  5. WHAT IS IT?:
  6. ERS32 is a 32-bit program for Windows 95 only.  It will help you to
  7. gracefully recover from a crash by allowing you to easily create three
  8. backups of all of your essential Windows 95 system files, and
  9. then reinstall those uncorrupted files when they're desperately needed
  10. following a system failure.
  11. With Ver1.5 an additional backup can be made using a scheduler such as
  12. Microsoft System Agent found in Microsoft Plus.

  14. ERS32 is a "user friendly" utility that doesn't require a great deal of
  15. practice or effort to utilize, but I would suggest that you print out
  16. this file and keep it handy for when you need it.

  62. DESCRIPTION:
  63. By using ERS32, Win95 system files are backed-up and 
  64. you are able to restore them (including the Windows Registry).
  65. ERS32 has proven to be an excellent and reliable
  66. backup and restore program.
  67.  
  68. The program was implemented when it was found that Win95 backup program ERU,
  69. CFGBCK, and when says it will restore from backup were less than 100% reliable.
  70. The ERS Backups done from the Windows environment, but restore must to be done
  71. from the  Command prompt Only(so called DOS outside Windows)
  72. (which is generally all that one can manage to get to when a really serious
  73.  crash has occurred). 
  74. The files that are backed-up are:

  76. System.dat
  77. System.da0
  78. User.dat
  79. User.da0
  80. System.ini
  81. Win.ini
  82. Command.com
  83. MSDOS.sys
  84. IO.sys
  85. Protocol.ini
  86. Plus all the User.dat and User.da0 files found if you are using profiles.

  88. The original ERS program proved to be an excellent backup and restore
  89. utility, and now it's here in a 32 bit version.

  92. INSTALLATION:
  93.  
  94. Extract ers32.zip and select install or better extract to a temporary folder
  95. and double click setup.exe.
  96.  
  97. Note: If you're running out of room on your "C" drive, you can select to
  98. install ERS32 to any other hard drive you may have in your system.
  99.  
  100. Also if you have a Computer like NEC PC9821 which the boot drive is A,
  101. ERS32 will install in that directory.
  102.  
  103. Uninstall older versions of ERS32 and install Ver1.5, if you get error
  104. installing then delete the old ERS32 folder in Windows Explorer and delete
  105. ERS1.bat, ERS2.bat and ERS3.bat in the root directory C. (if C is the boot drive)
  106.  
  107. BACKING UP:
  108. ERS can be found within the "Start Menu" listings under "Programs" or you
  109. can create a shortcut for your desktop in the usual way. 
  110.  
  111. Type in your boot drive if other than C (default is C) 
  112.  
  113. Click on one of the "SLOTS" push buttons to backup
  114. in the slot of your choice and update daily, make backups
  115. at different days.
  116. Slot 1 is ERS1 , Slot 2 is ERS2, Slot 3 is ERS3.  Slots are simply
  117. different locations on your hard drive where the three independent backups 
  118. will be stored, but keep in mind that each backup can take several megabytes 
  119. of disk space.

  121. I myself keep more than one backup at all times, and I always keep it
  122. up-to-date.  Remember, when you do a RESTORE, it will restore to the same
  123. settings that you had when you did that last backup, so if you didn't
  124. backup after making successful changes to your system, those changes will
  125. not be recovered.  Only those changes made before the most recent backup
  126. are recoverable.

  129. RESTORING AFTER A CRASH:
  130. With ERS32, you'll have up to three backups from which to do your
  131. RESTORE, four if you use auto backup.  
  132. Restart your computer, push F8 on the keyboard when the screen says
  133. "Starting Windows 95", and select the option "Command Prompt Only" from
  134. the menu.
  135.  
  136. To restore just type at the command prompt, ERS1 or ERS2 or ERS3,
  137. depending  upon which backup you want to initiate the restoration from.
  138. type ersauto if restoring from the automated backup.
  139. Click ctrl+alt+del to restart computer.
  140.  
  141. After restoration, Windows 95 should operate once again.

  144. AUTONOTICE:
  145. Autonotice is an additional feature of ERS32.  It gives you an *automatic
  146. reminder to make a backup every day on startup.  If you have already made
  147. a backup on that day nothing will happen.  To make use of "Autonotice",
  148. you will have to create a shortcut for the program file ERSpopup.exe  in
  149. the "Startup" folder of your "Start Menu".  Autonotice will then be
  150. enabled the next time you start Windows 95.

  152. *Note: Autonotice will not respond if all slots are empty
  153.  
  154. AUTOMATED BACKUP:
  155. In addition to auto notice , ERS32 V1.5 has new option
  156. where you can schedule ERS32 to do one backup using System
  157. agent or any other scheduler, ERSauto.exe in the ERS32 folder
  158. is to be used to run a scheduled backup, its suggested not
  159. to use ERSauto.exe shortcut in the  Startup folder.

  163. To Uninstall ERS32:
  164.  
  165. Go to Control Panel\ADD remove programs, hi-light ERS32 from the list
  166. and click Uninstall.
  167.  
  168. TROUBLESHOOTING:
  169.  
  170.  
  171. Please do a couple of practice runs, that is, backup and then restore to
  172. check that every thing is working okay.  I would also suggest that you
  173. print-out this readme text and keep it handy, just in case you forget
  174. how to operate the program later on, or more importantly, how to do a
  175. RESTORE.
  176. ╖    The program has been tested and proven to work very well.  Always read
  177.     the screen while it is doing the restore.  If you get the error message:
  178.     "Bad command or File name" while restoring , then manually copy the file 
  179.     attrib.exe from the Windows Command directory to the C: directory.
  180.  
  181. ╖    Copy command.com from C:\windows to C: if error: file not found while 
  182.     doing a backup.
  183.  
  184. ╖    If you get Error message "ERS32 was unable to find some systems files"
  185.     Check in c:\Windows\Profiles, see if there is a folder in there that has no 
  186.     User.dat or User.da0 in them.
  187.     If this is the case, delete this profile name, then go to:
  188.     Control Panel\Password click the Users Profiles tab and select 
  189.     "All users of this PC use same Preferences and Desktop Setting".
  190. .
  191.     Note: Many computers have Profiles added as an option and users don't know
  192.         that they exist, be very careful in configuring and deleting profiles.
  193.     If you decided to delete Profiles you will have to copy missing shortcuts 
  194.     from Profiles to the main StartMenu and Desktop configured without profiles.

  197. REMEMBER FOUR THINGS
  198.  
  199. 1)Print this readme.txt and save it for a rainy day or at least
  200. print the backup and restore section.
  201. 2)Always do one good fresh backups, don't say I don't need these
  202. backups because one day you will wish that you had a backup.
  203. 3)Always keep more than one backup and get familiarized with
  204. this program.
  205. 4)When you do a RESTORE, it will restore to the same
  206. settings that you had when you did that last backup,
  207.
