- `MA Main Functions - LANtastic (R) NET Connection Manager
- |Connect to Other Computers' Drives
- This option allows you to set up a new drive connection or remove an
- existing connection. When you've set up the connections you need, you'll
- be able to use these drives as easily as you use the drives on your own
- computer. For example, you'll be able to view edit or print files stored
- on those drives as if those files were stored on your computer.
-
- ~01 |Connect to Other Computers' Printers
- This option allows you to set up a new printer connection or remove an
- existing connection. When you've set up the connections you need, you'll
- be able to send your print jobs to these printers in the same way you'd
- send them to a printer attached directly to your own computer.
-
- You can send print jobs to any printer that has been set up to be shared.
- However, don't forget to check that your word processor or other
- application is set up to use the printer to which you want to send your
- print jobs.
-
- ~02 |Connect to Other Computers' Modems
- This option allows you to set up a new modem connection or remove an
- existing connection. When you've set up the connections you need, you'll
- be able to use these modems in the same way you'd use them if they were
- attached directly to your own computer.
-
- ~03 |Permanent Connections Management
- This option allows you to set up and remove printer and drive connections,
- make your current connections permanent and enable or disable the display
- of the Permanent Connections Management screen each time you reboot your
- computer.
-
- ~04 |View Print Jobs
- This option allows you to view the status of any print jobs that you've
- sent to printers on your network. If you want, you can also check the
- status of print jobs sent by other people.
-
- When you or anyone else send a print job to a printer that's attached to
- another computer, the job is sent first to a temporary storage location
- on that computer. All the jobs are stored there in a queue of print jobs
- until they can be sent to the printer. Note that each job is automatically
- deleted from the queue when it has finished printing.
-
- If you have the Q privilege, you can control all jobs in the queue. For
- example, you can change the order in which jobs are printed, view
- detailed information about each job, remove a job from the queue, put a
- job on hold and give a job priority status so it's printed before other
- less important jobs.
-
- ~05 |Send and Receive Mail
- This option allows you to compose and send electronic mail messages and
- check any mail messages sent to you, using the E-mail program you
- selected when LANtastic was installed. Depending on the LANtastic
- product you're using, you may have installed either LANtastic Mail or
- Lotus' cc:Mail. Whether you're using LANtastic Mail or cc:Mail, you can
- compose and send messages, and read messages sent to you at a computer
- that's been set up as a post office.
-
- To check on your messages or to send a message in LANtastic Mail, you'll
- need to know the name of the post office computer to which you must
- connect. If your user account has the |M| (Super |M|ail) privilege, you can
- control any item in the mail queue.
-
- If you're using cc:Mail, refer to your cc:Mail documentation for
- additional information on sending and receiving mail messages.
-
- ~06 |Chat With Another User
- This option allows you to establish a real-time text dialog with another
- person on the network. If you have an Artisoft Sounding Board installed,
- you can also hold a real-time voice dialog with another person on the
- network.
-
- ~07 |Login or Logout
- This option allows you to log in and out of one or more servers at a
- time.
-
- You'll also use screens for logging in and out of servers when you want
- to make new drive and printer connections, connect to a network post
- office computer to use LANtastic Mail, or view print jobs in a queue on a
- particular server.
-
- ~08 |User Account Management
- This option allows you to change your password on a server, disable your
- account or check the access rights and privileges of your account.
-
- ~09 |Monitor & Manage Network Activity
- This option allows you to watch the activity of a select group of
- computers. You can also synchronize the clocks on a select list of
- servers.
-
- ~0A |Monitor & Manage Server Activity
- This option allows you to see who is logged in to a server and monitor
- work on that server. You can also view a remote server's screen, issue
- commands to be executed by the server and control server functions.
-
- For example, you can schedule the server to shut down after a specified
- delay or control who's allowed to use the server. If the server is set up
- for remote control, you can use your keyboard to type in commands you
- want carried out by the server just as if you were typing the commands
- directly on the server's keyboard.
-
- `MA Don't display on-line manuals for now...
- ~0B |Display On-line Manuals
- This option displays the on-line Bookshelf, which contains detailed
- information on using your LANtastic network. You can search for
- information about a word or phrase, and follow up with information
- on related topics by selecting the |hypertext links| (highlighted words)
- in the manual text. A table of contents and index are also provided, and
- you can print selected manual pages. Note that this option won't appear
- in the Main Function screen if you didn't install the on-line Bookshelf
- when you installed LANtastic.
-
- `ZD Color Schemes
- This screen allows you to specify the colors in which your LANtastic
- screens are displayed. The default color scheme is Classic. If you want
- to change to another color scheme, use the arrow keys to highlight the
- one you want to use, then press |Enter|.
-
- `DC Drive Connections to Other Computers
- This screen allows you to set up connections to drives on other computers
- and to cancel existing drive connections. When you've set up all the
- connections you need, you can use these drives as if they were drives on
- your own computer.
-
- Note that if you want to set up a connection to check LANtastic Mail
- messages or to send a mail message, you'll need to know the name of the
- post office computer you want to use.
-
- |Making a Drive Connection|
- Use the arrow keys to select a drive letter that's listed on the screen
- as |<<Available>>|. Press |Enter|. You then specify to which computer
- you want to connect and select the drive you want to use on that
- computer. When you've done this, the connection you've set up appears
- alongside the drive letter on the computer that you selected. Press |Esc|
- twice to exit to DOS or to the application you want to use to begin
- working. Then, as an example, if you specified the F: drive, you'd go to
- your F: drive and begin working just as if you were working on a drive on
- your computer.
-
- |Breaking an Existing Drive Connection|
- To remove an existing drive connection, use the arrow keys to select the
- connection, then press |Del|. Then press |Enter| to confirm that you want
- to delete the specified connection.
-
- `QQ Printer Connections to Other Computers
- This screen allows you to specify the printer port on your computer that
- you want to connect to a printer on another computer. You can also use
- this screen to remove existing printer connections.
-
- You'll have to specify this printer port from within your applications
- when you want to print files. When you've set up all the connections,
- you'll be able to use these printers just as if they were attached
- directly to your computer.
-
- |Making a Printer Connection|
- Use the arrow keys to select a printer port that's listed on the screen
- as |<<Available>>|. For example, you might choose the LPT1 printer port.
- Press |Enter|.
-
- You must then specify to which computer you want to connect and select
- the printer on that computer where you want to print your files. When
- you've done this, the connection you've set up appears alongside the
- printer port you selected on your computer. If as an example, you'd
- selected the LPT1 printer port, your print command would specify the LPT1
- port. Press |Esc| twice to exit to DOS or to the application you want to
- use to print your files.
-
- |Breaking an Existing Printer Connection|
- To cancel an existing printer connection, use the arrow keys to select
- the connection, then press |Del|.
-
- `AC User Account Management
- This screen allows you to use the following options to modify the account
- you used to log into this computer:
-
- ~00 |Show Account Status
- Displays the status of your account including the date your account
- expires, the date you last logged in, the maximum concurrent log-ins
- you're allowed and the times of day when you're allowed to log in.
-
- ~01 |Switch to New Username
- Effectively logs you into the computer under a new username. All your
- drive and printer connections remain in effect, but you take on all the
- restrictions and privileges of the new account.
-
- ~02 |Change Password
- When this option is selected you're prompted to enter your existing
- password. Then you're prompted to type in the new password you want to
- use. |Note| that you must remember the new password. Once you've entered
- a password, there's no way to find out what you typed.
-
- ~03 |Disable Account
- Use this option to prevent further log-ins to this account. |Note| that
- this account can be restored only by using the NET_MGR program.
-
- `LI Connect to Computer
- This screen allows you to specify the computer to which you want to
- connect. If the computer for which you're looking isn't listed, press the
- |Ins| key, type in the name of the computer to which you want to connect
- and press |Enter|.
-
- Computers to which you're already connected appear at the top of the list
- and have two backslashes ("\\") before the computer name. Computers to
- which you're not connected appear in parentheses.
-
- Only those servers with Send Server ID enabled will be on this list.
-
- An A# in the title block of the window and numbers appearing on the
- right side of the list indicate you have multiple adapters in your
- computer. You'll receive server IDs from each network to which you are
- connected. It's possible to have computers with the same name, but with
- different adapter numbers, appearing on the list.
-
- You can set up a default username and password by pressing |F2| and
- answering the questions. When defaults are present, they'll automatically
- be used for all subsequent log-ins, unless they're not valid for that
- server. When REDIR is first started, the default username is the same as
- your machine name with no password. To disable default log-ins, set the
- username to blank.
-
- You must log in to a server before you are able to use its shared drives
- and printers. To do this, you must have a valid username and password on
- the server.
-
- To log in, select a server from the list and press |Enter| or press the
- |Ins| key and enter the information requested. If you have a valid
- default username and password set, you're logged in using the defaults;
- otherwise, you're prompted for a valid username and password.
-
- After you've successfully logged in, you're asked if you want to set the
- clock in your computer to the server's clock. This is handy for those
- networks that don't have a clock with a battery backup, or if you want
- all workstations to synchronize their clocks.
-
- Logging out breaks all connections with a server. To log out, use the
- arrow keys to move the highlight bar to the appropriate server, then
- press the |Del| key.
-
- `SD Information About Drives That Are Available for Sharing
- You've already selected the drive on your computer that you want to use
- to set up a new drive connection. This screen shows you all the drives
- and directories that are set up to be shared on the computer to which you
- want to connect. Use the arrow keys to highlight the drive or directory
- to which you want to connect, then press |Enter|.
-
- This screen shows the following information:
- 1. The name of each shared drive or directory.
- 2. The access you have to each shared drive or directory. Each letter
- corresponds to an access control list (ACL) privilege.
- 3. A description of each shared drive or directory (if a description was
- entered when the drive or directory was set up for sharing).
- If you select the "." entry, the drive connection will be made to the
- server's current control directory. To use files on that server you can
- then use the DOS Change Directory command (CD) to move into subdirectories
- on the server as you would on your own computer.
-
- `SP Information About Printers or Other Devices Available for Sharing
- You've already selected the printer or other device on your computer that
- you want to use. This screen shows you all the printers or other devices
- that are set up to be shared on the computer to which you want to
- connect. Use the arrow keys to highlight the printer/device to which you
- want to connect, then press |Enter|.
-
- This screen shows the following information:
- 1. The name of each shared printer/device.
- 2. The access you have to each shared printer/device. Each letter
- corresponds to an access control list (ACL) privilege.
- 3. A description of each shared printer/device (if a description was
- entered when the printer/device was set up for sharing).
-
- When you copy a file to the server's @DEVICE it's automatically placed in
- the queue and then sent to the printer. For example,
- COPY PFILE \\MAIN-AT\@PRINTER
- COPY PFILE LPT1
- If LPT1 had been redirected to \\MAIN-AT\@PRINTER, both of the commands
- above would perform the same function. The commands would send the file
- called PFILE to the remote printer on the server named MAIN-AT.
-
- `SX Information About Drives That Are Available for Sharing
- You've already selected the drive on your computer that you want to use
- to set up a new drive connection. This screen shows you all the drives
- and directories that are set up to be shared on the computer to which you
- want to connect. Use the arrow keys to highlight the drive or directory
- to which you want to connect, then press |Enter|.
-
- This screen shows the following information:
- 1. The name of each shared drive or directory.
- 2. A description of each shared drive or directory (if a description was
- entered when the drive or directory was set up for sharing).
- Access control information isn't available on this server's drives.
-
- `SZ Information About Printers or Other Devices Available for Sharing
- You've already selected the printer on your computer that you want to
- use. This screen shows you all the printers that are set up to be shared
- on the computer to which you want to connect. Use the arrow keys to

- entered when the printer/device was set up for sharing).
- Access control information isn't available on this server's printers.
-
- `QM Print Jobs Management Screen
- This screen allows you to view print jobs that have been sent to be
- printed by a printer attached to this computer.
-
- If you're using a LANtastic server and have the Q (Super Queue) privilege,
- or you're using another type of server, you can use the |F3| key to go
- to the Print Job View Options screen and specify whether you want to view
- only your print jobs or all print jobs sent to this computer. You can also
- specify the type of information you want displayed.
-
- When you send print jobs to a network printer, LANtastic prints each job,
- one at a time, until the queue of pending jobs is empty or it has been
- paused or halted by a network manager. To control a queue entry, use the
- arrow keys to select the item and press |Enter|.
-
- The status of each print job in the queue will be one of the following:
-
- PRINTING This job is currently being printed.
- IMMEDIATE The printer has been set for immediate printing and has
- begun to print the job even though not all the data has been
- sent to the print job queue. |IMMEDIATE| isn't available
- for jobs on non-LANtastic computers.
- WAITING This job is waiting to be printed. Print jobs remain in the
- queue until the printer is available.
- HELD This job has been put on hold and won't be printed until it's
- released.
- DELETING This job is being deleted. A job is marked as deleted only if
- it was deleted while in the process of being printed. It
- will remain in deleted status until a |*CANCELED*| message is
- printed.
- *RUSH* This job has been given priority status by a user with the Q
- privilege. It will be printed before other less important
- jobs. |*RUSH*| isn't available for jobs on non-LANtastic
- computers.
-
- You can change the status of a print job by using the arrow keys to
- select the job. Then press |Enter|. You'll see a list of options for
- changing the status of the queue entry.
-
- To control specific printers (LPT1, COM1, etc.), use the |F7| key to view
- the Device Status screen. This option isn't available when connected to
- a computer that isn't running LANtastic.
-
- If you have the Q privilege and want to control which printer devices are
- active, use the |F8| key to go to the Logical Streams screen. This option
- isn't available when connected to a computer that isn't running LANtastic.
-
- `QD Detailed Print Job Information
- This screen gives detailed information about the print job you selected:
-
- |Sequence Number| - A unique number for each print job. Jobs with the
- lowest sequence number are printed first.
- |Comment| - Comment attached by the person that created the job.
- |Sent by| - Identifies the person who created the job.
- |Machine| - Identifies the computer the person was using when the
- job was created.
- |Destination| - The printer where the job is to be printed.
- |Spooled Time| - Date/time when the job was created.
- |Despool Time| - Date/time when the job will begin printing. If no time
- was specified, N/A appears in this field.
- |Size| - The size of the print job (in bytes).
- |Copies| - The number of copies of the job that will be printed.
- |Status| - The current status of the job, specifically:
- PRINTING The job is currently being printed.
- IMMEDIATE The job is currently printing and spooling.
- WAITING The job is waiting to be printed.
- HELD The job has been held and can't be printed.
- DELETING The job is in the process of being deleted.
- *RUSH* This job is a priority job and will be printed next.
- |Delete?| - Whether or not the job will be deleted after
- being printed.
-
-
- `LS Logical Streams Information
- This screen shows the list of logical streams that you've set up.
- Logical streams are a way of controlling which @devices the server is
- allowed to despool. You can set up a logical stream to control an
- individual printer or device. Or you can use wildcard characters--
- asterisks ("*") and question marks ("?")--to set up a logical stream
- to control a group of printers or devices.
-
- Before a job is despooled, the server scans the list of streams to check
- whether the stream controlling the intended printer or other device is
- enabled or disabled. It scans the list starting with entry 0. If the
- stream is enabled, the server despools the job. If the stream is disabled,
- the server won't despool the job. Instead, the server will repeat this
- process for the next job in the queue.
-
- For example, if the logical stream list is
-
- 0: @NORMAL?.??? Enabled
- 1: @LABELS?.??? Disabled
-
- all jobs sent to @NORMAL?.??? (such as @NORMAL1, @NORMAL2, and so on) would
- be despooled. All jobs sent to @LABELS?.??? would not be despooled.
-
- You could use streams to simplify changing printer paper. For example, if
- @NORMAL?.??? jobs use 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper and @LABELS?.??? jobs use
- label paper, you would disable the @NORMAL?.??? stream using the |F5|
- key, switch the paper, then enable the @LABELS?.??? stream.
-
- |Note| that enabling and disabling a stream has no effect on the job
- currently being despooled. Before you disable a stream, make sure that all
- current jobs are finished.
-
- `DS Status of Printers and Other Devices
- This screen allows you to control printers and other devices. Use the
- arrow keys to select the printer or other device you want to control and
- press |Enter|.
-
- Each printer/device will be in one of the following states:
-
- DISABLED The printer/device is disabled.
- MULTIPLE JOBS Set up to despool more than one job.
- HALT AT EOJ Set up to despool one job and then stop (EOJ=End of Job).
- PAUSED The printer/device has been paused.
-
- |Note| that the CPS column displays the rate of printing in characters per
- second. If the CPS rate is 0, the printer isn't accepting any characters
- or is off-line. If the text (NOT DESPOOLING) is displayed, no jobs are
- available.
-
- `IQ Creating a Print Job:
- ~00 |Using the LANtastic Editor
- Select this option if you want to use the text editor that's included

- determine the contents of a print job. Note that you can't view a print
- job once it has begun printing.
- ~05 |Copy
- Copies a print job into a file. This option copies to files in binary mode
- and to printers in ASCII mode. If you want to print your job in binary
- mode, use the |Print| option. Note that you can't copy a print job once it
- has begun printing.
- ~06 |Print
- Prints a print job in binary mode. If you want to print your job in ASCII
- mode, use the |Copy| option. Note that you can't use this option once the
- selected print job has begun printing.

- currently being printed, it can't be Held.
- ~03 |Release
- Releases a held print job for printing. If the selected job isn't
- held it can't be released.
-
- `ML Mail Services
- LANtastic stores the mail in an area of the server's disk. The sender
- or the recipient can delete the mail item at any time.
-
- If you have M privilege, you'll see all the mail stored in the mail
- queue, otherwise you'll see only the items you have sent or received.
-
- `VW Selecting Voice or Text Mail

- and returns you to the previous screen.
- |F2| Allows you to toggle between uncompressed and compressed voice
- data storage. You can only enable compression at the beginning of
- a recording, since it applies to the whole message. Uncompressed
- voice data is stored at 8000 bytes per second. Compressed voice
- data is stored at 4000 bytes per second with a slight reduction in
- sound quality.
- `VR Playing a Voice Mail Message
- This screen allows you to listen to voice messages if you have an
- Artisoft Sounding Board. The display shows the length of the message
- in minutes and seconds and the size of the message in bytes. It also

-
- `CH Using Chat
- LANtastic's chat feature allows two network users to communicate with
- each other by typing messages. If both users have an Artisoft Sounding
- Board set to full-duplex mode in their computers, they can also chat
- using their Sounding Board handsets.
-
- You can use the top screen to type in your message. The lower screen will
- show the reply typed in by the person with whom you're chatting. The word
- |<<Unconnected>>| appears on the lower screen until someone answers your
- call or someone calls you. When a connection is made, a message appears
- showing the name of the computer with which you're chatting.
-
- You can use the following function keys as you chat on the network:
-
- |F2| When you're connected to another computer, this key toggles
- between voice chat enabled and voice chat disabled. When voice chat
- is enabled, you can communicate directly with the other person
- using your Sounding Board handset. Note that there's a one-second
- delay between the time you speak and the time when your voice is
- heard at the other computer.
-
- |F3| When voice chat is enabled this key allows you to specify a
- voice-activated threshold value. This value specifies how loudly
- you must speak before voice data is transferred.
-
- |Ins| Press this key to establish a chat session with another person.
- An audible tone and a pop-up message informs the other person that
- you want to chat.
-
- |Del| Hangs up the current chat session, but does not exit the chat
- program. This allows you to call someone else.
-
- |Esc| Hangs up the current chat session, if there is one, and returns
- you to the LANtastic NET Main Functions screen.
-
- |Home| Clears the top chat screen on your computer and the lower chat
- screen on the computer with which you're chatting.
-
- || Backs up and clears one character on the current line. An
- identical action will be performed on the computer with which
- you're chatting.
-
- `CD Enter the Name of the Computer You Want to Call
- Enter the network name of the computer you want to call. This is the name
- that was given to the computer when the REDIR program was run. Press the
- |Esc| key to cancel the call.
-
- `VT Specifying a Voice Chat Threshold
- This screen allows you to specify how loudly you must speak in order
- for voice data to be transmitted. Setting the threshold to zero (0)
- will transmit all sounds. Setting the threshold to 127 will transmit only
- the loudest sounds. The default setting (32) should be suitable for most
- applications.
-
- |Note| that the voice chat feature sends a considerable amount of data
- through the network. You should choose a threshold that allows your speech
- to be transmitted, but not any background noise. This reduces the amount of
- data that has to be handled by the network and minimizes the effect of
- chatting on overall network speed.

- `*SYNTAX
- The correct syntax for running NET is:
-
- NET[/switches] command arguments...
-
- where "switches" refers to any command line switches. "Command" refers
- to any of the NET commands. "Arguments..." refers to any optional
- parameters for the NET command. For example,
-
- NET/MONO
- NET SHOW
- NET USE S: \\SERVER1\C-DRIVE
-
- You can also use commas as delimiters if you want omit one or more
- arguments. For example, if you want to omit the comment argument in
- a NET PRINT command but want to specify the number of copies, you can
- separate the arguments with commas. For example,
-
- NET PRINT FILE.TXT LPT1,,10
-
- Without the two commas, the NET program would assume that "10" is the
- comment for the print job. For more information on the NET PRINT
- command, type NET HELP PRINT or NET ? PRINT.
-
- Type NET HELP or NET ? for a complete list of the NET switches and
- commands.
