  1.                           Introduction
  2.  
  3. This program  allows you to connect your Psion Organiser II, via 
  4. the RS232 Comms Link package from Psion to any model in the Acorn 
  5. Archimedes computer range. (The A3000 will require the RS232
  6. serial port upgrade)
  7.  
  8. The  program allows you transfer files (Data and  Procedures)  to 
  9. and from your Psion and Archimedes.
  10.  
  11. This  provides a simple way to backup valuable data held on  your 
  12. Organiser to very safe a reliable storage medium.
  13.  
  14. While your data is held on disc you could safely change batteries 
  15. or  erase  a  data pack,  and then reload your  Psion  after  the 
  16. operation is completed.
  17.  
  18.    
  19. Now for some notes on how to use this program, it is very easy to 
  20. use, employing a simply menu system to use the various features.
  21.  
  22. This  manual  uses  the  following  convention,   if  a  word  is 
  23. surrounded  by  < >  it means press that particular  key  on  the 
  24. Archimedes keyboard.
  25.  
  26. Any  word  surrounded by { } means select that  function  on  the 
  27. Psion by pressing the EXE key on the Organiser keypad.
  28.  
  29. Pressing the <ESCAPE> key at any time will return you to the main 
  30. menu of the program.
  31.  
  32. Important Notes.
  33.  
  34. The only limitation to the package is that procedures written  on 
  35. the  Psion  are can only be transferred in  there  non-translated 
  36. form  (Source  code).
  37. This  means that you must transfer the procedure code before  you 
  38. delete the source code and just keep the object code.
  39. When  you come to reload the Organiser you must  {TRANSlate}  the 
  40. procedure to OPL before using it.
  41.  
  42. This  package  will  work  with a  Psion  Organiser  II  and  any 
  43. Archimedes computer, it does how ever require an adaptor cable to 
  44. join  the two units together.  See the section CABLE LAYOUT  else 
  45. ware for the correct type of cable needed.

  47.                   Psion To Archimedes Transfer
  48.  
  49. Option  1  allows  to  transfer files form  your  Psion  to  your 
  50. Archimedes computer.
  51.  
  52. After you have selected this option from the main menu,  you  are 
  53. asked to enter a file name for the data to be saved under on  the 
  54. disk. The default file name of $.!Psion.Data.MAIN will only be 
  55. used if you press <RETURN> at the prompt.
  56.  
  57. The  program will now pause to wait for data to arrive from  your 
  58. Psion  Organiser.   On  your  organiser  you  should  follow  the 
  59. following prompts :-
  60.  
  61.                     1.Select {COMMS}
  62.                     2.Select {TRANSMIT}
  63.                     3.Select {FILE} or {PROCEDURE}
  64.                     
  65.                     If you selected {FILE} :-
  66.  
  67.                     4.Type in the name of the file to be sent
  68.                       or use the default {MAIN}.
  69.  
  70.                     If you selected {PROCEDURE} :-
  71.  
  72.                     4.Type in the name of the program file to be 
  73.                       sent.
  74.  
  75.                     5.Press  'CLEAR'  on  the  Psion  keypad   to 
  76.                       return to the {COMMS} menu.
  77.  
  78. The file or procedure should now be sent to the  Archimedes.  The 
  79. data  will  automatically  be saved to the disk  under  the  name 
  80. entered earlier.

  82. When  the transfer has been completed you will be asked to  press 
  83. the <SPACE BAR> to return to the main menu.

  85.                   Archimedes To Psion Transfer 
  86.  
  87. Option  2  allows  you  to  transfer  files  to  your  Archimedes 
  88. computer to your Psion Organiser.
  89.  
  90. After you have selected this option from the main menu,  you will 
  91. be asked to supply a filename for the data to be transferred.
  92. The  program will now try to find this file on the current  disk. 
  93. If  the  file  could not be found or was of the  wrong  type  the 
  94. screen will display the appropriate error message.

  96. The  default filename of $.!Psion.Data.MAIN  will only be  used if 
  97. you press <RETURN> at the prompt.
  98.  
  99. Your  Psion  Organiser should be set up in the following  way  by 
  100. following the prompts :-
  101.  
  102.                     1.Select {COMMS}
  103.                     2.Select {RECEIVE}
  104.                     3.Select {FILE} or {PROCEDURE}
  105.  
  106.                     IF you selected {FILE} :-
  107.  
  108.                     4.Select {ERASE} or {APPEND}
  109.  
  110.                     If you selected {PROCEDURE} :-
  111.  
  112.                     4.Type in the filename for the procedure to 
  113.                       be saved under.
  114.  
  115.                     5.Press  'CLEAR'  to return  to  the  {COMMS} 
  116.                       menu.

  118. WARNING:  The Psion must be set up first before the file transfer 
  119. is  attempted  or  the file transfer  may  fail,  and  lock  both 
  120. machines up!
  121.  
  122. When  you have the Psion set up  ready to receive data press  the 
  123. <SPACE BAR> to transfer the file.
  124.   
  125. The Archimedes will inform you when the transfer is complete  and 
  126. ask you to press the <SPACE BAR> to return to the main menu.

  128.                            Print File
  129.  
  130. Option 3 allows you to print a previously saved file.
  131.  
  132. After you have selected this option you will be asked to  provide 
  133. a  filename  of  the  file to be  printed  out.  The  default  of 
  134. $.!Psion.Data.MAIN  will only be selected if you press <RETURN> at
  135. the prompt.

  137. The  screen will now ask you weather you want the data  displayed 
  138. on the screen or the printer.The default in this case is [S]  the 
  139. screen,  this  will  be  selected if you press  <RETURN>  at  the 
  140. prompt.

  142. The data from the selected file will now be printed on the screen 
  143. or the printer.
  144.  
  145. When  this operation has finished the screen will prompt  you  to 
  146. press the <SPACE BAR> to return to the main menu.

  148.                       Convert File To ASCII
  149.  
  150. Option 4 allows you to convert any file to ASCII, for loading into
  151. a word processor etc. A default name of $.!Psion.Data.MAIN is
  152. offered for the source of the data file.
  153.  
  154. An output name is generated in the program which is the source 
  155. name plus the word 'Text', just press <RETURN> to accept the new
  156. filename.

  158. The input file is now converted and the output stored as the file
  159. name you selected. (Default='$.!Psion.Text.nameText')
  160.  
  161. I'am sorry but this option was not thought of when I first wrote 
  162. this program, therefore it is PRACTICALLY impossible to write a
  163. reverse procedure (eg to convert ASCII to a Psion data file).
  164. (All to do with file formats, that sort of thing!)

  167.  
  168. These three options are all fairly self explanatory.
  169.  
  170. Option number five displays one page of help, describing the set 
  171. up options the Psion should be set to.
  172.  
  173. Option  number six allows you to do any star (*) command on  the
  174. Archimedes operating system, mounting of disks etc.
  175. Pressing <RETURN> on its own will exit this procedure.
  176.  
  177. Option seven will exit the program to BASIC/DESKTOP.
