PRODUCT OVERVIEW
PowerSync 1.11 by Linkpro Inc., is an file synchronization and transfer program that allows you to update files between your Laptop and desktop PCs.
PowerSync is a user-friendly, Windows utility that automatically updates files between portable and desktop PCs, making it ideal for road warriors. PowerSync identifies new and revised files, and synchronizes data on desktop and portable PCs. PowerSync only needs to be installed on one computer and is a flexible program with powerful features. However, the makers of PowerSync realize not all users will be proficient in computer programs. It contains features that provide the user with a simple and intuitive window where the automatic update operations can easily be managed.
Synchronization is the process in which you can select files on two separate PCs that you want to contain identical contents. If one file is more current than the other, PowerSync will copy the most current version of the file to the PC with the older version, and will replace the older version. If a file is on one PC but not the other, PowerSync will copy the missing file to the other PC. At the completion of Synchronization, your selections on both PCs will be a mirror image.
MINIMUM SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS:
The server or workstation running PowerSync 1.11 must have the following:
╖ 80386 or greater IBM compatible computer
╖ 4MB of RAM
╖ 1MB available hard disk space
╖ DOS 5.0 or higher
╖ Windows 3.1 or later running in enhanced mode
╖ Mouse or compatible pointing device
╖ One 3.5 inch, 1.44 MB floppy disk drive
INSTALLATION:
1. PowerSync only has to be loaded on one PC. We recommend your portable PC.
2. Copy the compressed file you download into a new "DISK1" directory on your hard drive.
3. Using PK-UNZIP, decompress the file in the "DISK1" directory.
4. Load Windows.
5. Go to the Windows Program Manager and select Run from the File menu.
6. Run the "SETUP.EXE" program in the "DISK1" directory by typing selecting RUN from the FILE menu in the Program Manager, and typing "C:\DISK1\SETUP" and pressing the return key.
7. Follow the instructions provided in the setup program.
8. When the program asks you for your serial number, enter "77110.0000538".
OPERATION:
1. Make certain that the times and dates are the same on both PCs.
2. Load the Windows software and start PowerSync.
3. Connect the two PCs. See on-line help under "Establishing Connections".
4. Select two of the available drives you wish for synchronization.
5. Highlight the directories to be synchronized.
6. After you have selected a pair of directories you can do the following:
Synchronize - PowerSync will synchronize the selected directories, putting the most current version of the files on both systems. Missing files will be copied over, making the selected directories a mirror
image of each other.
Setup - Displays the directories you selected and allows you to control the synchronization process.
Analyze - Displays the files that are out of synchronization in the directories you selected. Provides you with information on the files and allows you to control the synchronization process.
Select Dir - Return to start over or select different directories.

Notes and Cautions
1. When changes are made to the file system with other applications, PowerSync does not
reflect the changes until you refresh the drive by re-selecting the drive in the drive list box.
It is recommended to refresh both sides.
2. All files to be synchronized must be closed prior to performing the synchronize. Files that are
opened or active may prevent the synchronization process from occuring and an error dialog
will appear.
3. PowerSync does not detect floppy diskettes that are write protected. If you encounter an
"Sync not complete" error during synchronization, check your floppy diskette to ensure it is
not write protected.
4. When you are synchronizing with PowerSync, and File Manager is opened at the same time,
your drives may be constantly accessed. This may happen even though those drives are
not selected. This is not caused by PowerSync. The File Manager may be polling for
file system changes. If you find this annoying, close the File Manager.
5. Restore Factory Settings only restores the factory settings for the current session. If you
want to make the changes permanently, you have to select Save Settings from the options
menu.
Auto Synchronization Tip
If you do not specify the full paths of the auto synchronization files, PowerSync will search for the auto synchronization files in the AUTOSYNC directory. This AUTOSYNC directory must be in your PowerSync directory.
Ini
In the Windows directory, there exists a file called PWRSYNC.INI. This file is used by PowerSync to determine what font it should display, what drives it should show when the application is first started, what the conflict directory is, etc. You should not have to modify any of these items directly. Virtually every single item can be modified from one of the menu items in PowerSync. This is done by making the changes you want and then choose Save Settings from the Options menu. The only item in the PWRSYNC.INI file that cannot be changed using the menus in PowerSync is the log directory. It is under the LOG section in the LOG DIR item. It is used by PowerSync to determine where it should place the default log file.
Selection/Highlighting
Remember, when you are clicking on an item to highlighted it, this selects it and all subdirectories and files within it. This tells PowerSync that when you click on its activity control button you want it to apply to all the subdirectories and files within it. If the item is not selected then any activity control button changes you make apply only to the item itself. Remember also that in the analysis screen when you select a directory the activity control buttons of all subdirectories will change to an X (ignore) this does not actually change anything, it is just PowerSync getting prepared for you to click on the activity control buttons.
Interlink/Interserve
When you are using Interlink/Interserve, you should use the following guideline. As a general rule of thumb, you will usually want to run the interlink client on the machine that has the least number of drives. This should be a machine that is not connected to a network.
There are several reasons why you should follow the above guideline. When you use interlink/interserve to connect your machine to another machine that is on a network, it can introduce some potential conflicts and remapping of your drives. Let's look at two specific examples in detail.
The first case occurs when you want to connect either your desktop or notebook (which is on a network) to another PC. Let's call the first machine (the machine that is on the network) your client machine. The client machine will run interlink. We will call the second machine (the machine you will want to connect to) the server machine. The server machine will run interserve. This scenario can potentially introduce new conflicts and/or remapping of the drives on the client machine. For instance, the client machine may currently have drive F as the LOGIN drive. If you run interlink, it could remap drive F to another drive that is on the serving machine (the machine that is running interserve). Thus your original LOGIN drive may no longer be available. To avoid this situation, you may want to reverse the role of the two machines. In most cases, you will want to run interlink on the machine that is not connected to a network.
The second case occurs when you have a CD-ROM on the machine that will run interlink. For example, you may currently have your CD-ROM mapped to drive E. If you install interlink on this machine, interlink may take over drive E. When your CD-ROM is mounted at a later time, the CD-ROM driver may find that drive E is no longer available. Consequently, the CD-ROM driver may attempt to find another available drive. If the CD-ROM driver successfully finds another drive, you will have to figure out what the new drive letter is. To avoid the scenario, you also want to reverse the role of the two machines. In most cases, you will want to run interlink on the machine that does not have a CD-ROM.
