- Help file for Mode Definer
- --------------------------
-
- Overview
- --------
-
- This utility provides an easy way to define your own modes, and build
- in fine adjustments to suit your particular monitor. New mode
- definitions can be saved as modules or just created and used for one
- session.

- Instructions
- ------------
-
- The application installs itself on the right hand side of the icon
- bar after loading. Click on the icon to open up the mode
- specification window. The process for defining a new mode is as
- follows:
-
- * Choose the number of colours you wish your new mode to have by
- switching the appropriate radio icon on.
-
- * Select the width of the characters the new mode will have This
- can be either the width of those in an 80 column mode (like mode
- 12) or a 132 column mode (like mode 16).
-
- * Set the width and height. Note that although the width can be
- incremented in steps of 1, all modes must be an even number of
- columns wide. The width will therefore be rounded down if it is
- an odd number.
-
- * It will not usually be necessary to change the graphics scaling
- factors, which are X=1 and Y=2 by default. Adding 1 to either
- scaling factor halves the internal width/height of a pixel, but
- will not increase the resolution of the displayed picture.
-
- * Error correction is included for people using monitors which do
- not have horizontal/vertical centring controls. The arrows on
- either side of the X/Y adjustment headings indicate which way
- the picture is to be shifted. The values below these headings
- indicate how far the picture is to be shifted. The direction of
- shift is shown with a grey arrow on a black background.
-
- * Finally, set the mode number the new mode will have.
-
- All values can be altered by using the up and down arrows beside
- them, or by clicking on the icon and entering the value using the
- keyboard.
-
- To save or use the mode, click Menu on either the icon on the icon
- bar when the pointer is over the mode specification window. A menu
- containing four options will appear:
-
- * Info - self explanatory
-
- * Save - leads to the standard save dialogue box
-
- * Test mode - creates the mode and makes it the current desktop
- screen mode
-
- * Quit - self explanatory
-
- Use & Enjoy!
