- FPAOFF
- ======
-
- One short coming of the fpa chip is the inability to switch the fpa chip
- off. Running fpaoff will turn off the fpa chip and return back to the old
- FPEmulator (2.87 with RiscOS 3.1).
-
- The fpa can be turned back on by RMLOADing the FPE400 module supplied with
- the FPA chip (just double click on the module).
-
- Why turn off the FPA?
-
- One reason is to see the speed difference, important if you are designing
- software that uses the floating point emulator, so that you can see the
- speed if no fpa chip is present.
-
- Secondly there appears to be a bug in Acorn's PCEmulator versions 1.82 and
- earlier which appears to be incompatible with the FPA chip. After booting
- your machine, run fpaoff, then load the PCEm and start DOS. After this you
- can restart the FPE400 module, since PCem uses the FPA instruction set. This
- enables Fractint v17 and v18 to work correctly and also enables use of the
- FPA as a 80187 maths co-processor. I presume Acorn will fix this problem at
- some time.
