- For a long time now the Acorn has been seen (by enthusiasts at least) as a
- machine capable of producing high quality DTP documents, but as far as I can
- tell no one has seriously considered it for CAD. In this article I am going to look
- at the aged and probably unappreciated ProCAD from Minerva.

- The first thing that struck me about ProCAD was the distinctly odd windows
- that popped up when the program was first loaded in. These were unfortunately
- left unexplained until you started to draw something, and, more importantly
- are very obtrusive on the desktop and make moving windows around a real pain
- until you are used to them. Although clicking on them will remove them.
- The first time I used ProCAD I had difficulty find out how to draw something
- without having to go through the extensive menu although when you have used
- the program a few times you get used to the way it operates and everything
- becomes a lot easier.
- Getting used to ProCAD is simply a matter of extensively toying with the program
- until you have discovered all of the time saving devices hidden away.
- Clicking on the ProCAD icon loads up an empty page for you to work on. At the
- top of the page is a bar from where you can get access to all the tools and
- constraint tools more of which later.

- You draw lines just as you would in draw, there is no freehand
- tool but this is by no means a serious omission.
- Shapes include rectangles, circles and polygons. All of which
- can be draw in every conceivable way.
- ProCAD can draw two types of arc. Circular arcs and
- elliptical arcs. both of which can be draw almost every
- possible way.
- Text is entered onto a dialogue box and then transferred via
- a rectangle to the screen. This would be better if the text
- was written directly onto the page.
- Labelling every thing can be labelled, distances, angles,
- whatever you want. This is a very important and duly
- flexible tool.
- Filling is probably the most disappointing tool. This is for
- two reasons. First to actually apply a fill to a shape, a
- combination of keys must be pressed, which makes it hard
- to learn and second, the fill is separate from the object
- being filled. Having said this, the fill is very powerful, it can
- fill between two objects so if you select two objects, the fill
- will fill between the objects.

- Multi-copy is a powerful but probably not too useful tool. It
- allows you to copy an object many times to go in a line,
- around a circle or to follow a path
- Fillet is a tool to allow you to draw arcs between two lines to
- give them a rounded edge. This is a disappointing tool
- because the arcs it creates do not join to the shape and so
- the tool is almost useless! However, you can round of a
- shape properly by using the menu.
- Chamfer is very much like fillet except it does not make arcs
- but lines of an equal angle to each line. This tool is well
- implemented and the lines created become part of the
- shape.
- Tangent will draw a line between two circles where the line
- is a tangent to both circles.
- Perpendicular allows you to draw lines perpendicular to
- any shape.
- Parallel allows you to draw lines parallel to any shape.

- Constraint tools
- >STYLE Body
- ProCAD includes many constraint tools that allow accurate positioning according
- to some 'rules'. This means that if you move close to a line or a circle centre or
- whatever you have selected to be the rule, the pointer will change slightly and a
- noise will be made indicating this. Many type of constraint are included here are
- a few:
- Centre of circle/arc.
- On a line.
- At a 'point'.
- At a crossed line.
- There really are many more! Some of which are very specialised to certain jobs

- Interactive help
- >STYLE Body
- ProCAD DOES support interactive help which is very useful considering the
- complexity of the program. This makes the initial learing process much easier
- and faster, so you will be able to produce drawings soon after using it.

- Using ProCAD
- >STYLE Body
- When you get down and start actually making something with ProCAD, it is very
- easy to make the drawing with the least possible fuss. This is because the
- redraw rate is quite fast and the cross hairs on the cursor allow you to accurately
- position and draw with the cursor. Apart from the non-RiscOs approach of this
- software, it is extremely easy-to-use and surprisingly professional.
- The price is what will set most people thinking hard about if they really need it
- but if you do any kind of CAD more than every now and then, then it is well
- worth getting it.
