- GREEK PLANETS: 9th century BC
-
- In the 9th century BC, the Greeks learn to
- differentiate between the stars and planets and gave
- the planets names. Mercury was the twinkling star,
- Venus was the herald of the dawn since it appeared in
- the early morning hours, Mars was the fiery star,
- Jupiter was the luminous star, and Saturn was the
- brilliant star. The Greeks thought that there was a
- sixth planet which appeared in the evening (they
- called it Vespertine). They didn't realize that Venus
- appeared sometimes in the evenings.
