Monitor)
  140.     /XM=nnn  - Use only nnn pages of EMS (each page is 16K)

  143.      A> ASEASY /E/DIR=C:\Data [ENTER]
  144.      Starts AS-EASY-AS for an EGA type monitor, and instructs the 
  145.      program that the data files will be located on drive C, 
  146.      in subdirectory "Data".

  190.    To Install on Floppy or Hard Disk:  
  191.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  192.    Although the program will work if installed on 360k diskettes, we 
  193.    recommend that the program is installed either on a hard disk, or a 
  194.    high density floppy diskette, since this will permit the help file, 
  195.    the printer setup files, and other auxiliary files, to be available to 
  196.    the user.  
  197.  
  198.    *  If you Install and run AS-EASY-AS from a floppy disk, without      
  199.    *  Expanded memory (EMS), or if the /NE command line switch is        
  200.    *  used, and you remove the AS-EASY-AS program disk from  
  201.    *  the drive while the program is running, you will get an 
  202.    *  error message and will be instructed to re-insert the disk.
  203.    
  204.    If installing on 360k disks, you need to have at least two 360 
  205.    drives, e.g., A and B.  You cannot install the program on a 
  206.    computer with a single 360 K disk drive and no Hard Disk!  
  207.  
  208.   * Place the AS-EASY-AS original diskette in drive A: (or B:)
  209.  
  210.   * Make sure the current logged drive is A: (Type A:, or B:, and 
  211.     press ENTER, if it is not).
  212.   
  213.   * Type INSTALL and press [ENTER].  Then, follow the simple on-screen 
  214.     instructions to install your copy of the program on the desired disk(s) 
  215.     and/or subdirectory.
  216.  
  217.     Note: If you are installing on 360K floppy disks, you will 
  218.           need multiple blank formatted diskettes!

  221.    On-Disk Documentation
  222.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  223.    The installation process extracts a file called ASEASY.MAN.  This is a 
  224.    ready-to-print formatted, User's manual for the program.  
  225.  
  226.    Following the installation, make sure that the ASEASY.MAN file is 
  227.    indeed on your default directory.  Then, to print this manual: 
  228.  
  229.    (1)  Make sure that the your printer is ON  and there is enough 
  230.         paper in it (the manual is about 102 pages).
  231.  
  232.    (2)  From the DOS prompt, type
  233.  
  234.         COPY ASEASY.MAN PRN and press [ENTER]
  235.  
  236.         Note that if your printer is connected to a SERIAL port,
  237.         then you need to use the command  COPY ASEASY.MAN COM1, or
  238.         COPY ASEASY.MAN COM2 (depending on which serial port your 
  239.         printer is connected to).

  243.    Hint for Windows Users
  244.    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  245.    On some systems (in particular older 486 CPU systems), you might 
  246.    experience difficulties running AS-EASY-AS v5.5 in windowed mode, 
  247.    under MS Windows 3.1.  In order to avoid such difficulties, make sure 
  248.    you create a .PIF file to run the program (check your Windows manual 
  249.    for info on .PIF files).  When setting up the .PIF file, make sure the 
  250.    minimum conventional RAM requirement is set to at least 400K and, 
  251.    also, make sure that the EXCLUSIVE operation box has been selected. 
  252.  
  253.    If you are still having difficulties, you might need to turn the 80387 
  254.    off and use the program's 80387 emulation instead.  To do that, prior 
  255.    to running Windows, at the DOS prompt, type  'SET 87=N' (without the 
  256.    quotes) and press [ENTER].

  260. Modification in Release 5.50E
  261. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  262.  1. A modification was made to ensure that .PIC files containing legend 
  263.     information would import into major word processing programs 
  264.     (WordPerfect, MS-Word, etc.), without problems. 
  265.  
  266.  2. The @NPV function implementation was modified so that now, if the 
  267.     user inadvertently includes blank cells in the selected range, they 
  268.     are ignored in the calculations of the returned value. 
  269.  
  270.  3. A correction was made to the keyboard status indicators, so that they 
  271.     are not displayed when the {borderoff} macro is invoked.  The cell 
  272.     reference and the flash mode indicator are not displayed, as well, 
  273.     when the above macro is active. 
  274.  
  275.  4. The matrix inversion operation in AS-EASY-AS was amended to detect 
  276.     singular matrices when the coefficients of one equation are simple 
  277.     scalar offsets of the coefficients of another (by simply detecting 
  278.     and tagging a zero determinant in the calculation). 
  279.  
  280.  5. A modification was made to re-enable the {INSON} {INSOFF} macro 
  281.     commands. 
  282.  
  283.  6. A correction was made to the Print, preView function to treat the 
  284.     left margin settings correctly (earlier versions used to account for 
  285.     the left margin twice). 
  286.  
  287.  7. A modification was made to the exponential scale graphing of the 
  288.     program.  In earlier versions, the Y-axis would revert to displaying 
  289.     values with round-off errors (9.9E-12 instead of 1.0E-11), because 
  290.     the value of e = 2.3025850930 was being used rather than  e = 
  291.     2.3025850929945.

  293.  8. {INVALUE} and {INLABEL} macro syntax is now checked to see if matched 
  294.     double quotes have been used, and a message is displayed if they 
  295.     haven't. 
  296.  
  297.  9. A modification was made to the way the Range, Copy command treated 
  298.     source "virgin" cells.  A value of zero is now assumed for all such 
  299.     cells in the source range (target range is overwritten with zeros). 
  300.  
  301. 10. The indirect cell addressing function (@@) was modified so that it 
  302.     now may be used as an argument to the @LENGTH and the @CELL 
  303.     functions. 
  304.  
  305. 11. Two new functions were introduced in the program.  @Path returns the 
  306.     current path and @Filename returns the name of the worksheet 
  307.     currently loaded in AS-EASY-AS. 
  308.  
  309. 12. A modification was made to the {RMDIR} macro so that it now operates 
  310.     as expected. 
  311.  
  312. 13. The Bar graph option was modified so that it now consistently 
  313.     displays the bars, regardless of whether the upper and lower limits 
  314.     are set automatically or manually. 
  315.  
  316. 14. A correction was made so that cells formatted with the Box format 
  317.     option are not filtered out when the /File, Option  command is used. 
  318.  
  319. 15. In earlier versions of the program, trying to print combined text and 
  320.     graphics with a "none" pitch option would produce corrupted output.  
  321.     A warning message is now issued when the user attempts that! 
  322.  
  323. 16. A correction was made to the program to now support Windows and 
  324.     Borders, a capability that was there with Ver. 5.01 and earlier 
  325.     versions. 
  326.  
  327. 17. After a lot of thought (and user prompting), the DATE functions in 
  328.     the program were modified to use a 200 span method (similar to some 
  329.     other spreadsheet programs in the industry), eliminating the wrap 
  330.     around present in earlier versions.  Here are some examples under the 
  331.     new model:
