  31. components can be recognized or configured properly in the

  48. * 1.  SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS                                                  *

  50. This section describes the system requirements for the Windows 95
  51. INF Update Utility for Intel Chipsets program:
  52.  
  53. NOTE:  This utility is designed for and tested with Windows 95
  54.        only.
  55.  
  56. 1.  The system must contain a supported Intel processor and chipset
  57.     configuration:
  58.  
  59.         Chipset:  Intel 430FX, 430HX, 430TX, 430VX, 440FX, 440LX, 440EX,
  60.                   440BX and 440GX.
  61.         Processor: Intel(r) Pentium(r) processor, Pentium(r) processor with
  62.                    MMX(TM) Technology, Pentium(r) Pro processor, 
  63.                    Pentium(r) II processor, Celeron(tm) processor,
  64.                    and Pentium(r) II Xeon(tm) processor devices ONLY.

  66. 2.  Ensure that a mouse is connected to the system.
  67.  
  68. 3.  One of the following versions of Windows 95  must be
  69.     installed on the system prior to running utility program.
  70.     Windows 95 4.00.950   (Retail)
  71.     Windows 95 4.00.950b  (OSR2 without USB Supplement)
  72.     Windows 95 4.00.950b  (OSR2.1 with USB Supplement)
  73.     Windows 95 4.00.950c  (OSR2.5 with or without USB Supplement)

  75. 4.  This utility should only be used on desktop systems.  The
  76.     utility must not be executed on notebook or portable systems
  77.     with or without dock.

  79. 5.  It is assumed that all devices in system are enabled.  This
  80.     utility may not work properly if there are devices in the
  81.     system which are disabled.

  113. The Windows 95 INF Update Utility for Intel Chipsets program
  114. will update the INF files depending on which release of Windows 95
  115. is used and which Intel chipset is present in the system.  The following
  116. table lists the INF files affected by the INF Update Installer:
  117.

  129. Note:  USB.INF is only updated if Windows 95 4.00.950b or
  130.        4.00.950c with USB Supplement is installed.

  132. Please check with your system provider to determine which OS
  133. release and which Intel chipset are used in your
  134. system.

  138. * 4.  RUNNING THE SOFTWARE                                                 *
  139. ****************************************************************************
  140. This procedure is specific only to the version of the software
  141. included in this package.
  142.  
  143. This subsection describes how to run the software on a system
  144. where Windows 95 is installed.
  145.  
  146. 1.  Check the System Requirements.  Windows 95 must be fully
  147.     installed and running on the system prior to running this
  148.     software.
  149.  
  150. 2.  Close any running applications.  You may experience some
  151.     difficulties if you don't do this.
  152.  
  153. 3.  Run SETUP.EXE.
  154.  
  155. 4.  Click Next on Welcome Screen to read and agree to the license agreement.
  156.     
  157. 5.  Click Yes if you agree to continue.  Note:  If you click No,
  158.     program will terminate.
  159.  
  160. 6.  Click Next on Installer screen.
  161.  
  162. 7.  Click OK to restart.
  163.  
  164. 8.  Follow the screen instructions and use default settings to
  165.     complete the setup when Windows 95 is re-started.

  169. * 5.  VERIFYING INF UPDATE BY THE SOFTWARE                                 *
  170. ****************************************************************************
  171. Run Device Manager to verify that INF files have been updated
  172. properly:
  173.  
  174. 1.  Click on Start
  175. 2.  Select Settings
  176. 3.  Select Control Panel
  177. 4.  Double click on System icon
  178. 5.  Click on Device Manager tab
  179. 6.  Click on View devices by type button
  180. 7.  Click on System Devices 
  181. 8.  Check the descriptions for one of the following entries:
  182.         Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to ISA bridge
  183.         Intel 82371SB PCI to ISA bridge
  184.     If you see PCI standard ISA bridge you will need restart your
  185.     system and re-run the software.

  188. * 6.  TROUBLESHOOTING                                                      *
  189. ****************************************************************************
  190. It is assumed that the system requirements from subsection #1
  191. above have been satisfied.

  193. COMMON PROBLEMS or Questions:

  196. #1 > 1a.  How do I know the INF files in my system require update?
  197.      1b.  My system works just fine without running this utility
  198.           program.  Do I still need to update my INF files?
  199.      1c.  What will happen if I do not update my INF files?
  200.  
  201. ANS> This software utility checks whether your system contains an
  202.      Intel chipset and Windows 95 operating system before
  203.      performing any updates.  If your system needs
  204.      the update, it will be performed.  If your system doesn't
  205.      need the update, the program will inform you and terminate.
  206.  
  207.  
  208. #2 > System locked up during Device Manager Remove or during
  209.      restart.
  210.  
  211. ANS> System lockup can occur during Device Manager Remove
  212.      operation or Control Panel Restart as a result of
  213.      possible system issues during these operations.
  214.      In the event of system lockup, restart the machine
  215.      and view Device Manager.  If devices are listed
  216.      properly and system experiences no further problems,
  217.      then .INF file restore process was successful.
  218.      If devices are not configured correctly try re-running
  219.      the Windows 95 INF Update Utility for Intel Chipsets
  220.      program.  If this does not fix problem or further problems
  221.      are experienced, re-install Windows 95.
  222.  
  223. #3 > I want to restore my original INF files.
  224.  
  225. ANS> The Installer will update the INF files as
  226.      necessary.  Intel recommends that the updated INF files
  227.      be used with Intel chipsets to function properly
  228.      in the system.  However, the following procedures can be
  229.      used if one desires to restore the original INF files.
  230.  
  231.      The original INF files are backed up as MSHDC.xxx,
  232.      MACHINE.xxx, or USB.xxx where xxx is a 3 digit number
  233.      (for example, 000, 001, etc.).  This utility program
  234.      attempts to save the original INF files as *.000, but if
  235.      that file name is already in use the utility program will
  236.      keep incrementing the file extension until it finds one
  237.      that is not in use.
  238.  
  239.      For example, to restore the original "MSHDC.INF" file:
  240.  
  241.     1.  Make copy of new existing "MSHDC.INF" files.
  242.             C:> copy MSHDC.INF MSHDC.NEW
  243.     2.  Restore the original "MSHDC.INF" file.
  244.             C:> cd \<Windows 95 Path>\INF\
  245.             C:\<Windows 95 Path>\INF> copy MSHDC.000 MSHDC.INF
  246.     3.  Repeat step 1 - 2 for MACHINE.INF file or USB.INF file
  247.         as needed.
  248.     4.  Run the Control Panel->System applet.
  249.     5.  Click on Device Manager
  250.     6.  Click on View devices by connection.
  251.     7.  Click on Plug and Play BIOS.
  252.     8.  Click on PCI bus.
  253.     9.  Select Remove.
  254.     10. Select Yes to restart the system.
  255.     11. Windows 95 will display messages when various hardware
  256.         components in the system are recognized.  When prompted to
  257.         install a driver, select the Windows Default driver or
  258.         appropriate device drivers from disk provided by the hardware
  259.         manufacturer if needed.
  260.     12. Select Yes to restart the system.  (Steps 10-11 may occur
  261.         several times.)
  262.     13. Re-install the custom drivers from disk provided by the
  263.         hardware manufacturer if needed.

  266. #4 > I am using Windows 95 operating system Version 950A (OSR1) and
  267.      my IDE controller is preceeded with a yellow "!" in Device Manager
  268.      after I run this software utility.
  269.  
  270. ANS> If you are using Windows 95 operating system Version 950A (OSR1), 
  271.      with the Windows default IDE driver, this can happen.  For this reason,
  272.      OSR1 is not supported with the Windows 95 INF Update Utility
  273.      for Intel Chipsets program.
