  22. This file describes version 2.3 of Ghostscript.

  25. ******** An overview of Ghostscript ********

  28. Ghostscript is the name of a set of software that provides:
  29.  
  30.     - An interpreter for the Ghostscript language, which very
  31. closely resembles the PostScript (TM) language; and
  32.  
  33.     - A set of C procedures (the Ghostscript library) that
  34. implement the graphics capabilities that appear as primitive
  35. operations in the Ghostscript language.

  37. The Ghostscript language interpreter and library are written entirely
  38. in C, with some assembly-language accelerators for MS-DOS platforms.
  39. Currently, Ghostscript is known to run on the following platform
  40. families:

  42.     - IBM PC and compatibles with EGA, VGA, or compatible graphics
  43.       (256K frame buffer required) under MS-DOS 3.1 or 3.3;
  44.  
  45.     - A wide variety of Unix systems using X Windows version 11,
  46.       release 3 and 4, including Sun-3, Sun-4, Sun-386i,
  47.       Sun SPARCStation 1; generic 80386 machines running 386/ix;
  48.       H-P 9000/300 and 9000/800; DECStation 2100 and 3100; VAX
  49.       running Ultrix; Sequent Symmetry; Convex C1 and C2;
  50.  
  51.     - Sun workstations (Sun-3, SPARC, Sun-386i) running SunView;
  52.  
  53.     - VAX, VMS with X11R3, gcc and DEC C compiler (DEC C compiler
  54.       version 3.1 or later is required).

  56. It is very likely that Ghostscript will run under other versions of
  57. MS-DOS, and other versions of Unix that support X11, but it has not
  58. been tested in these environments.  Ghostscript does NOT run well on
  59. PC-compatibles with Hercules display cards: text and graphics output
  60. interfere with each other.

  124. The best times to call on the phone are 8:30-11:30 AM Monday-Friday;
  125. at other times you may get an answering machine.  Only use the
  126. Internet if your organization or activity allows this -- the UUCP
  127. path works just as well, but may take longer.

  129. If you report a problem, please specify which version of Ghostscript
  130. you are running, and the hardware, operating system, window system,
  131. and C compiler you are using, and be as specific as you can about the
  132. problem -- this will help us a lot in tracking it down.  We want
  133. Ghostscript to be a high-quality product, and will do our best to fix
  134. any reported problem.
